  1. Replicate the trough. Dont worry about filtration. Just do small water changes once a week or fortnight. You will require light to promote algae growth as thats what alot of critters eat. If the water if too clean the bugs wont survive. I have heaps of bug jugs around the house. Mossies, daphnia, bloodworms, blackworms. All are unfiltered, just the blackworms have a bubble to airate the water. HTH
  2. Temperature regulation will bet the hardest in a tank that size. You need plenty of dissolved Oxygen so will need plenty of surface movement. The bigger the tank the better.
  3. Whack him in his sleep. LOL HA HA HA Welcome to the forum Pixiedust. Hope you enjoy it here
  4. I feed mine Whiteworms, Live and frozen bloodworms,Live Daphnia, Live Mossies, Live Blackworms, Tetrabits, Tetracrisps. I try to give them as varied diet as possible.
  5. This was on the front page of our paper. Not good http://www.wanganuichronicle.co.nz/loca ... s/3933045/ The river is very clean, the cleanest I have seen it for a long long time. The lack of rain means there is very little runoff to add silt to the water. Some of the small tributaries have gone dry already. This never normally happens until late summer.
  6. Sounds like you have Daphnia, Copepods and Rotifers. All good fish food. The critters in the water will be dining on algae and bacterial growth. If they are surviving then the water is reasonably clean. The only thing that could make them bad is if there is some parasite or disease present in the water they come from. The adding of manure to water will seed the water of bacteria and algal blooms. Where is this trough? on a farm or is it somewhere populated?
  7. Image how I feel in Gumboots, with buckets nets and camera. I frequent roadside streams and ditches around Wanganui. I'm sure some people must see me and think "there goes that crazy guy again" lol I agree with above. Seed a bucket and feed from that. I personally do feed daphnia straight from source but that is entirely up to you.
  8. Its a Potomogeton species, Pretty sure its Potamogeton distinctus. Its the only place I have seen this plant. Its quite amazing the difference in aquatic plants in these ponds. They are all in the same area yet they vary so much. There were also lots of massive tadpoles, I mean massive, never seen any that big before.
  9. Today I went for a bit of a walk through a local forest. Took a few photos and thought I should share them with you guys. Hope you like them And in B&W All comment appreciated.
  10. Looks like a Echinodorus cordifolia to me, but Im no sword expert. I strongly suggest you change the background and see what you think.
  11. Nope, You just added a whole substrate full of nutrients. Its the nutrients that feed algae. Your tank will go through a cycle also as a lot of nitrifying bacteria will reside in gravel. So basically it is a whole new set up its just that the filter is already seeded. It just needs to cycle. So keep up your water changes. It will help with both algae and the cycle.
  12. Here is what I would do. Leave the plants as they are. Get rid of that printed background and replace it with black. In my opinion the addition of too much more to the tank will crowd it. The filter is more likely to damage or make plants grow on odd ways due to flow. Black background will bring out the colours better and not make the tank look too busy. It will also help hide the filter. That's just my opinion though. If you are intent on planting something there then maybe a red plant like Rotala or Macrandra if lighting permits.
  13. Thats pretty much a new tank environment. I agree with Sam. It will go eventually. BN's also love the brown Algae. How did you manage to add Daltons Aquatic mix without rebuilding the whole tank? You must of had to remove all water? It is very rich in nutrient and will be a nightmare forever if you allow it access to the water column.
  14. I am keen to swap the retro for another type of crypt if you are keen?
  15. Not fancy, but some photos. http://www.facebook.com/#!/album.php?ai ... 4731184517
  16. Do these people not realise that no matter how much water you take, eventually it will end up back in the ocean. Kinda bizzare really that they would be concerned at taking NSW. I understand if large quantities were being piped from an estuary but from the sea?
  17. I put my hand up for Hydrocotyle as well.
  18. http://maps.google.co.nz/?ie=UTF8&ll=-3 ... 53637&z=13 We are by the sea. We have a world class beach too
  19. I went out and took these tonight. The first is looking toward the sunset. Once sun went down I turned around and took the second image looking upriver to Wanganui port. Men fishing Looking upriver
  20. Central fish keepers are holding a Palmerston North tank Crawl. Anyone who wishes to be part of this or tag along and see what the club is all about is welcome. The crawl will be followed by a late lunch. PM phoenix44, sandysme or myself for any further info. Updates will be added via our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/pag ... 4731184517
