Truck sounds like one lucky turtle. "Avon"... (came out of the Avon river a couple of years ago)... Had a hole right thru her shell the size of a 20c piece. I just cleaned, iodined and kept dry docking her at night over the winter and it amazingly grew a skin which then hardened. Incredible what they can recover from, but pity they have to. She's had pneumonia, eye infections, vit A deficiency... and was SOOO shy you hardly saw her for months, but shes now really placid and healthy. She's kinda special after what she's been thru. A real survivor.

Thats a fantastic idea, well done cricketman. Sorry my finances dont stretch to an inter-island day trip, but I wish you all well with your efforts and hope heaps of people turn up so you get lots done :bounce: Good Luck and I'll pray for great weather!!! Cheers -
You can usually get them at local garden centre. Not at there best at the moment tho. I have a few, currently some are flowering and really amazing. The pitcher plant isn't as hardy as my others. Last winter I left them all in conservatory, but too cold and pitcher went very back over most of plant...this winter I left it in a box window in Kitchen and although slowed down growth, it stayed green and is beginning to get new growth. Just keep them in a dish of water. A bit of shingle in bottom can be used and keep water up about 2cm up side of plant container all summer .... good idea to have dish a bit bigger and deeper than youd normally use for size of planter as provides better humidity around plant and doesn't dry out as much. It will attract its own food by smell...you wont smell it...so don't be tempted to drop flies in the pitchers. Keep it well supported so pitchers hang in an upright position..looks quite cool with a realistic looking frog hanging amongst the pitchers...

Anyone know how things are going? -
Just wondering what temperature people keep their Reeves turtles at? I know theres plenty of variations in temps suggested, and wonder what people with Reeves keep theres at, and why? Also what differences anyones noticed if they get a bit cold? Also as of today I'm "Turtle Sitting" a female Reeves who seems to be 'floating' a bit...not something my male tends to do. Anyone noticed this behaviour in Reeves before?

'Bank offer' sounds good! Is Charitable trust in the process of being formed? Is there anything specific we can do to help any of these processes? -

I tried emailing Tauranga city Council...found their web site and went to 'contact us' but the web site just kept telling me my email address was 'invalid' in big red letters... I'll keep trying, but not very helpful. Any ideas?? -

DonnaM replied to DonnaM's topic in Reptiles and Amphibians
I thought that might be the case...I knew they couldn't be used for the turtles, but thought there may be enough UV for growing plants for awhile. Never mind, to the dump then.... (Or I've got 3 if anyone wants them. ) -
Love the cattle, just beautiful! Those big eyes poking out thru the fringe are SOOO cute! Will the lighter coloured one stay that colour or darken?

I had 3 cats ...Mother, daughter and a 'wild' kitten that my mother cat beat up every time it hissed. After a week she'd completly tamed the wild kitten and allowed it to suckle her along with own kittens she had at the time. My 3 female cats were fixed and lived till 19, 20 and 21 yrs. No doubt in that time they killed many birds, mice and maybe even a rat or two...and annoyed neighbours with toileting in their gardens. But they were also much loved and affectionate pets who happily travelled in the car and visited disabled people and brought huge pleasure to many. I'm cross neighbours cats killed my 17 beautiful, huge goldfish when I moved the pond to a different part of the garden, but I wouldn't condemn them or their cats for it. I kept my cats inside at night by locking the cat-door. I do wish more people would get their cats fixed to prevent all the unwanted kittens and agree some people could be more responsible with their care, but then thats the same with any animal I guess...ducks included!! Watch out for the ducklings... Mum, Dad and 15 babies were crossing busy Rd at dusk last week. We managed to 'flash' oncoming traffic to prevent collisions. Thanks to the person who 'flashed' us to warn us first. fishtv those ducks probably do return every year. I reared a duckling as a teenager and she returned for many years, even bringing hubby and then hatching a clutch of ducklings in the garden. Used to respond to her name..very cool

Given that the baby turtles ate the tropical fish 20yrs ago....I confess to having nil tropical fish knowledge, so know nothing about their lighting needs. I have been told UV lights are only for the plants and not the fish anyway...so would used reptile lights be any good for this purpose? It seems a waste to discard 6mth old bulbs if they can be recycled for another purpose. Anyone have any ideas??

Too true about the snake necks...tho only 3 of my 6 seem to do it. The others can be handled heaps and love having their necks stroked and don't 'smell'... Do all Reeves do the 'odour thing?' Be good if thats what it was and not an illness eh broms2

Really interesting to hear about the cooters hothouse. I have a 13 yr old female I was "told" had been bred from a red ear/ Reeves mix, but I don't even know if we had Reeves 13 yrs ago? She is small with bright red ears and very red areas on edges of her shell. Never seen another like her. The 'fancies' are interesting to see on line too. Unfortunately the one beautiful 'rescue' one I got with scalloped edges and amazing yellow coloured shell was too full of infection to save.... She really was beautiful. Nice to hear about the cooter history. There's a shop here in ChCh that still has an advertising picture of a Cooter on its window... doubt they'll ever have one for sale tho. Good on you for what are are doing with them.
