never had a bn baby up the pipe of an external filter before (tso long as it has the end thingy on it but stranger things have happened i guess
-
wont matter dixon they may carry a recessive gene and still all look brown just ask adodge just bred bn both parents brown 1/2 babies are brown and 1/2 are golden
-
lol adodge and well done as fireenz said just leave em to it thou you could move them to another tsnk if you wish but at that size they are a bugga to catch
-
i totally agree with you adodge but just because i own an L18 gold nugget dosent mean the one at the LFs is one but if you started a thread like "thinking of owning a L18 " id be able to tell you of my experiences with them and like wise other ppl that own them but having all of my plecs listed here dosent help you anymore than the above question see my point As for having jane and barry owning a pair but three thousand miles apart i think if jane or barry wanted to breed them they would post a WTB in the private exchange and the other would reply if so in mind As for me i pretty much know of who the pleco ppl are in here and ask them if im in the hunt for one or post in the private exchange forum dont see why this needs to change, except to maybe satisfy someone elses curiosity
-
if you have one in mind adodge why not post a question in here and whatever pleco ppl come in will answer it for you thought that was what the forum was for ?

Posted: Tue Apr 29, 2008 10:05 am Post subject: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote: yes you heard right thisis my dwarf gba ahahahaha Quote: I have a stumpy girl for him! Pair them up. _________________ FW Com. Tanks: BN Pair, 2 Whiptail,6 cardinal tetra, 1 Bolivian Ram,2 dwarf loach,2kuhli loach,1 hoplo,5 albino scalare. geez dixon make up yer mind so its ok to breed inferior dwarf GBAs but not ok to cross breed ? sounds hypocritical to me as for yr babies haziel just leave them to it ,some may not make it, but not many will be eaten ,.Someone here posted once that they used them as feeder fish but most "pleco breeders "know that even as babies they have spines in their cheeks from a young age and use it to pierce a fish throat if swallowed most if not all fish know this and dont eat them they may nibble at them in curiousity but ive never seen one been eaten by another fish apart from another pleco and only when its dead As for the pairing it can happen that they will cross breed and as dixon advised its not ideal for the hobby if you wish to breed them in the future just make sure that there is only one type in the breeding tank to ensure correct strain

smaller one posssibly a runt of a litter does happen or its female and grows smaller

did you medicate the tank ? if so run carbon for at least 24 hours in yr filter and do 1/2 water change if not two choices two 1/2 water changes over three days or strip tank and start again and use cycled water out of other tank to get it started dont strip filter just rinse in old water this should be fine which ever makes you feel more better but either should suffice just IMO

hmmm well hard one to clearly identify with so many different cases . i have bred plecos for years and the same ones over and over i do get new lines of blood in now and then but ive never had the symptoms you ppl are decribing but then ive had ppl say theres died in a week or so what i do find is alot of ppl treat them with little respect and toss them in the tank with little regard never feed them and expect them to just survive (not saying thats any of you ppl) but heres some points to note Like any fish they suffer from low temp and ph shock by this i mean i have had bn at room temp but their growth is slowed by a slow metabolism and they like other tropicals fall subject to low immune sytem Poor diet - they DO NOT just eat algae and need wood and courgette as a main diet Overcrowding - leads to stress and low immune system plus it tends to lower the ph ( this is breeders ph not yrs ) alot of these bn are bred in small tanks and when they are days old thats fine but as they grow they eat and they poo alot fresh water and alot of it produces good strong fish Imported fish are quarintined (sp) and medicated for disease this lowers their immune system and most often (esp in the hypans ) they are feed a vege diet only which means they are usually overcrowded and underfeed or fed the wrong food coz MAF dont know the difference Remember just coz it has a amoured plate its not bulletproof alot of ppl feed their fish high protien foods and any pleco will eat this if nothing else is available and even will when there is something else but whats important is a well balanced diet Also pays to remember plecos get everywhere in bogwood ,on stones and all over the glass where most fish wont venture ,always make a safe place for it to rest and hide and one thats aquaruim safe Any toxins in the water including ammonia ,are most concentrated at the lower part of the aquarium so it will be the pleco that gets most effected some ppl will tell you otherwise but thats what i have found Finally the inbreeding like any fish it dosent pay to inbreed for too long and experienced breeders know this and i i see no reason why these guys should be any different but usually its the way in which they have been raised and transported that does the most damage before they get into yr tank , ive had plecos in bog wood given up for dead and chucked out on the back lawn only to find it still alive in there the next day ,ive had a tank crack and everything fry like bacon except for the pleco ive evn found a dried up pleco on a concrete floor after jumping out put it back in a tank and its still alive today So yes they are hardy and once introduced are very robust but treat them like any other fish in yr tank with care and consideration and they should be fine hth

