  1. Click me This is awesome. I think the fish might be a bit big for some of the pipe but still a really cool idea.
  2. :bounce: WELCOME :bounce: Good to have another Dunedinite. Man that is a big tank.
  3. have you thought about if you would be wanting to get something better latter on in life as laptops are extremely difficult to upgrade. If you could handle a desktop then they are easier to upgrade in the end. I have used, serviced and bought heaps of laptops for the place that i work for and have never had a problem with Toshiba's. i own a dell myself but if i was going to every get another computer i would get a desktop as they can be upgraded.
  4. Well there are three down this way. The pet warehouse which is mentioned earlier, they are the most helpfull and friendly people and have a great selection. the don't always have a great deal of plant but sometimes you can get lucky. talk to Denise or the blonde guy, found them to be the most knowlegable. Then there is the Petplanet which does not have as bigger range but will have plants there most of the year. THe plants are not really named and some of the stuff do not know much about fish (which they will tell you about but they are more then happy to catch them for you), there are a couple of people that know about fish there. I think one of them is Simon (not sure of name), he is a taller guy with brown curly kinda hair. He has always been keen to help me out. Then there is the new place on the oneway street going north called Animal Attractions. They have a pretty good selection and have plants most of the time of the year but like the other place they are not named. The owners are really nice, they are learning about fish and are always keen to pick up tips and stuff from other fish people. They are getting a really big cichlid display tank up and running soon so it should be good. I would head off to the Pet Warehouse first then to Animal attractions then down to Pet Planet to have a look around. Whoa........... i think that covers what i know about the pet shops on Dunedin. P.S Please forgive the spelling, I am at work at 6:30am trying to organise stuff and i have not even had my first coffee yet
  5. I feed my fish these little critters all the time. The large angels love them and usually there are a few survivors but they do not last long. I feed my newts tyhe water boatmen as well and they love them.
  6. I had a baby possum when i was younger, he/she (not sure what sex) lived in my top draw of my dresser, only probelm was that since they are mostly nocturnal(sp) he/she would wake up when i was going to bed and want to explore my room. In the end we had to let it go, it is strange, i don't think i could have killed it now or back then since i helped it grow up. It used to love sleeping in my pocket when it was small, i ghuess it was his/her pouch. Great pet
  7. A .270 makes a nice mess of a possum. Strangley satisfing. I guess using a rifle that is meant to take down deer is a bit overkill.
  8. I shoot the buggers when i see they out rabbit shooting. Have not seen to many down this way recently. I know someone who used to hunt them for a living up in central but had a very bad accident featureing a tree and his groin area but we wont go into that.
  9. Brown trout can do really well in ponds as long as the pond is large enough. My dads cousin caught brown trout and put them in his pond, they are huge now. The pond was used to irrigate an orchard. Brown murky water. The trout loved it. You could feed them from the jetty.
  10. Large comets. We have a very large pond (bigger then our house) not sure of litres but we have heaps of goldfish and the biggest ones are just under 30cm in lenght. They seem to keep the bugs down.
  11. The look just like standard Irises that you would buy at the plant store. Why would they be banned?
  12. I am not sure i agree with the frogs or goldfish thing, I guess we must either be lucky or weird. We have a abundent number of frogs and a abundent number of very large comets in our pond and they seem to live happily together. I guess there are lots of factors that you have to look at, like the size of your pond, the size of the frog population and the size of your fish. Anyway, frogs rock and I am glas one survived.
  13. :bounce: WELCOME :bounce:
  14. They are little characters! Either sitting there waiting for fod to drop into there mouths or swimming around waiting for food to drop into there mouths.
  15. So i would like to thank everyone for there suggestions I have sorted there tank out and now am feeding in the water. They have taken to the water like ducks (hahahaha). I have been trying different foods, have stopped with the fruit flys cos they always seem to have wings and not wingless like they say on the pottle. I have been getting lots of little insects from my pond which they seem to love. i put about 20 small back strokers in the tank first up a couple of days ago and now there are only two big ones left. It is so cool seeing them in the water as you can now see ther bellies which is awesome. Off to catch more back strokers when i get home. Cheers everyone
  16. Not really wanting to get big ones. Just want to sort out a tank for littles one. Sorry guys
  17. They are going to be located to a pond once they get to the size that they can survive. If they grow out of there tank then i will just have to get a bigger one made.
  18. Right i am wanting to get a couple of RES that i can grow bigger to go into a pond in a couple of years. I have read heaps of stuff on the net, some more conflicting then others but most of it matches up. From all i have read i know that i need: - A proper light to provide the correct UVa and UVB levels - A light to provide heat for basking - A filter (canister) to filter twice/three times the water volume - Food - Calcium/vitamin blocks What i am not so sure about is the tank. I have a stand that i built for a three foot tank (the tank sadly meet a unfortunate end). I can build/get built another tank for this stand but i am unsure on what size is needed for two RES. I realise that bigger is better but i would like to use that stand if possible. I have a whole bunch of 6-7mm glass that i can use to make another tank but i need the size. I was thinking of extending the stand to accomodate a tank with the base size of 1000mmX500mm. This can be easily done but i am unsure what depth i would need. I have used the glass calculator and found that 400mm is really the max that i can go to. a few things that I need help with are: 1. Can i have a tank that is 500mm high but on fill it up to 350/400mm, would this still be like only have a tank 350/400mm high and filling it up to the top? 2. Could two RES happily live in this tank for a couple of years or should i go bigger still? If someone could shed some light on these questions that would be great. I want to do it right from day one so i thought i would plan first (not usually something i do ) Cheers everyone
  19. I have a couple, not sure of gender but i want to sell them. They have red eyes. Fully silver/white with shiney strips down the body.
  20. I am going to lower the temp if i can, it has been pretty hot down here recently and then will stop feeding, How long should i stop feeding for?
  21. Hey everyone out ther in fishy land. I have had two fire bellied newts for just over two years and they do not seem to have grown at all. They are housed in a tank by themselves with 2/3rds water and 1/3rd land. I never see them in the water and they seem very lethargic. They are feed on fruit flies and aphids when I can find them. Is there anyone out there that has experience with newts that could help me, suggest what could be done (if i have a problem that is). Any help would be great
  22. What size glass is it? This is pretty much what i want but 4 cm shorter on the width. Do you have bracing?

  24. I had a couple of these guys with my newts for a while, grew them up from tadpoles. The are the coolest things to watch hunt, they just sit and wait patiently then in less then a blink of the eye the fly was gone. Very cool to watch. They had to be shifted to my parents pond when they started to chirp all night long.
  25. Does the power bar (sounds like an energy bar) have an over heat function or a RCD cut out. If so then the power bar may have been taking a bit to much juice for its own good. It use to happen alot on my pc powerboard, i would plug to much into it and everything would shutdown cos the board had over heated.
