  1. A further thing I found out about the number after the wattage was that the first number is the version number of the tube. ie. 735 = 7th version & 3500k; 835 = 8th version & 3500k. Did everybody else know this stuff?
  2. I love the third and fourth pictures, they are cool ideas.
  3. Ok so I found out there is no relation at all between Lumens and Kelvin. But the number after the watts indicates kelvin. ie. 38W/865 = 6500k.
  4. Is there a way to calculate the degrees kelvin of a flouro tube from the stated lumens? I was browsing the tubes in a couple of places but the degrees kelvin is not usually listed. I was mainly looking at Phillips or Osram sylvania tubes..... I googled but didn't find what I was looking for. I also visited the manufacturers websites which also didn't tell me what I was after... And as per usual the staff seemed inadequately educated as to the products the stores stocked, standing around with vacant expressions being entirely unhelpful.
  5. I got a lot of my rocks and stones from my garden. Gave them a good scrub with a nylon scourer and put them in my tank with no ill effects.
  6. I had a couple of random emails asking if I had requested access to my GMail account which was weird. So I changed my passwords. If you use Mozilla try clearing your private data by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Del or by clicking on Tools>Clear Private Data.
  7. Just put in more gravel. Make sure it isn't piled up around the plant stems. Should be fine.
  8. The dyeing process sounds nasty. Death By Dyeing dot Com has some nasty looking fish that have been dyed.
  9. Hmmm IMO it comes back to tha human desire to do something because they can. The jellybean picture fish are selectively bred, not dissimilar to the long-finned Betta sp. A person who thought they could make another buck.
  10. I can not possibly imagine how a fish that is bred to be deformed, with no tail, would be cute.
  11. The MAF plants office replied promptly. They sent me this link and said if it doesn't come up in search results then it is a banned plant. It didn't come up. Oh well, maybe I should move to Canada. http://www1.maf.govt.nz/cgi-bin/bioindex/bioindex.pl
  12. The neon rainbows will look fantastic!
  13. I found the MAF web page specifically on Plant Imports and emailed their office.
  14. I think the chances are slim to nought. Aaahhh the old metamorphose into the trifid trick. Good movie lol
  15. I had a community tank with a male Betta in. I added two Angels and within a day they had nipped off his fins and harrassed him to the point where he was floating upside down. He is in a small tank alone and his fins grew back. He is healthy as ever.
  16. These balls look awesome. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marimo I have seen these for sale on some online websites who will ship. How do I find out if it is allowed to be brought into NZ, or whether it is not permitted?
  17. Aren't all the fresh water crayfish for sale in LFS native NZ Koura that have been farmed?
  18. They are beautiful fish. I can see why you're proud
  19. When I went to see Philipcollis he had a breeding school of 30+ Cardinal tetras. I think they had been listed on TM a while a go also. HTH
  20. Awesome thanks. Thats 12 drops, much more realistic.
  21. I was reading this and wanted to try it to see how long it took. I know it's a couple of months on, but.... 2. Add your established bacterial source(s) and dose the tank with the pure ammonia up to 5ppm (as measured with your test kit). Add a few drops and test and repeat until 5ppm is achieved. So if 1ppm= 1 ml per litre, and 5ppm= 5ml per litre, does this mean 5ml of pure ammonia should be added per litre of water? Or have I completely missed the point? I was wondering because I wish to attempt this in a 60L tank, leading to an initial dose of 300mL of pure ammonia which seems a lot.....and is definitely a lot more than a few drops.
  22. What a fantastic article. I have a marine tank on my wish list, this article answered everything I wanted to know. It made me realise what I need to do to prepare for keeping a successful marine reef. Great job.
