livingart reacted to Caryl in Passing of a great member and man.
If there is anyone on these forums who knew Grant, his funeral will be livestreamed Saturday afternoon;

livingart reacted to Caryl in Keeping white bait and native shrimp.
The forum runs but with few people making use of it as they prefer instant answers from random unknowns on the internet! (old lady opinion 😉 )
Stella has 3 books published - Freshwater Fishes of NZ (available from Fishpond, Mighty Ape, The Nile NZ) and 2 versions of The NZ Native Freshwater Aquarium (Mighty Ape, Trade Me, The Nile NZ) and now lives in the South Island.

livingart got a reaction from toi_ss in Using straight natural sea water
Sorry no idea on Waitematas water quality,
if you are keeping local marine fauna no need to alter salinity
my carpet sharks outgrew a 270 x 120 x 60cm in 2 years, having a circular enclosure means they can swim for a long time
yes 2hp will cover that size

livingart got a reaction from toi_ss in Cleanup crew for my lagoon aquarium?
That hasn't been my experience with them, they eat fish that have died usually
And only attempt to catch fish when not fed enough

livingart reacted to Caryl in Im getting a new betta fish any tips?
A Betta only lives 2 - 3 years so if you choose the biggest in the display, it is also possibly the oldest and may already be 12 months or more old.
How do you know it was over-feeding that killed the last one?
Bettas need a diet high in protein so live food is good or specially formulated fish food for bettas.
Here is a really good article about how much to feed your betta that should help you...

livingart reacted to Caryl in Can a bristlenose pleco eat a dead betta fish overnight?
Easily. When you consider most of the fish is only fins there is not much body. 3 bristlenoses could easily eat all the evidence overnight. They are nocturnal so do their food foraging at night. Sorry you lost the fish but, as said in the other post, have you been testing your aquarium water?

So it turns out one of my old decorations (removed it from my tank a while ago to see if it was causing the mystery illness) has tiny holes in it and was actually hollow. It was sitting upright but has still somehow not drained completely.
So that's an exciting new source of contaminated water.
One option is to cut off the bottom centimeter so it drains freely, clean it out in the same way as the tanks and fill it with something so it's solid. Or just throw it away and figure out an alternative.

livingart reacted to Godly3vil in Pond soil for planted aquariums
From what I have researched any organic potting mix will be fine. Just make sure it is actually organic.
Daltons Aquatic Mix is the most common dirt to use.

What you are proposing will definitely work, they are the best escape artists and finding their way into filters off limit areas etc.
Having access to 3D printer will help with tight fits on structure and support ledges on the walls to avoid collapses.
Can probably get away without heating and minnows make good tank mates
Search in the reptile/amphibian forum for some previous builds

Well that didn't take long - turns out there's now a Hollywood Fish Farm in my area and a 21L tank followed me home somehow...
