  1. 1-2 small insects per feed. depends on smallness tho. usually will not feed until 2 days after tail is absorbed. best to transfer to a pet pal with a small water dish so they can get wet if they want to. Keep somewhere warm with dim lighting. feed small crickets, locusts, passion vine hoppers (jetwings), fruitflies. Best thing would be to buy a wingless fruit fly colony from biosuppliers. you will need to purchase some fine netting or use a stocking on lid of pet pal as the fruit flies may escape. froglets are very good at finding water so u do not need alot of water area, this is where most go wrong as the food drowns and the water gets stinky. the fruit fly culture will last you 3 weeks+.
  2. put it closer to where he basks or spends most of the day. those arcadia light enhancers (fancy name for aluminium backing for the light) can be ordered from petware thru your local pet shop.
  3. closer the better. they'll start sleeping on it soon.
  4. take a decent net with fine netting and sweep thru long grass in a park. you'll get heaps this time of year. watch out for the men in white coats tho...
  5. have u sexed them? they are plenty big enough. if both boys u are in for a dust up.
  6. don't keep the tadpoles in a clean tank. if it looks like fish could live in it then it is all wrong. in the wild they lay eggs in temporary water so the young have no predators. best way is to keep tank green and give it light from either a light fitting or sunlight. tadpoles can breath air after first few days so don't worry about filters unless you use an undergravel with a low current. tadpoles will eat decaying vegetation so if your oxy weed is green then it is of little use. best food is standard flake and a green tank with dirty sides.
  7. top of laying medium needs to be same height as rest of tank. do not leave dirt or grassy areas that they can lay in. and use vermiculite as above.
  8. mmmm, yes that would be a reasonable assumption. most of the knowledgeable people are gone tho, very interested to know how you get on. Bet they refer you to Lynfield Vet..
  9. just a harmless worm feeding on the droppings. are they about 1.5mm long and swim around? i have those in with my turtles and no dramas. put some white cloud minnows in there if they bother you.
  10. arcadia- sold by petware- wholesale only - so you will need to contact your pet store and order in. If you have a 3 foot tube you want a C3, 4 foot is C4. Should be $70-$80. Cheapest in akl would be to order thru Pupuke Aquarium- they would prob. courier to you too.
  11. 20cm max from basking spot. if you get the arcadia unit you can hang the tube. That background is wicked. Can you get more?

  13. he won't be getting any u.v from that light dude. way too high. get an arcadia light control unit.
  14. yes mate, looks like boys. ivan thinks so, and he even had his glasses on. he knows his boxies.
  15. yeah mate. that is one of yours. petmania browns bay. I need a female...might use the evil albino funds...
  16. Give Gareth Lusty in Hamilton a call. He is a good guy from the herpetological society. Sorry dont have number, but he'll point you in the right direction, might even set you up with a gecko....
  17. if you have the greatest supa dupa uv flouro tube and have it more than 25cm form where your reptile is it does not matter how much calcium supplement you feed it, it will not be able to metabolise it. u.v tube needs to be close, even then sunshine, just a few hours a week is best. latest theories suggest that no reptiles need uv lighting, but i did have spasming issues when not using tubes, so in my opinion beardies do better with them.
  18. temp dependant sex determination varies between species, and yes you can candle eggs. just google for more info on the sex and temp there are 1000's of articles.
  19. those wetas would make great beardie food..
  20. Zookeepers and scientists are not as good as a hardcore hobbyist at keeping reptiles or frogs. best thing for n.z native frogs and geckos/tuatara is to export to germany/us/japan. trust me those guys will breed them quickly- why?, because there is money to be made. DOC could be the exporter and the profit could be used to conserve tracts of land. the hobby has a purpose in that it conserves species that are having a hard time in the wild. MAF and Erma and DOC need to wake up, their tactics at the moment result in smuggling, grey areas, dead animals and p.o'ed people.
