what a week in the week that was as stated before royal whiptails bred after comming home from AFKA meeting unfortunatley after lights out the next day eggs dissappeared think i have a rogue pleco in the tank ....bugga meanwhile downstairs rhino whiptails that had babies last month layed again still eggs at the moment ... Then all six pairs of BN layed in two days with over 250 eggs you can imajine ive been quite busy ..and now after seeing alot of uneaten food in the L226 tank/ pwrhead falling over and not working i decided to disturb the tank a little and look in all the caves only to find at least one male sitting on about 20-30 wrigglers wicked im stoked !!! would post some pics but im a bit hestiant to disturb them anymore than i have already will post what i can when i can in the future... so it can be done p.s fish boi sorry to hear of yr loss and i hesitate to put this on this thread but if any babies survive i promise if yr still keenyou can have first pick ...ok

well what a night , went to AFKA meeting last night just after doing a water change and talked to purplecatfish who was talking about his royals breeding came home tonite to find male royal fanning 30 or so eggs with two hungry kissing gouramis lurking behind ...fished them out (the kissers that is) thank god will let you know how they go thanks to ilah for the trio yeah ilah it is the original male you had with the two females that you had in yr discus tank ive recovered them to full health and they are obviously happy .. hope all goes well from here

i apparently have one "apparently because i have no reference i.e photo of what one should look like will try and post pic if it will sit still long enough but basically it looks alot like a snowspot ansistrus L182 but the spots are smaller its head is wider and body shape is flatter it is dark in colour and its tail fin has a white stripe at the end from tip to base both sexes have bristles but the female only has them around the mouth and not up the nose (best way to describe it )...im sure mine is a female and its in with a pair of L182 until i can find a male ...will try and post a pic like said with all three so you can see the difference but im sure that will start a whole debate in itself coz im not even sure which fish is of which L number yet to be sure

two things that might be happening and its only a guess as stated the wood from the beach might be slowly leaching toxins into the water ie heavy metals ..and yes this has happened to me once (think about all the pollutants in the ocean esp at shore line and imajine all that being absorbed like a sponge into the wood or something has gotten inside the wood or maybe the wood itself is toxic once found a beaut piece of driftwood stuck in the sand at low tide excellent holes and shape dug it out for like 1/2 an hour only to find the wood had been tanalised at some stage not to look at it you wouldnt have known except the part most buried gave it away (still had a red H4 mark )musta been there for years ...( secondly you havent stated and its prob nothing but is there a temperature fluctuation overnight ? how many heaters are you running and what wattage just a leaving thought it could be soley related to gouramis thou i dont know of any disease that is can you describe better the condition of the fish that are dying post mortem ? bloated /red areas/spots or anything like that and ...what was their behaviour like the night before ? like i said stabbing in the dark a bit without knowing more info

used to sell these alot and swordtails to lfs had very similair problems in fact dave a HFF told me once he bought from a breeder he would only stock that breeders guppies/swords in the one tank its not quite explainitory but it seems what others have been saying one guppie from adifferent lfs can wipe out a whole tank of existing ones went thru a phase of this as a breeder sold like twenty to thirty fish to an lfs only to be told a couple of days later 1/2 of them were dead dying or clamped fins and swimming odd replaced them with more only to have the same thing happpen then gave twenty more but put in a different tank and all were perfect so its a mystery why but does occur .Where you can only get from one breeder or from one lfs to try and minimise this risk BTW it only seems to be these two species of fish that are effected or so ive been told p.s it was definetly an expensive way to find out too i might add

awesome chilid7 they are awesome to watch and breed good luck raising that many yr gonna need a few tanks soon one would imajine lol -
you are right about dbl the recommended dose have dosed a tank before like this it dosent affect the plants in fact they thrive esp amazon swords it will turn the black hair algae (known as blk mans beard ) orange after about a week and then continue to kill it till its gone it dosent seem to destroy it completly as i have had it back in the same tank twice since then i have heard of ppl cleaning out the tank drying out the stones in the sun for a week and throwing all their plants only to get it back so this method is far easier the fish on the other hand well in my experience i lost two so if i could i would move them ...maybe others have had different results and maybe my fish died of other causes just bad timing but my amazon swords threw like three runners and went from 2 amazons to like twenty hope this helps

oh ok thanks for the tip havent tried them on mysis shrimp but i do have some was gonna try whole shrimp tied down with lead i thought they were more meat eaters than veggy but everyone seems to be feeding theirs veggies ?? guess its a combination ive been trying both so i guess im on the right track

ive bred these consistanly for years in a small tank i put large pebbles and some jarva moss introduce three fat females and 5-6 fit males leave them for 2'3 days and on the 4 day add a jug of water that has been chilled to about 2-3 degrees c this is the trigger where they come from what sets them off is snow metling in the hills which runs into the rivers they come from . the large pebbles stop the parents getting to the eggs Imo i always remove the parents after 2 days from then and i get a better hatch rate and survival i never syphon from the top as this is where they swim when they first start swimming ,and syphon using a small tube from midwater at the front of glass to watch for straglers add green water every day or have in direct sunlight to create green water or alternativly feed for a week on infusoria then fine powder or bbs till about 3/4 cm long also can feed them with daphnia at this stage but i have actually bred these last year in outside bath with green water and never fed them once started with 6 now have around 90-100

hey african what are you feeding yours at present and do they come out and eat or wait for nighttime ?
-
yeah yr pretty right on that the male have what can only be described as bristles down the lower half of the body (from tail to dorsal fin ) not always seen but seen easily when caught it pays not to catch them in a net for this reason as they can get tangled easy but it is done you can if yr game catch them with yr hand and these bristles are easily felt females exhibit none of these bristles or very few in comparison also females are usually rounder when viewed from above thats the two main differences that i know others may have more also the males should show larger ventral fins ..(the ones that fan) for that very reason fanning of eggs this is true with most!! and i say most plecos esp ansistrus but this is a panaque so it may vary with this type
