  1. do not feed mealworm- chitin content too high- do a google search. with young beardies- not sure of age of your one- it is good to smear occasional bug with live yoghurt culture. also works- or did work- with baby green igs. warm bath also has the desired effect but make sure not too deep.
  2. spinach is high in oxalates which can affect metabolism of calcium and hence bone growth if fed exclusively. if you feed it occasionally then no worries. they are pretty much like us in that all things are fine in moderation.
  3. puha(sp?) and dandelion vegetation and flowers are perfect and free. frozen peas and beans defrosted also good. strawberries and other fruit with the exception of avocado and citrus can also be fed. but free is best
  4. Legal to export aurea to USA from NZ but not from Oz- Ironic- this species threatened in Oz...big $$$$.
  5. They were wild caught when froglets, i have seen the site and the reeds etc are brown so they would not necessarily be selected against. No older ones seen tho, only froglets. I grabbed the ones ex last year and they are sooo cool.
  6. Cheers  , will try that this year....
  7. 40w light over basking spot is really good as it drys the shell out and the turtle will really enjoy the warmth.
  8. www.aussiepythons.com is the best site, just be aware there are heaps of different opinions and what works for one person may not work for you....best thing is to play it safe until you have more experience, and beardies are a great starting point
  9. Also do not use sand that has salt in it, causes problems so if the garden centre can not tell you then steer clear- or taste it
  10. 1. People use things like news paper/tiles/sand anything the young ones cant eat. Sometimes the young eat sand and it messes them up inside, so thats why 2. Dno lol, for a short period yes....depends on growth rate and how big it is currently(but im a not a expert) 3. If you keep the tank clean(pick up poo and things) they shouldn't smell My 2c[/qu Keep on paper for first 4-5 months then use builders sand or my fav. is grit from stone and water world auckland- see pics thread under reptiles- this is grit. It comes in green, charcoal and coffee. And they can freight. Tank size below needs 3 bags. That size tank cool for baby but adult needs larger. I use 5ft by 2 ft by 2ft and this is good as you can keep 2 in it if you want to later. They do not smell and droppings are easy to clean out- esp off grit. Best thing to sue is a kitty litter scoop as it leaves the sand and scoops the poo. Hope this helps.
  11. do you chill them to start the breeding cycle? I put mine outside but would be easier if they breed without doing that.
  12. 2 years maybe, and price will depend on numbers. will put on this forum tho before trademe.
  13. colour brightens as they get older. young coloured dragons are lighter in colour and have a bit of colour by the ears and eyes. after a few weeks they get a bit of colour on the spikes on the upper torso.
  14. Beardies are same colours as this years babies for sale under 'commercial buy and sell' boxies not for sale yet, and leps sold out this year.
  15. get an outdoor hutch cage to put them in for a few hours on sunny days- colour will be better. but make sure that no glass used and shade is provided or you will cook em.
  16. 1 male, 1-2 females sweet as in tank 5ft x 2ft x 2ft. As long as you keep together at start and don't muck around taking out putting in etc. Male will always hassle female during breeding season- that's their job. Male does have better fertility if kept in own tank and introduced during breeding season. Only rule is not 2 males, unless you have large outdoor cage. One dragon on own is sweet. but head bobbing, arm waving and activity level MUCH greater if you have 2. Male also colours up more.
  17. will be until they are cheap. which they are now....colours vary across the range- they are found throughout an area 5 x size of n.z. 4 years is the length of time thay have been above board- many years in n.z tho, makes u wonder what is not above board.......and what can be above board and what can't. living art is right, hard to tell what maf will do, but you can guarantee that it won't be consistent.
  18. fair call, living art one does look suspiciously like a dachiu tho....
  19. Americans love the fancy words...does not matter what you call it M, just look at the colour. It is not like this is a science that experienced people know more about. Off to feed my hypo red sand storm x purple moon frogs...
