  1. Yeah, it works. It basically is just a bunch of copper which is toxic to invertebrates in small quantities and toxic to fish in large quantities.
  2. Saltwater puffers are saltwater. Brackish water puffers are brackish. Freshwater puffers are freshwater.
  3. I think Jaycar has light sensor switches. Just use that to trip a relay, maybe. Be less than buying a whole fitting just for the sensor, I'd imagine. Of course, you could also do what everyone else does, buy a cheap timer.
  4. Nope, why? All I'm really dosing at the moment is kalk and I've just started with a bit of magnesium.
  5. I have a snail problem too. They don't breed fast enough. Get a puffer, puffers love them.
  6. Since everyone's taking pics from the left side... Just took this one a minute ago. Pain in the but patch of algae on the left hand side, rock's too close to the front off the tank to get the algae magnet at it.

    Copepods

*Imagines a little voice yelling* What the...He was supposed to be home tomorrow! EVERYONE OUT QUICK, PARTY'S OVER!
  8. Ok, who wants to explain the birds and the bees to him?

    Reefs Reef Tank

Nice...Too bad it's infested with SPS.
  10. Hmmm, you can get similar LPH eheim and lagunas for the same price? Either you're getting the eheims for really cheap or being charged way too much for the lagunas. Most places as far as I've seen sell the Lagunas for about half the price of the eheims for similar flows.
  11. The advantages are minimal unless you have a DSB(Other than aesthetics and sand sifting animals) so I'd just get rid of it completely. Replace with heaps of liverock or something.
  12. Of course if you get a pro to do it instead of trying to find out how to do it then doing it yourself you'll never learn how to do it yourself. That said, I'd actually like to take an electrician type course...
  13. The lights I have iirc have the earth going into a block inside the light with the neutral and power wire and then another wire from the block goes to the case.

    pistol shrimp!

Most people spend a lot of time and energy getting those OUT of their tanks.
  15. Hmmm, I should probably start feeding my tang Nori. Got a pack of it...
  16. Earth wire goes to earth, neutral wire goes to neutral, power wire goes to power.
  17. I don't really have a place for a quarantine tank and then that's ANOTHER tank I have to maintain. At my current rate of adding fish maybe once every 9 months...

    My tank setup

Increasing backpressure will NOT increase your flow. Higher pressure would equal higher velocity, but if your pump is running practically at its limit as far as head you may get a slight increase in velocity out of the spray bar holes but you'll end up with a huge decrease in flow. Only way you're going to get more flow is bigger holes(=lower velocity out of the holes), a bigger pump or a second pump.

    sand

Depends who you ask. Some say: Because it's usually silica based and will cause algae. Others say: No, it won't cause algae Some say: It doesn't have enough surface area for bacteria and other sand bed creatures. Others say: It does too have enough surface area and sand bed critters live just fine in it. Some say: It's full of poisons and toxins and pollution because it comes from the ocean. Others say: Yeah, so does most everything we put in the tank and I don't see any 3 eyed tangs. Some say: It's ugly and unnatural. Others say: Most coral reefs don't even have much sand and it looks fine. Some say: Sand is a timebomb, go DSB. Others say: Go with whatever you like the looks of. Anyway, there's no huge reason to not use sand from the beach, give it a good rinse and give it a try if you like the looks of it. But it's not like you're getting free live sand. Consider it dead sand.
