  1. Seems there was a leak in the hose just where it connected to the BBQ. But the fire went right down the hose and the top of the gas bottle was on fire as well. So the tap on the gas bottle is now just a thin sharp piece of metal. Thats what the fireman burnt his thumb on. It was a very deep burn! Like one of those nasty cracks some people get on their heels... all seared with the heat so no bleeding or anything... Oh and they did go to fire first ....and then the turtles  It was one of those moments when you go... do we phone 111? Will it go out? Its not getting any bigger? But its still burning? Do we turn off the taps on the BBQ or leave it and get away? ( we kept away from it)... Do I get the turtles out of that pond? ... But the 111 dispatcher said get away so we did. The fire truck was on way back to station when it got the call, so they were extra quick. They did walk thru the front gate, find out what was wrong and then start running down towards the area when I told them it was still on fire...... So be warned... check your gas bottles are ok after a winter of not being used...
  2. They spent more time chatting about all the turtles then they did putting out the fire 8)
  3. Not too bad Carol, not too bad
  4. Well first there was that nice lil earthquake that shook us all up... then while we were in a state of civil emergency, some bored teenagers thought it meant civil disobedience and stole my letter box  Then today while we're relaxing in the sun, chicken cooking on the BBQ, watching turtles basking in the pond next to us ... theres a loud pop and the gas bottle and hose catches fire! Ho hum... ran in to get the phone as the flames werent going out.. only to remember the ph was on the table in the BBQ area  . So called 111 and nice big fire truck pulls up outside the gate almost immediately (fire station around the corner) and 2 firemen go down and deal with it all. One fireman burnt a hole right thru his glove and caused a burn on his thumb that looked like a deep cut, as it immediately sealed with the heat of the melted gas bottle tap he was trying to turn off OUCH!! Think I'll go to bed and not get up tomorrow
  5. Well done for following the good advice given I've had a turtle poop out stones after several YEARS of no stones in tank.. Stones are not good for turtles or axies.
  6. You can visit 'Turtle Rescue and Rehoming', but only turtles and a couple of tree frogs there No lizards etc.
  7. I just got back from Wellington.... went to 'WOW'.... was fabulous! So will do a coleslaw or salad tomorrow as have 3 tank cleans and 4 canister filters to clean before you all arrive  If warm, we can sit outside for awhile
  8. Thats it! At least I had all the letters...just around the wrong way
  9. Looks like spaghnum moss... or however you spell it
  10. Time of meeting? 5pm or 5.30? So long since I've been to one, I forgot!
  11. Nope, I wouldnt do that to a turtle. She did that all by herself! I got home and found her like that.... good lesson in 'hurrying along the tank maker to get that big tank made" She wasnt trying to climb out or anything, just basking on top of the light.... I took photos... old camera, so not very clear... walked up to her and lifted her down...and she just climbed right back up there. Several times! By then of course there was beanbags all around the tank and a freezer basket upside down on that end to try and deter her... She'd been hibernating and had not been doing too well, so unexpectedly had to come inside over the rest of the winter. It was a bit tricky with the amount of turtles and resources I had at the time. Then there was a big insurance job and mess for 2 mths when a rotten wall was discovered next to this tank due to a leaking pipe in the wall... so she certainly picked her timing! Shes made it thru this winter outside tho, so all good Also she weighs 2 kilos and has arthritis in her left front leg, so not an easy thing to lift that big body up there.....
  12. :bounce: :bounce: Its fixed! Don't know why? I also contacted the tech team at photobucket who sent me a very informative email about checking if I'd changed firewall settings and setting something to "medium" etc etc... none of which made alot of sense to a total non computer person... but problem solved! I just hope it stays that way
  13. Ok... its a conspiracy then... coz I cant! 8) Just the txt. So at least I know it must be my computer and they're not all lost in cyberspace.... Time to turn off the computer and head to bed. Will see whats happening with it in the morning. (I didnt know so many people were up this late on a sunday night... or should that be Monday morning  )

  18. and as we know turtles quickly grow out of their tanks
  19. And then theres the story of the tiny baby reeves who climbed up the back wall of one of those tanks and through the holes at the top and was found in another area of the house.... Alive and furry, but Ok....we hope! Also the hang-on filter has carbon in it, which needs replacing about every 2 wks with a turtle or it just leaches toxins back into the water... Turtles don't stay small for very long
  20. yes, 4 ft for a male.... but a female definately needs a pond....
  21. Awesome pics! Definately need to put Taronga Zoo on the list if I ever get over there for a holiday
  22. Also the hang-on filter is pretty much a waste of time.
  23. Goodness! Are you able to get a trap for the stray to stop this happening again?
  24. Yes mcrudd, all trying to be closest to the warmest spot. Will stay like that for ages too. Interesting sight when the bottom one decides to cool down and dives into the water....
