  1. 4.6 at 2430 hrs... we'd just gone 24hrs without one registering on geonet...and then a good shaking, rolling 4.6 after midnight!
  2. aaand then we get woken at 3.13am again by a 4.5
  3. Good grief, just when we think its easing up a bit, we get another 4.4 that sends the house and nerves shaking! Had enough of this now
  4. Yes, they get up to some funny antics Pity the 'tidal wave' from the earthquake broke the basking area
  5. Was going to post this a couple of weeks ago, but an earthquake got in the way :-? Turtles of course and they did the posing, no photodoctoring.
  6. aaannnd another shake up... Just when you start to relax again.....
  7. http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/c ... earthquake The Press phoned me yesterday to see how things were as wanted to print a "good News" story. So they arrived around 5.45 pm to photograph and ask questions and it was in today. (Just ignore his typos..and I dont have a pond inside...its outside  ) Such a relief to be able to use the water again! :bounce: That will really relieve the pressure on the turtle care. Getting a couple of filters today from Erica, so can set up a 4ft tank and fill with water to relieve some of the overcrowding in a couple of tanks.
  8. Won't say no to any help at the moment Not sure when we can trust the water again with all these aftershocks :-?
  9. HI Caryl, Enough left in pond to do one more round on all the tanks. Then I'll need to fill pond again and treat with bleach.... when I'm not shaking and can work out percentages etc. Off to work now.... bit late, but hey... we've had an earthquake or 100 Milo is NOT happy..... and getting worse each day. Turtles seem to be reasonably oblivious... as far as I can tell anyway, but not happy at not being fed for a few days  Will feed them again tonite, just dry fish, not meat, to reduce waste.
  10. Funny how last week we'd have said. "WOW" a 5.1 earthquake!... now its only a 5.1.... perspective changes My power stays on...so far, but I keep losing internet frequently. Amazing how you find you rely on it when its not available. Right, heart pounding and fingers still shaking too much to type any more... ..and that was another little roll......
  11. I have a Via Aqua 750 canister filter with a broken impellar shaft that I need to get running. (Can use water bucketed from newly dug pond). If anyone has something that would fit, please let me know ASAP. I've had to start overcrowding tanks and need to get more space as overcrowded tanks will lead to more problems with turtle waste and also aggression. I've a couple of useless eheim 2213s which cant cope with a 4ft turtle tank. I may well get more turtles, so if someone can help with that broken impellar shaft, let me know Have to go to work soon... I really DONT want to be away from home and not know whats happening with the tanks during the ongoing quakes
  12. I think the anticipation is getting worse as this drags on and on .....will this be the big one? Is it the last one? Will there be more after we've had a break for a few hours? Will the power and water stay on?..... I've been very fortunate with not having broken tanks, but its always in the back of your mind. Ph call from someone bringing a large turtle around today after their tank collapsed. Not sure where it will go??
  13. I had a brief call with Nav today and he said he had some mess but nothing too drastic Just got home from work. I dont like being away from home when theres been some big aftershocks. It always leaves you wondering whats happening while you're not there. I was talking to a staff member who had gone into work soon after the main quake. She said she hadnt been able to cross over Colombo St for the traffic jam of people heading up the hills.... at 5.30am.... I've kinda had enough now... everywhere you go theres rubble and tired people. Pleased to see not too much loss at the aquarium! It could have been horrific if that had all gone... Hopefully the injured fish will pull through.
  14. Just out of commision. It was moved into middle of floor to get water from behind, so now the fun will be trying to move it back lol! So sad about the lemur
  15. Anyone know how the Sourthern Encounter Aquarium in town is????
  16. Only just got the internet on.... I'm very fortunate. Waves of water splashed up walls and across floors, but I was somehow managing to 'wobble' through the house and throw great piles of towels and sheets over the floor as water slopped out. Basking ramp in 6 ft tank in lounge broke with force of a water wave and shattered down onto turtles and pleco but all OK. Some cracks in 1 bedroom and minor ornaments stuff broken. Having water levels lower then fish tanks helped. I have several borrowed heaters and dehumidifiers going day and night drying carpets. The ponds outside were significantly thrown about. Theres only 1 occupied with 17 large turtles and the other 2 had been revamped significantly last WE and filled with fresh water. They sloshed out and carried bark, mud etc for along way over paths etc. 2 neighbours arrived at 5am and we were slopping up water straight away. I never lost power but I lost water. Later in day niece helped bucket water from pond into bath for the displaced turtles. I had to work Sat pm. Driving to peoples homes between 5.30-9.30pm. But I had to start at 2.30pm instead and had a manager drive and I did visits so we could be finished before dark. It was very sobering driving all over CHCH and seeing how much damage there was. Just everywhere..every street has something from broken chimneys to whole buildings collapsed. The problem now is that the water may be contaminated and I cant do water changes. I'm normally doing 3 or 4 tanks every 2 days in a constant tank clean cycle. So now tanks are beginning to smell! Water is clouding and its not a healthy environment for turtles .... or me! May need to look at trying to bucket water in and do minor changes, but its a huge amount of work  Been really tired with not much sleep, cleaning up and working. Need to work again today to. It was the loudest, strangest noise during the earthquake...theres a constant anxiety of... will it happen again....
  17. Wow...what an amazing memory you have livingart
  18. I dont know what to say Spoon..... Not sure if I should congratulate you or call an ambulance    And yes Matt I tried it too
  19. I wonder how many people tried to do that after they read it...
  20. mmmm will have to wait and see what its like... a bit nerve wracking  Is on sky channel 16 and TVNZ6. I cant get either lol! Was filmed back in Autumn... long time ago
  21. I hope to call in for a brief 'hello' around 7.30ishhhhh, but will be at work and inbetween 'visits' so wont be able to stay long.
  22. Awww thats just loverly What was the 'free' sign they were sitting on?
  23. I'd be heading for an x.ray with that head position. $66 for a turtle x.ray... I guess similar for beardie? But as you say, if observation suggests its not going to make it then maybe best not to prolong possible suffering. Have you got a friendly vet who would do an autopsy for educational purposes? If you dont do one yourself? So sad and preventable.
