Water changes every 2 weeks 25% . Collect water locally with a 1,000 litre on a trailer and fill with a 12v bilge pump.

Yes they are, they are starting to harass their tank mates of a night time.
They are now at a breeding age and size so have my fingers crossed.

livingart reacted to Fruju in What 'rare and unusual' are people keeping these days?
Here is one of my 'rare' fishes. It's a male Palmas buttekoferi approx. 30cm.
He has quite a lot of yellow on him compared to the other bichirs we get here.
Nice Cories guys.

livingart reacted to hovmoller in What 'rare and unusual' are people keeping these days?
I suppose these qualify as being rare in NZ:
Geophagus sp. "Red Head". Hopefully we can spread them around and make them not so rare.

Ok I'll participate. I suppose it could fall in the rare category.
I still have two Bandit Cories - C. Metae. These are no longer allowed to be imported (not sure why) so are hard to come by.
I am still VERY keen to breed these, so if anyone has any the would like to sell me please send me a message.

livingart reacted to Caryl in Pond Liner
Damn, I will have to go and buy some stilettos then
We thought the pond leak was worse but a closer look revealed a blocked bit in the filter meant the box inside the decorative housing was overflowing, hence the more dramatic water loss. Filter has been cleaned out and we reduced the water flow too.
Would still like to line the pond but unsure if EQC will pay for it as I don't think we can prove it has only been leaking since, and as a direct result of, the quake.

EPDM rubber pond liner won't crack in an earthquake.

That was also my thought. The streak in the tail (if it looks like a blood streak) could indicate bacterial septicemia which can also link back to bad quality water. If it is indeed that then furan is one of the very few options available in NZ.

livingart reacted to Caryl in T&E Etiquette
I would like to remind members that it is polite to respond to someone when they have gone to the trouble to post/courier items to you. A simple "Thank you, the goods arrived safely" is enough. I am sick of posting items only to never hear from the recipient, even when I have sent a PM asking if the goods had arrived. Although I assume they did so, or they would have complained, a little courtesy would not go amiss!

livingart reacted to Colour_genes in Heads Up - pos Sptted/Rio Ucayali Bristlenoses, Chch.
I went into Petstock (general pet store) in Northwoods, Christchurch today for some fish food, and had a quick look in their tanks (as you do!).
They have a tank containing 'Bristlenose $13' - there are at least 5 fish I could see and none of them are your regular, standard BN. Same general shape, possibly slightly more flattened head, black body with small whitish spots/dots, orangey edges & markings on their fins. Couldn't get a photo sorry, but look just like the photos of Rio Ucayali on 'Planet catfish'. The shop assistant checked and said they came from an importer based in the North Is.
I just don't have room for them in my tanks atm, but someone else might like the chance to grab something a bit more exotic than the usual BN?
Cheers

The bigger the better when doing salt water, you will need to upgrade it later.
