  1. How is that meant to help? not being abrasive, but seems like a waste of time and melafix... You've got to remove as much mercury as possible, this may include removing substrate etc and biffing it. Heavy metal poisoning is not fun, so wear gloves etc. If the fish have ingested a bit, it is going to stay with them for life, there is no way to remove it, despite reported herbal remedies etc, the body (yours and your fishes) cannot metabolise mercury at all. case in Point, Tuna are being found with increasingly high levels of tuna, being predatory fish, thier prey might ingest tiny amounts, but being that it can't be metabolised, it builds up in their system. Sharks are reportedly in even worse state. just one article about mercury in tuna

I wouldn't stress it personally. 8 hours is not that long a period, the water in teh filter should be well oxygenated prior to cut-off, and not all bacteria are in the filter. They grow EVERYWHERE, substrate, glass, rocks, etc. Even if there is a slight lossof numbers, an extra 20% water change in the next week will help, and they will quickly re-generate. Bacteria are some of the hardiest organisms on the planet.
  3. Don't count on it... unless they specifically say it doesn't hold scratches, I think you'll still end up with them. (obviously it'll help, but wouldn't be calling it a home-run) Any soft brush will do, just as long as you don't hit the substrate/ store it in a dusty/sandy place, which will turn soft and gentle brush into a sandpaper-esque scratch-a-thon... in that way, rubber might actually actively attract dust etc with static. Also, I would be blasting aforementioned cleaning apparatus with a hose before each use to ensure scratch-free operation.
  4. second result long story short, hard to raise Gh without raising Kh and thereby pH. Naturally done with limestone rocks or coral sand.
  5. inevitable part of acrylic life, I believe. As long as you think about it and at least try to actively avoid them, but at the same time got to realise that they are going to occur. Just don't stress it too much when they do.
  6. timber, ply, f.glass, pond liner paint (check it fish safe, most are when cured/dry) and a single sheet of perspex/acrylic. (glass gets $$$ in large sheets, and also persp/acr less likely to go "Ping! Smash! Splash!" PM Livingart, he made an awesome tank like this, and I'm sure he will have reccomendations and things that he has learnt through doing it that would be benificial/ time saving.
  7. hollow log in the bottom left where he usually lurks... :slfg:
  8. ah, thats were spray can #2 comes in... or a larger jandal...
  9. Get a bigger, badder, hunter-killer spider! Some spray can insecticides (Sorry, no idea of brand etc, just I saw them at super-market) you can get leave a residue that stops crawling insects from coming in the house at all, spray a line around doors, windows etc. also good for flies (always around the windows) and means you dont have to destroy the spiders, merely make your place less inviting. hth
  10. use your Aquarium silicone, run a bead of it around the blue plastic seal , keeping it as tight to the lines as poss, on the other part, (or anywhere you DONT want silicone) a light grease with vaseline, so thin you can only just see where youve gone, press the 2 together and leave for awhile till silicone starts to go off, then remove and let it fully cure before trying again. you may have to trim around the edges etc for touchups, but it should give you a molded, near-perfect seal. good luck EDIT: or completely remove teh blue seal and start from scratch with the silicone?? also, may take 2 moulds to get it perfect, just make sure that if you re-do any areas, that there isn't Vaseline. (bit of meths on a cloth should sort that, give you a clean dry spot to go over) of course, this is all hypothetical and how I would do it, and results may vary...
  11. Have a bowl of water next to you, do a drop of hot glue, then with a WET finger shape it into the join. It'll NOT stick to your finger so long as it wet.
  12. Rise Against - Satellite <-- Addicted... love me some punk...
  13. your forgetting... ---> increase water changes for first couple weeks as new mini-cycle takes place... Long as you keep up water changes, and get as much media/water as poss into new tank, you'll be fine...
  14. 1) Is the fishes quality of life deteriorated by the tumor/growth? If no, leave it be. If yes: 2) is it worth taking its life in your hands to try a complicated and potentially deadly surgery... If yes, go get it done by someone who knows what they are doing, ie vet or similiar. If it is deteriorating its quality of life, but is not worth taking to the vet or other, then may I suggest euthenasia as the most humane course of action.
  15. I had a school of lemon tetras, they are more silver with a flash of yellow in teh fins, and a flash of black, they were a favourite until they decided that they didn't want to move house and promptly commited carpet-cide...
