  1. dont forget ppl meeting this tuesday all new comers are welcome
  2. thats just wicked purplecatfish will give us alot to talk about at the next meeting of AFKA huh awesome news :bounce:
  3. nope yr right you havent ..and as i said i wasnt trying to wind anyone up or insult them ...its tap water by the way sub z but hey look what you are doing is adding thousands of chemicals to get rid of a few like chlorine which is like 1000ppm im telling you now i use tap water i dont even check the temp with a thermometer just with my fingers and i know wheather its close or not i water change around twice a week t about 25-30 % and use no chemicals ive started tanks added a little food waited a week checked ammonia which reads next to zip added like 4 little fish usually corys or plecos waited a week and added like 4-6 more and away i go the food after a week creates bacteria which cycles yr tank and the first two fish add the rest after two weeks the tank is fully cycled just watch after the first two days of introducing 4 or so fish that you dont get an ammonia spike and if you do then procede with a 50% water change no need for chemicals honestly and yep i water change discus, plecos, swords, angels , all sorts gouramis etc ive had them all and i never changed my ways i admit im more cautius around things like baby discus and rare pleco babies but only in the way i introduce the water ..very slowly and ill check the temp with a thermometer becaus ethey dont like change but ill say this i run 35 tanks and to do water changes i do it two ways first is a 24/7 water changer which drips in and thats straight from the cold tap outside !! the second is a hose connected to the sink and ive had 75oFwater straight from the tap running into 82oF tank and you know what by the time ive done a 25% water change ive changed the tank temp by about 1oC and better yet the usually spawn straight afterwards ...this is a natural process in nature rainfall contains no GH/cH and is usually 4oC colder at least.. not saying try it , but all those chemicals are doing as much harm as they are good just IMO
  4. i gotta say from my point if view and only my point of view complete and utter waste of time and money no trying to insult you but i have NEVER used cycle ,tap water conditioner ,prawns or anything else to cycle my tanks NEVER had cloudy water ,green water and NEVER had dead fish after introducing them there is a better way with less hassle and less money
  5. nope remove eggs without parents put airstone next to eggs to create water circulation over them if you move the parents too they are likely to eat the eggs out of stress ..they should breed about every 6 sixs sooner if conditioned well and have the right enviroment removing the eggs can trigger them to spawn sooner hope this helps
  6. personally id remove eggs add an airstone and meth blue they wont survive long in comm tank p.s when transfering them make sure eggs stay submersed in water at all times
  7. agreed had similiar problem with royal whipttails when i first got them power fed with courgette and shrimp pellets ..always food in the tank and after about a month they fattenend and spawned ... now still fat lesss feeding but you have to really have more than one piece in at a time and always have food available ..just increase water changes and watch ammonia levels thats all
  8. two words "that suxs " everything else has already been said
  9. thats awesome news blue hope all goes well yeah careful on the water changes and the feeding heaps of variety reckon theres at least 10- 15 when i think ive counted them all i find some more well hidden keep us posted on their progress i hope all goes well for you
  10. not sure that poor fella has four females in with him one week after i put him in i found him on the floor of the fish room i think he tried suicide when he found out how many where in his room with him thou hes settled in since (and ive dropped the water level a bit lol ..think that is two of the four females spawn
  11. for anyone who isnt quite sure what they look like or what to look for
  12. not the greatest shots but they have learnt the art of hiding from big bright light pretty quick so getting shots aint easy first one is between the pipes second one is hangin ten under log [/img
  13. just a little note not to complicate but if the water flow is lessened the unit will heat up and possible produce a burning smell is a water cooled unit much the same as a radiator try slowing the flow on that and see what noises and smells come out of yr car without correct flow there is no cool fluid continiously flowing between the impellor and the housing hence increased heat (friction ) and eventually a burning smell
  14. nope but try this link if you want more reasearch info http://filaman.ifm-geomar.de/summary/Sp ... N=24486620
  15. if the filter is cycled why would you need cycle to reestablish the tank? just put that filter back on to the new tank after cleaned and run it for a couple of days and test the water ... agree something is more likely poisoning the fish and the water whats the ph of the tank is there a dead fish in the filter somewhere dosent cycle add ammonia anyway ?
  16. nice shot of L200 hard to find these now anywhere good luck finding a mate
  17. well you could try shrimp pellets , a frozen tropical mix sold at lfs or make yr own (mix finely ground beef heart well trimmed with green veges and blend then freeze ) or a different flake , there is also frozen bloodworms/whiteworms , mysis shrimp does work if you rub the frozen block it breaks into smaller pieces .. live foods like daphnia and mossie larvae are scarce but still available .. there is even a cheap brine shrimp flake on the market in some lfs as for yr BN......DO NOT assume its fine with just pellets it needs variety like all the rest try courgette for a start you will even find the other fish pecking at it aswell
  18. depends on the fish to be honest can yu give us a rundown on what yr trying to feed
  19. sorry agree totally with both of you just this person originally posted a question on cory breeding and was told to set up a BB tank with airstone and box filter and THATS it FOR BREEDING .. i had assumed this is what he had done and so couldnt see the point in scraping the eggs of a perfectly designed breeding tank ..
  20. why did you scrape them off the glass? about three days at 76 degrees celcuis as soon as the yok sak dissapears ..baby brine shrimp until they can take shrimp pellets which about a month away feed heaps these things EAT! IMO next time just remove the parents and treat the tank with meth blue and heavy airation
  21. when you say farowella catfish there are many different sorts can you give us a more detailed name because there are http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/ge ... enus_id=80 all these to choose from try the link and it will give you a better idea and more info on the one yr after
  22. nice afrikan like to see how this develops ..
  23. mr pleco

    hey

    hey get some plecos!!!!lol
  24. just to add to that also whats the Ph of the aged water and where is it being collected from have both yr aged water and yr tap water tested for ph /ammonia/chlorine and mineral density you may find the aged water is from a well that is contaminated or a watertank that is getting contaminated from rust on the roof or a buildup of sludge at the bottom of the watertank could be an arial spray or anything pls post yr parameters as what may seem fine to you may tell us anotherstory and give us a better picture of events p.s just because the filter has good flow dosent mean it dosent need cleaning does the filter contain carbon at all ? and if so when was it replaced ? and how does she clean it if she has at all
  25. i always feed mine bbs and daphnia they can take crushed colourbits at this stage if yr in a fix for live food bloodworms is fine but mine developed flukes around the 30 day mark (put this down to the bloodworms ) also look on yr pack (i assume its frozen that yr feeding ) it will state 5% protien 90% water not much nutrition in bloodworms im afraid
