  1. Very nice. What is the tall long leafed plant?
  2. Will you allow visitors? If I am over my jet lag I would be keen or should I have been to the first talk before hand?
  3. What temperature does your house get down to at night. I am surprised your heater runs all the time, mine doesn't and the lights during the day heat the tank as well. Run out of hot water because you use it doing water changes or because of another reason. Maybe your hot water cylinder is faulty. You could use cold water for the changes, it's unlikely to drop the temp a lot less they are massive.

    Soon...

:rotf: Happens up here lots as well!
  5. A huge thank you to the following clubs for sending your Capitations through - Marlborough Aquarium Club. Hawkes Bay Aquarium Society. Bay Fish and Reptiles. Wellington Aquarium and Watergarden Society. South Auckland Aquarium and Watergardens Society. Receipts will be mailed out on Monday.
  6. I took the word figher a meaning there was a fighter in there and it does appear there is!
  7. Lol, that has happened to me many times.
  8. I also would not count the fighter out as being the culprit.
  9. I would make the effort and check. Might be hiding or might be dead and rotting. Male betta and male guppies do not always get along so if there is trouble he may be hiding.
  10. I like it as it is without spots, very nice!
  11. If it died yes it could have been eaten but not only by the betta. more likely wedged under something or sucked up the filter. You sure it hasn't jumped out the tank?
  12. Yes we did. I bred them successfully but have to seen any around for a while.
  13. I bred giant beta females last year, a result of careful And selected breeding, using various giant males and females from previous spawns. They are a beautiful fish but there was little interest from people in them. Giants are harder to pawn from, only 1 in 3 males will successfully reproduce and fry required way more feeding and better water conditions than normal fighter fry.
  14. Yes orchid is a color only, I would be interested to find out if people are just referring to the black fighters that come in periodically under that name and can be a range of tail types, or if it is something else that I am not aware of.
  15. This thread has gotten way off track. Can we take it from here and continue with questions and answers. I was really interested in this as am thinking of trying to breed some good guppies!
  16. Sounding good! Just waiting or your next post
  17. I suspect they were/are under the leaf. Unless you have seen them before you will struggle to see newly hatched fry unless you have some sort of magnifier. If the male is still there leave he tank as It is for a few days and watch the males behavior. He will dart around scooping up the fry that detach and put them back. If you dont see any of that going on then there is probably nothing there.
  18. Could be several reasons but first a few questions - did you remove the female? Where was the male when you discovered the eggs and nest gone? Are you sure they had not hatched? If the eggs are not fertile the male will eat them Occasionally you will get a male who is an Egg Eater ie will always eat the eggs. Try again and see what happens
  19. Pleased to hear. Ryan's two are neat kids and would certainly distract you. but those two older males showing restraint - I can not imagine :digH:
  20. May I suggest that seeing as you are in Christchurch you factor the earthquakes into your build, both with tank strength and stand bracing. I would hate for you to get everything up and running only to have it all come down again.
  21. Palmers or Kings Garden Centres often have them in.
  22. I hope you didn't drink so much that you are incapable of reading this for a couple of days. I know how you feel having had to put our much loved golden retreiver down on 4 January. She went down hill so fast we only had two hours warning. Even now it still brings tears to my eyes. You did your best for him, right to the end. Time is a great healer they say, so take it one day at a time.
  23. Sorry for the slow reply, my night is pretty much your day currently. I don't know the solution to the lighting and I am not technically minded enough to be able to have successfully worked it out yet. I can get saggitaria micro folia to grow but it stays short, short for even a dwarf sag. You could Plant it out with plants that are better in lower light for the bottom areas of your tank or you will eventually have to look at halogen or similar lights in the long run. However, my suggestion is to start off with what you understand, as you are, and build on it from there.
  24. This sounds great and when I get back to NZ I would love to come and see it sometime My 450 litre tank is 60cm deep and the T5HO - I have two double units so 4 bulbs all - up does not get through the depth sufficiently to do encourage growth on the high light loving carpet plants although they do grow very slowly. For heaters I have 2 300 watts, one is a back up and is set at a slightly lower temp. With the amount of heat the lights put out and Aucklands climate they rarely come on, and just about never come on together. My bigger issue is in summer when the tank easily makes 32 degrees C. I run an fx5 on my tank and I do get a few dead spots with the wood and plants blocking the flow. When I return home in a few weeks I will most likely add a second filter.
  25. Worms will be planarian, normally caused by over feeding. They are harmless but cut the amount you are feeding down and the fish should eat the worms. The fighter may have tail rot. Look at the tail carefully and see if you can see any red streaks in it. If you can then is it bacterial and You will need Medication from the local fish shop to treat it. Isolate him, even a 2 litre ice cream container floated in the top of the tank will do. Fill with clean treated water and change twice daily. If it has been caused by the neons nipping at it and is at the early stage it will clear up and grow back in a few weeks. Your neon, no idea but they are fairly good at dropping dead, ime anyway.
