  1. Well,I have 2 bags of sausages so it better not be... The BBQ kinda has a shelter so if some dear brave soul wants to man it (notice I said man, not women it) while the rest of us are inside we can still have bbqness!
  2. On the farm, Grandad would got to it at night & pour petrol down the hole then leave his coat over the top so the fumes (and wasps) wouldn't get out so they'd all be gassed. No need to burn.
  3. Gah, managed to mow 3/4 of the lawn before the mower gave up and I soon decided to follow its lead. With all the effort it takes to start the thing, might as well just have a push mower! *dies of excess physical exertion* And Caryl, you know how I feel about lines of smileys with no content.
  4. Hi Totally Tankers, don't forget our meeting is tomorrow
  5. Does it look like the one in this thread? http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=42936 Doesn't look normal to me. Donna has seen many an unhealthy turtle so maybe pm her just in case she misses this thread?
  6. I've never lived in a house with a joined on garage. And have spent hrmmm, 4-5 years in a sleepout. It's not so bad. Just invest in a pair of gumboots to run across the distance in when it's muddy. If you really love the house, can you get over it? Spend the 10s of thousands you'll save on a new aquarium
  7. You'd probably be pretty desperate too, if you hadn't got any nookie in 10 years. ps I know Mr Packhorse was probably just being territorial, but it's such a funny story to say he was desperately horny after 10 years of isolation.
  8. There was a male packhorse at Southern Encounter who'd been there since it opened. He was estimated to be about 40 years old. Anyway, he was the only one of his species they had until one day they obtained a female. He went crazy and wouldn't leave her alone - had to backed up into a crevice so she couldn't go anywhere. Crayfish mate just after moulting, so after a few months of being holed up, this happened. Afterwards, Mr Packhorse wouldn't have anything to do with her and just ignored her. Typical male! He was a great talking point at the aquarium and so many people commented on him and asked questions about him since he was so much bigger than the rock lobsters. A worthwhile asset to have at your park, LA.
  9. That's really interesting. I attended a seminar last year which included a studentship project involving the cataloguing of some of Canterbury Museums photos and matching up old Christchurch to modern Christchurch. One of the discussions that developed was all about the worry that in the future that opportunity to look at old photos will be lost as so many are not printed and only stored digitally. This is an interesting solution. I wonder how they'll be able to sustain the service. [edit] Ohhh I see, advertiser funded. It's a worthwhile project, I'd definitely look into using them... I'm one of those people who can never be bothered getting anything printed
  10. I'm a skeptic. Apparently Southern Encounter has ghosts though (it's in a very old building in the square) Old co-worker claimed she'd often hear footsteps inside when it was closed. And see things fly off the shelf randomly. She said if I ever got scared by the ghosts, feel free to go home & not worry about cashing up that night (since I'd be alone in the shop) But surprise surprise, nothing strange ever happened when I was there. I think the human mind invents things when it doesn't understand. eg How early humans didn't know how thunder was caused so invented a god/the supernatural to explain it.
  11. If its that bad report them to the SPCA? And Trademe. Seems like a bad idea to post it here (I don't know the official rules) but it would open a whole new can of worms.
  12. Brooklands (an importer) sends their fish through Post Haste & must send hundreds to all the pet stores they supply. http://www.petbus.co.nz/ is great, got my rats down from Blenheim through them. But they take about 5 days to do their entire route so wouldn't be any good for sending fish. Would be excellent for turtles and lizards though.
  13. Packhorses are apparently no good for eating btw. The crustacean and equine types that is.
  14. Really? Throat cut would be a pretty quick death, unlike burning to death in all the stomach acids. Imagine all the acids in your lungs (or gills). I'm no hippy, love meat and I suppose I don't pay much attention to how the animal is treated before death  ... But I can't stand the idea of torturing animals for entertainment. Things like bullfights make me feel sick, I remember having a discussion about it in university. I just couldn't believe that intelligent, educated people thought it was ok, because it was 'traditional' and stuff. They looked at me like I was a freak when I said it was barbaric. I guess eating a live oyster is still food and at least it tastes good, unlike this goldfish thing where it is being done purely for marketing and the entertainment of drunken morons.
  15. I'd love for you two & Pepper to join us! You can even meet my rats
  16. That's scary I'm far to scared to get any sort of expensive fish (Umm I think the most I've ever paid is only about $30) mainly out of fear I'd kill them myself, but this would be even worse. I always kinda worry about trademe pickups too, they might even be sussing out what electronics etc we have in our house... A friend left her car out on street, cos a potential buyer wanted to do a driveby to look at it... And the stereo got stolen... suspicious? Luckily flatmate or I are nearly always home so it's not often that the house is unattended.
  17. Keep us updated with photos! They are so cute, especially when that little. If they won't eat dead food, try live crabs from the beach. If they don't come out much, try keeping them in the dark with a red light, since they don't like direct light. Do make sure everything is secure, as others have mentioned, they are fantastic escape artists.
  18. Southern Encounter prob aren't keen on little ones - in the past they've had them & they've just hidden the whole time, so while very cool (& popular with the staff I'm sure.. he's sooooo cute!), there's not much point in having it on 'display'. They might be interested once he's bigger though.
  19. Our March meeting will be on Sat 6 March from 5pm onwards. We're having a bbq, but we have all the food & drink arranged. So instead of bringing something to share, please bring $5 per person to go towards the food. Non-members, new members & partners/family are welcome, as always. Hope to see you all there
  20. We have now confirmed the childrens prices. See the above postings for details. If you're unclear on anything feel free to pm myself or carznkats.
  21. Not leaving the house is fine with me  Sounds like my current life. What's this about no baths though?? Is showering acceptable?
  22. Cool looking porcupine fish. His spines look bigger than what I've seen before. Might just be the angle though.
