  1. Fish love the tannins, it's us who don't always like the effect. Soak it in the bath - I did this once for 3 weeks and I was not popular with the rest of the family. 47cm high is suitable for the type of plants you were talking about, with the lighting you have
  2. Definitely what they do. Does the sparkling gourami leave him alone? Is the tank big enough to hold a few small non nippy fish? I think they get bored and people reckon they get depressed.
  3. can you do a test in a tropical tank and see what happens?
  4. A little late but better than never I guess. I would go a second heater. A minimum of 1 watt per litre of water but better to go 1.5 per litre otherwise if your house is cold or crafty or the weather is particularly cold the heater you have will be on a lot of the time trying to keep up. If your tank is 60cm deep the T8 light will only penetrate to about half that depth. Also if it is 60cm then with the other measurements it holds around 300 litres. At 60cm deep you will need to go T5 lighting if you want anything other than mosses and ferns to grow. Some tetra will mixed school but a few groups larger than 2 will give a much better effect.
  5. I am not sure with the changes in club officers how many clubs are aware that on the right of this page -http://www.fnzas.org.nz - your club meetings information can be placed, as well as in this section. To ensure this happens it would be good if the person responsible for posting here would flick me an email as well. In the past our fed secretary was also web admin so did the changes herself and was aware of every notification being placed in the clubs section. I need to arrange for it to be done so please feel free to ask Adrienne
  6. it can also go here - http://www.fnzas.org.nz if a definitive decision is made re time and place and I know about it with enough time to arrange so.
  7. The cause of greenwater is 100% too much light. Other facts may not be helping it but the light is the issue. For the record as the quote linked to me was incorrect - I have never ever used algaefix and will never do so
  8. Thanks LA. I was sure I had been told they were from the same family but clearly not
  9. Are these the same family? I have googled but haven't found what I want.
  10. It is not a problem with this tank, it is the way it is designed. The post important thing to realise is that you will negate the warranty if you tamper with it in anyway. Why do you turn the power on and off?
  11. If it has a UV function then it should be a steriliser. UV bulbs don't last forever though so it may not work. What sort of filter is it?
  12. I have a fluval fx 5 but I rate the aqua one 2200 (I think it was) higher for turnover than the fx5. I have a sun sun 1400lph and its great. Fine filter wool will dramatically slow the flow and also if you use sintered glass and it gets clogged.
  13. The window being that close to the tank is what is causing the problem. If you can't move the tank then the best thing you can do is purchase a UV steriliser of a size suitable for the tank. It works by killing off the algae in the water as it passes through the sleeve of it. You could also put a dark backing on the tank as a certain amount of light will be reflecting off the back wall in to the tank as well however the only way to stop it is to remove the problem. More water changes won't stop it, all they are doing is removing the green and replacing it with clear clean water although I would recommend at least 30% water change weekly. The novo rift you feed is made partially up with a blue green algae. Be sure you are not over feeding. What is the nitrate reading?
  14. Hi Where does the tank sit in your house in relation to windows, over head skylights, lighting. How often do you water change and how much. Green water, which is what you have, is caused by too much sunlight light getting in to the tank either directly or indirectly.
  15. From what I found when mine did it, it was cheaper to get a new one made than have it resealed (the quote for both was with the same tank maker)
  16. I saw a 10cm aro do it once. Unfortunately it landed head first on the ground. Putting it directly in the path of the airline revived it but then it appeared to have been blinded as swam in small circles and bumped into the sides of the tank. Later that day it seemed just fine, swimming around, eating etc but it deteriorated overnight and died. Clearly a major head injury.

    Green Algae

As said Cyano is a bacteria and normally forms in places where there is virtually no water movement. There are treatments available to get rid of it but regular (at least once weekly 30% water changes) combined with good vacuuming to remove it all each time should reduce it a lot. Increase the water flow in the tank. It is a green/blue algae and forms like a sheet of gladwrap on the surfaces. Treatments which work are cleaning as above furan 2 (available from lfs) erythromycin (script only from a vet), it is an antibiotic so can mess with your filter bacteria and there is also a green-blue algae remover available from HFF (Mt Roskill) and probably other shops, targeted specifically at cyanobacteria but the actual name eludes me at the moment.
  18. They do. Just add their names to the form you have already sent me and email it and make the deposit. When it gets to mid April clubs generally hold off capitating new members until the next financial year. If AFA decides to do that please let the new member know. This year I had a couple from two different clubs who joined in March asking why they werent able to access members areas and why they didn't get the link. Capitations should close off 10 July but like this year a small extension is given
  19. Just letting the members of the following clubs know that your membership cards for 2013-14 have been, today, mailed to your club secretary for distribution - Auckland Fishkeepers Association Bay Fish & Reptile Club Kapi Mana Aquarium Club Marlborough Aquarium Club Tasman Aquarium Club
  20. Topheus are very susceptible to bloat unless feed the right sort of cichlid food. Where are you located and how big is your tank?
  21. I wouldn't worry about noodles but you might have to direct the spray bar back towards the glass. Those internal filters normally have a very strong output.
  22. Not all the rainbow lorikeets - we still have some visit!
  23. Black Lined flying fox = Siamese Algae Eater = Crossocheilus siamensis Flying Fox = Epalzeorhynchos kalopterus Both have been the country and are easily confused. The Black Lined Flying Fox - the real algae eater has a black line that extends the length of the body and through the tail. This is a member of the shark family and therefore is semi aggressive, fast and likes lots of space. It should not be kept in a tank with a red tailed shark.