cant really figure out yr intention here seems you might be suffereing from south island syndrome ...never asked for any recognition for having being the first to breed them so not upset at all as for JBL tabis THE MANUFACTURER that being JBL have stated DO NOT FEED TO HYPANS but rather than accepting that advise given by another member as being as true as yr acclaimed spawning you dismiss it so are condtridicting one claim from another i am enjoying my achievemnet if you want to call it that and if i want to take acclaim can take the fact that at least mine survive to this day so I AM the first to get them to this stage As for yr advise i still stand by my remark "how can you advise on a complete death rate for survival? n.b i wont respond to this reply as i find when i argue with idiots they tend to bring me down to their level and beat me with experience so enjoy posting what you like from here on in this thread

the conch just to clarify matters a great deal of ppl "claim " to have bred all sorts of things (i can only assume for their ego ) you can appreciate photos or registered breedings seperate the confirmed breeders from the "wannabe's " i never put you in either category merely asked for proof of yr claim which you are unable to produce that being the way it is i neither deny your claim nor regard it as a breeding But a breeding is one thing ,to offer advise on raising them with a "complete die off rate " i think is careless to say the least especially when part of your advise is jabi tabis which (no known article ) but straight from the manufactures lips should not be fed to hypans (ring them and ask them yrself ) perhaps this was yr downfall in raising the young If you do not rate a freshwater breeding of a fish, that is not only hard to find in new zealand, nor is it on the allowed imported list anymore, as anything to rate very much so that others like dandilia may enjoy them then i then question yr reasoning for fishkeeping or is it to merely sit on here and claim to do things that havent been done before ,without proof , and try to downplay anyone who has ??? happy fishkeeping if you remember what that is
-
L270 - I sold 4 of these to a local fella who wanted to breed them (I got several spawns but never raised the young) conch : all due respect but having bred them ive never seen a registered post by anyone in new zealand before so when did you breed them? pics would be nice to confirm this breeding and mine are all well and alive after more than five weeks without leaves and jabi tabis but thanks for the input ... dantez girl- they will be about a year away from sale i expect at this stage

Cant Keep any BN's alive!!! What am I doing wrong???
mr pleco replied to Hannahbell's topic in Diseases
DEFINETLY ! buy one at a time also look at yr heaters wood and any caves these guys get evrywhere yr other fish cant a cracked heater that emits electricity when hot into the water may only effect yr plecos as they are sucking ON the heater, caves and bogwood may contain some thing that only these guys come into contact with i have 35 tanks and thousands of plecos one tank in particular killed off every BN pleco i put it in for weeks but discus and all other fish were fine ended up found a small piece of glass from mercury vapour lamp had fallen in tank and since removal BN plecos are all good in that tank really need parameters posted as ammonia and nirtates start from the bottom of the tank up (more concentrated at lower levels ) this will effect bottom dwellers more than top swimmers )pls post might be nothing but worth posting check everything before risking any more money it aint a matter of persisting ,something isnt right for these wonderful hardy fellas , -
the actual cause as i remember ( i remember the days of having a bucket full ) to stop selling them was that MAF had it in their head they could carry the disease TB dont ask me to spell it id have to google it but was possible ,in their eyes if you hadnt had yr shots or had a cut or break in yr skin, but yep about twenty years ago worked at HHF in MT Roskill and we sold them by the bucket load as i remember it was about $2 a handful would love to get a culture started if anyone is willing to sell me some (have bath will travel  )
-
dont tempt me ill pay for the tickets even
-
hmm holiday jake yep ill "look after them for a while .... no comment on cave cant have it back yet they have bred a third time so its kinda occupied at the moment  geez fireneenz i get in enough trouble without yr help thanks

-
early days yet jayci but yes if they survive and hopefully the parents respawn cheers adodge
-
sad to hear of yr loss JK sounds like youve done most of the process neons are funny lil fish and you can lose some they even have neon disease which seems almost soley related to just them hence the name when you say ph is good and nitrate etc would be handy to let us know what good is ...only reason can be that a good ph is anywhere between 6.8 and 7.4 but neons prefer around 6.8 ..Also a Ph fluctuation or temp change can have effects and wont be picked up by yr readings unless you do that reading at very water change HTH
-
thanks guys will keep you posted on progress and hopefully some pics to boot when they come out of their cave
-
dunno yet dixon i had 8 now i estimate maybe 25 - 30
