  1. It sounds as if it isn't the heat source that is the problem, but heat retention. I'd have another look at your insulation and see if you can improve that. A lot of fishrooms have very little heating - mine has none, other than a 150 watt heater in two of the tanks.
  2. If you are trying to alter the chemistry of your water, it is best to put it into a mesh bag in your filter - it will make a real mess if you just dump it into your tank. Make sure you don't pack it too tightly or it will stop your filter pumping properly. You also need to be a bit careful and monitor the pH, because it can have varrying effects.

They aren't young, they are runts - look at the size of they eyes relative to the body compared to the ones pictured in the link. Big eyes and small bodies mean that they aren't exactly best quality

Top one looks like poorly coloured Bolivian Butterfly Rams http://www.aquariumlife.net/profiles/so ... 100050.asp The bottom is a Corydoras, possibly Schwartzi? http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/sp ... ies_id=293
  5. Unfortunately 'very fine' and 'last a long time' tend not to go together, especially if you want to maintain flow. The problem with very fine filter membranes is that they can clog easily and stop your pump. There are some products made by the likes of JBL which are a little bit like felt, but they aren't very reuseable. I'd try some good quality 'normal' wool - the cheap stuff collapses and lets crud around the side.
  6. Is this an African Chiclid tank? Do you have any plants in it? I notice you have another thread asking about fish 'flashing' - perhaps you need to start by telling us more about your set-up and your water values so that we can get a good idea about what's going on. Pics would be great too if you can post them up.
  7. Yea, for some reason the Acan seems to play havoc with the autofocus on my camera - the pictures often come out looking awful
  8. Yep - as a general rule (there are exceptions, like Tiger Lotus) any plant with a varigated leaf (more than one colour on the leaf) is a terrestrial plant and not suitable for long term aquarium use. That isn't to say they won't survive submersed for a month or two, but they will eventually die. On the flip side, you can often pick up things like Black Mondo grass at pet shops for a fraction of the price they go for at a plant shop - that's where all the ones in my garden came from
  9. Yep, I'd have to agree with the above - and you can buy good quality small pumps/filters locally anyway, so why run the risk?
  10. Here's a theory - the samples were pure aragonite and tested fine. The larger quanities also contained a whole pile of aragonite dust, which has disolved into your water, causing a temporary rise in pH. Do a big (90%) water change to flush it out, and see if the pH drops. If it does, you know it was a one-off and you don't need to worry. If it doesn't, test water from another tank to verify the accuracy (or otherwise) of your test kit.
  11. Yes, but 100ml is a bit different from 5000ml. I think a lot of it depends upon the security guys too. I know a couple of them quite well, and if you strike them as a reasonable sort of person they'll just wave you through. If you strike them as something else, they'll give you the run around for the hell of it. Anyone with a Metallica T shirt gets special attention
  12. The problem is that you don't want to discover that it is a problem 10 minutes before you are due to board.
  13. A few more random pics... A wierd two mouthed 11 arm Xenia head: It should only have one mouth and 8 arms like this one: And the Acan eats shrimp... And its a bit hard to tell from this photo, but it seems to be growing over the AquaKneadit
  14. Here's a few pics of the skimmer - you can see that the bulk of the munge just doesn't make it to the cup - it just collects around the inside.
  15. Our new guy even bought in savouries to celebrate! Noice!
  16. Anything like that that could represent a hazzard will be pounced on (if spilt people could slip on it - if it leaks it can short wiring - or you could be a 'fish-bomber' if you know how to create liquid explosive). You'd be best to courier them
  17. I reckon that it is a local eye infection - you could treat it with Furan, but it doesn't look too bad - I'd just leave it for now.
  18. Glass isn't always recycled into glass - some of the tempered stuff can't be recycled easily, so they use it for other things. They even came up with a way of turning into a substitute for road gravel.
  19. Actually it doesn't have much at all. I struggle to get a hardness reading, even, although I know water quality varies around town.
  20. Hi Jim - if you like Danios and Tetras, then they would be a fine place to start. I'd also recommend that you buy testkits for Nitrite and Nitrate (and Ammonia as well if you want to, although it is largely redundant after a day or two) and monitor the levels. If you haven't done so already Google 'Cycle Aquarium' and 'Nitrogen Cycle Aquarium' and find out about the nitrogen cycle. Have fun
  21. Here, send it to this dude...
  22. It should be fine, but it isn't a good idea to use it unless you can confirm that the fish is suffering from a bacterial or fungal infection, otherwise it will weaken it further without any benefit - bung up a picture so we can all put our heads together.
  23. I'm talking about the Red Sea float-type Hydrometer being consistently wrong rather than the salt mix - although I wouldn't guarantee that either. I'm using Pro Salt to 1.025, but my levels are often below 450ppm - usually more like 400ppm - in fact I'm supplementing Ca at the moment. I suspect the LPS and ravid Blue Acro might use quite a bit of it up.
  24. The camera is sitting on the couch at home, but no, Peep isn't very photogenic today, having died yesturday afternoon after hopping around seemingly fine. Maybe it was shock or an internal injury
  25. Ah yes... thems were the days...
