  1. You can use it but go for the thicker stuff. you can get 125 micron and 250 micron stuff from most hardwear stores. we have got a 1.5arce pond made from the stuff and had no problems with it at all.
  2. Welcome Looks like MTS has already set in
  3. I would go for a yoyo. I have apir in my tank and they are awesome to watch. I swear they think they are neons some of the time because they cruise around in the middle of the tank tryin to play with the other neons.
  4. Hey everyone. I have been thinking about a marine tank for a while but want to get a couple of books so i can learn about more of the ins and outs of setting a tank up and the dos and don'ts as well. Has anyone read a good book about marine setups that they would suggest to a newbie?
  5. I ended up getting two 20watt straight energy saver bulbs. I have them mounted and ready to go. I am going to install a small computer fan if the heat gets to be to much. It will plug straight into my computer as the tank is besides it at work. It will run as long as my computer is running and that has not been turned off for 43 days and counting. Not that it is going to cause any harm anyway. So the little tank is only 24l and it is losing about half a litre a day from evaporation. this will increase when the lights are on so more top ups with the water bottle (I do get some strange looks walking down the hall with four water bottles under my wings). Next comes some wood filler after the final fitting then it will be a lick of paint then some plants. Should be good
  6. Find out what kind of warrenty it has then take it back from where you bought it.
  7. That is a crazy video. The schools of plecs are huge. I have never seen some many plecs in one place before.
  8. Kuhlis are really nice to look at when they come out which is not very often. I would go for the Corys just because they are really cool to watch when they are in a group.
  9. That is a monster tank. I could quite happy with that i think. Not that my floor would hold it.
  10. It is pretty cool how they are able to adapt but not so cool that people have released them.
  11. I have two sets of light on two different timers. One set comes on at 7:30am and off at 7:30pm and another that coems on at 8:30am and off at 8:30pm. So i guess oyu could say i have two hours of half light and twelve of full light. Seems to work for me as i am trimming plant every other day now.
  12. awesome looking tank. I love the wood and the sand. It is going to give great contrast for the fish.
  13. I got them ordered through my LFS but you can also find them on the petplanet website. I bought the ballests from them as well. they are fantastic. Your LFS should be able to track them down for you or someone is selling them on trade me as well. Not the aquatic brand but a philips one i think.
  14. How long are the tubes? I recently did an upgrade on my tank from a single 20w t8 tube to four 24w t5's. There is a bit of a temp difference but the plastic on my tank seems to be holding out. The 24w tubes are about 550mm long and cost me about $24 each. the only problem that i have now is having to trim the plants as the poke there heads above water every week.
  15. Hey i am not sure where this is meant to go but if it is in the wrong please mod's just move it. So as the title suggests how much would it cost roughly to get a 4 foot tank made? I guess it would measure 48"x18"x18" or 1200x450x450mm. I know i can just call a place and find out but last time i called ( going back a year now) i got about four different prices. Any help with a cost would be great just so i know i am not going to get ripped off. Cheers everyone
  16. What would you suggest for a good starter plec?
  17. Would you look at the prices of some of the plecs

    Algae

Yeah the snails will work, slowly but surely. The won't last long if you have loaches. Cheap also
  19. I second that. Easier to clean and last a very long time
  20. The are fairly silent as well which is always a bonus. The run off 12v so another bonus
  21. Hey everyone one, i have a tank in my office that i though might be ok for a fighter set up. I though i would double check before i went out and sourced some nice looking ones. Also to breed them, what is the ratio of males to females. I know i only need one male but how many females would i need so they don't get harrased.
  22. I think that sounds about right. I think there are some on trademe selling for around about the same price. You can also get metal ones, not sure how they work but i guess the same principle.

    Algae

From what i understand about UV it will clear a waterborne algae bloom but will not clear the algae on your plants. (Correct me if i am wrong anyone). what are you running? e.g lights, c02,....... Do you have any algae eaters? I have a 90l planted tank which is running 4 x 24w T5 fluros and a diy c02 system and i am just keeping the algae at bay with two Otos. If you want to clean a tank pretty quick get a few small BN's. When they are small the love to eat algae in my opinion but when the get bigger the get a bit lazy. I had three when they were young the cleaned the tank nicely but when they got older the decided that they would rather eat the plants.
  24. Nice. It is amazing what a little privacy will do to a couple.
