  11. We are lucky in NZ. Well, kindof. We don't have any native predatory creatures (barring the Falcon), and due to our seperation from the rest of the world, our creatures have grown to fill nieches. 1m long worms anyone.. heh... Unfortunately due to their uniqueness and removal from predators, everything has a very, very, very slow repoductive period I think the only poisionous "bug" we have natively is the Katipo spider.

  15. My dad has shares in some forestry down in.. somewhere... 25 year investment, and due to the changes in genetics, even shorter now before the trees are viable for milling... It'd be interesting to see how much carbon a tree soaks up compared to how much carbon is produced to harvest the things. - Anyone doing a science project currently? David - Good point.
  16. I heard something incredible yesterday. Forestry firms will have to pay up for carbon credits.. What in the name of heck? Any carbon they make cutting the trees down is going to be counter balanced by the trees surely..
  17. I'm a patroitic kiwi and proud of it Vinson, Don't suppose you were at Punakaike at high tide? 19. Ok, a bunch of photos from Tiritiri Matangi Island (http://www.tiritirimatangi.org.nz/) History: In Auckland's past was used as grazing for sheep & cattle, native forest mostly gone. Has been revegitated with mostly natives, and is now a bird and reptile sanctuary (I believe there are 6 Tuatara on the Island). Is "pest free", aka no Rodents, cats, mustelids, or Possums. 40 minute boat ride from Auckland. Takahe. Believed to be extinct until.. Uh.. Fairly recently. 3? breeding pairs on the island, two chicks and a lonely male... Takahe on the beach. Public landing is allowed. Whitehead with "lunch" Redcap Parakeet in Flax. Picture showing the revegetation. Notice the straight lines... I believe from the northen end of the island Saddleback Kokako
