  1. Nimbus (or Nimby, Nimrod, Nimstick, Bus, Bus-bus, Noo-noo-noo-noo-noo depending upon who is talking to him)
  2. There's a strange creature on my tank...
  3. Here's a link to some aftermarket lighting upgrades for RSM's - similar probably available elsewhere (I'm not aware of anything available locally), but these seem like nice examples; http://www.nanocustoms.com/index.php?manufacturers_id=5
  4. Yea, they look kind of gimmicky, and I'm not sure that they would actually be that interesting to look at - fish and fish tanks look best viewed from the side.
  5. It has passed the blockage (taken a dump!) - if you look around in the tank you might find a lump of faeces with bubbles in it. Whatever you feed Discus, you have to make sure that it contains enough roughage. I use a basic diet of JBL Gala (flake with dried bloodworms) and frozen bloodworms twice a week, with JBL Discus and Cichlid every few days instead. It seems about right.
  6. Not until I get rid of some freshwater tanks... but yes, I can see myself ending up with one big marine tank eventually. I really do find it a lot more rewarding than freshwater now - I like that it is always changing and requires ongoing learning. With freshwater you reach a kind of critical mass with knowledge and you can turn your hand to most aspects of it from there, whereas with saltwater there is always something new to learn, and everything you change affects everything else, and not always as you had assumed it would. I like the challenge.
  7. It has a swim bladder / constipation problem. Discus regulate their bouyancy by releasing gas from an organ attached to their intestines - fart gas, in fact. You'll need to feed it more frozen blood worms and less processed / flake type foods so that it can get rid of the gas when it needs to. For now I'd drop the temperature to about 27 so that the expanding gas doesn't rupture its intestines etc. and wait.
  8. Suction cups don't last forever and need to be cleaned and /or replaced periodically. If it is new equipment return it for a replacement, otherwise take the advice above and try cleaning them and the glass. If that doesn't work, you might havve to buy new ones - Eheim ones work pretty well, and are available in different sizes - you might be able to fit bigger / stronger ones.
  9. It's personal preference, but I like to try and 'balance' colour, so maybe something like a yellow leather of something might look good on the right?
  10. So wilson (and others), having viewed it in the flesh, do you have any comments / constructive criticism of my RSM? I'm always glad to hear what other people think, including what they do and don't like about it - give me your thoughts...
  11. Its gone now anyhoo... was definitely one of the most colourful I've seen, but also the smallest. Hope it has a good new home.
  12. Yes, TANK water - remind me not to buy fish on Friday afternoons
  13. I reckon you'd be best to take as long as you can - I generally put them in the tank, in their bag to heat up, then go watch telly. Each advert break I remove some water from the bag with a glass, tip it down the drain, then refill the bag with the same amount of tank water. After about 40 minutes, I net the fish and put it in the tank - that way if their is anything nasty in the transport water most of it will get flushed away.
  14. It seemed pretty healthy yesturday - plenty of flesh on its bones, and swimming fine
  15. Were you after one? They are very nice fish

I think you could get away with the 2 Oscars and a Plec - I have a breeding pair of Oscars and a Rusty Plec in a tank that is about 65 USG, but they have a 5 x volume/hour filter and still get 90% water changes a week.
  17. Does your tank have gravel? Some Plecs and BN will bury themselves completely if they feel threatened. You may well find that it has literally 'gone to ground'. Just wait until after dark, then sneak in and take a look, or VERY GENTLY run your fingers through the gravel if you really need to know.
  18. I think you might begin to see the problems with your plan soon
  19. To fatten up hatchetfish you will need to feed them A LOT of dried insect larvae - it has to float around so they can find and eat it, and you'll have to be very careful that you don't end up overfeeding the rest of the tank. Good luck.
  20. Yes, its quite like the old one, only a size bigger. She is very happy with it, though, and spent last night roaming around showing it off
  21. Anyhoo, back to the RSM... :bounce:
