  1. I sure hope you told the LFS person that it was not possible to do what they suggested. Cheers Suemack for persevering.
  2. looking good concrete floor sounds good and of course it is level
  3. When you say well maintained u/g filters what sort of regiem do you mean???? I have u/g filters in all my tanks (the whole three) and also fluvals, 204 & 304 With the u/g I vacumn the gravel weekly. When needed I take the uplift tube and bottle brush it out and all the other bits. Change the little charcol thing and zeolite thing. Replacing the airstone at the same time (maybe once in six months). So i am curious if I am being over zealous or lazy
  4. Welcome to NZ fishy addicts site littlekiwi I began with guppies and goldfish. Learnt so much from keeping them.
  5. This is my 'common' bristlenose bought at the Napier fish auction last year for $4
  6. I have the second sort that Caryl mentions and recently had to put them in with the three one spot gouramis and geophagus jupari All are co existing peacefully. I add 1 tablespoon of salt per water change and the tank would be around 150 litres. However as a beginner in this sort of brackish fish I am probably doing it all wrong. Tank has been like this now for four weeks. I feed blood worm, flake and all are accepted by the bumble bees. Idealy I would like a separate tank
  7. bring them on Chris I for one am looking forward to seeing them. The two discus I bought last Friday and lighter now however they have not coloured up to how they werein the shop. I am now wondering if the shop had a special light to show them off. They are just a normal brown/green with slight turquoise. Whereas in the shop they were pale brown with bright turquooise. mmmmmmmmm maybe they are still settling in. :-?

    cold tank

I always turn the filters and heaters off. Also the lights. That way I know that I am safe and not in for a shock. I seem to remember a thread where 'someone' got a kick out of their heater. Not a nice experience I believe and could be a fatal one. All is well and the fish are quite back to normal and tomorrow is another water change just in case the filters had been off too long.

    cold tank

I think I am losing my mind for last night I faithfully did a water change on my new 3 foot tank and also on the 3.5 foot discus tank. checked everything this morning in my rush out to work and thought the water was a tad on the cool side. Tonight on arriving home from work I thought the fish in the discus tank were a little 'sluggish'. No wonder I had forgotten to swith the tank on again. The temp was at 20 so I have quickly done another water change and added warmer water - also remembered to switch it on. The fish are much happier. Now I am concerned about a possible nitrate/nitrite spike. So will be watching closely. How embarrassing to make such a simple error.
  10. Pegasus it simply was what anyone else would do. I have been helped out so much by generous fishy ppl. Glad you are on the right track again fishnut. Scary when something like that happens.
  11. i can see how come you are so proud of them Chris. Thanks for sharing and persevering with the pics. Nice discus.
  12. glad to hear it here's to many fish......................a couple at a time LOL

  14. all I can see is a square with red x.
  15. Just out of curiousity how many of us wear gloves when working in the fish tank. I don't.
  16. fishnut I have all the test kits on hand and am also in mid canterbury. Would you like me to drop in on the way to work in the morning and drop the kits off for you to test the water??? Just pm me or ring (number pm'd for you). No cost.
  17. mmmmmmm It took my first tank approximately 6 weeks to cycle fully and then I found that it fluctuated at times. It took really quite awhile to settle and stabilize. I suggest you get the test kits and test weekly and every water change for awhile. do be careful not to add too many fish at once, that also can throw out a tanks eco system. How is everything going for you now???

    More hybrids

Just last week a fellow fish keeper and I were told by a LFS owner that if we bought a certain fish we would have nothing but good luck, met a rich man, and all sorts of rubbish. I was going to look around and buy some fish however walked out quite cross. I agree with ajbroome re negative racial sterotypes and positive ones too LOL against all racial sterotypes.
  20. i for one would be keen to see them Oscar Sheila
  21. (((((((Ira))))))))) sorry you lost your fish.
  22. sorry suemack, I have had no experience with kuhlis. Salt is what I used for my clowns when necessary.
  23. Once when my clown loaches got a touch of ick I used melafix and it killed them. Some loaches have no scales and therefore no protection. Also tetras cannot be medicated with melafix or anything containing methane green it seems.
  24. bsides Ira pretends to scorn discus while secretly he...........well we all know that hate is next to love
