  1. They have an awesome black and blue crowntail at birdbarn :nfs: !drool:
  2. fair comments I dont like the idea of drilling my tanks because if they crack, its a wasted tank. Also the two ways that i've seen them drilled- From the bottom- with a pipe coming up through the tank setting the water height, means i need to drill holes in the shelves also under the tank for the pipe to drain From the side- has to be the correct water height. So I sorta steered away from that idea because of the possible cracked tanks and also, once its drilled, it cant be filled if the tank needs to run on its own. I opted for the overflow option as it doesn't need any work done to the tank and to isolate the tank i'd just need to remove the overflows. Overflows will be going from tank to tank across each shelf to a common sump tank with UV filter and then a pump to push the water back up to the top of the shelves. I agree that the pipes would be easier, I just opted for the look I have because it looks clean etc, you can easily see through it etc. got the idea from here If there was a power outage or something, the idea is that the overflows would settle the water at the same heaight in all tanks as the water is not being sucked from the tank, its being pushed out by however much water is entering the tank. If a pump was to fail, there would be no water entering the first tank. The last tank will overflow into the sump, and stop overflowing at the set height. Thats the idea in theory anyway. Liking the different ideas and input as it really gets me thinking about my options. Thanks heaps and please keep them coming, nothing is set in concrete yet. Aaron
  3. Opaque white is a solid white as opposed to cellophane which is see through. Opaque just means thats its not transparent. Dragon can be described as metallic scales on the body and head. (meaning not all dragons are white like the ones being sold at the moment) Your female colouring is cambodian (red fins and pink body) unfortunately this gene is pretty dominant so most of the offspring will be this colour. Your best bet would be to find an opaque white female to start a 'pure strain' Hope this helps
  4. Ok, so next step on the agenda was designing and making overflow boxes for the tanks so i can run them through a central filtration system. I will be running sponge filters in each tank, but over filtering wont hurt, lol. So I knocked one up this arvo to suss out a pattern to be cut from acrylic. I'm hoping this will work.
  5. Thanks for the replies. Had had a quick look around mitre 10 on the way home from work but couldnt see anything. (was a 'quick' look lol) Have found the ones on trademe, didnt realise they offer services on there nowdays
  6. does anyone know of a place to buy inexpensive sheets of 3 or 4mm acrylic? Even if its offcut size? I am after about 30 pieces 100mm x 100mm for a little project.
  7. Primo now :slfg: Thanks for helping out
  8. Has been a while. Been missing fish so much! However I hadnt stopped looking at the LFS stocks and seeing what new fish have been coming thru
  9. Hi Adrienne, took about 4 weeks to heal up and come right. So fully functional now. Just been moving around Auckland too often lately and havent settled down anywhere but I'm living with my brother at the moment while I find my own place and he happens to have a large basement I can have tanks in
  10. Right, so after deciding to seriously get back into the hobby, i've started constructing a new breeding setup to hold 15 tanks. Scored some pellet racking from work after moving factories and combining with 2 other print companies  so i thought they'd make a great new stand. Only problem is that my old tanks are a little too small to fill the shelves. (will have to upgrade again later ) So my first of many questions is: knowing its easier to hold temperature in a larger volume of water, would it be better to insulate each tank with poly (including underneath, not shown in the pic) or to have the tanks all touching each other to share the warmth?
  11. Hi all, back again after a long break from the hobby. Been a couple of years away from fishkeeping due to different living situations etc and my hand is back to 100% which was the initial reason for giving it up. I'm currently constructing a new breeding setup to hold 15 tanks as my old shelving is in storage still which held 27 tanks, so its a bit excessive at the moment. Hoping to get back in touch with old friends and breeders alike, aswell as new ones I haven't met yet. Current 'inside' tanks- AR380 Stocklist- 3 male albino guppies 2 female guppies 1 blue female platy 1 normal bristlenose 1 longfin brislenose 30x30x60 Stocklist- 2 pairs pure halfblack guppies 2 halfblack fry Aaron
  12. OSH had a field day. The printing press I was using had hardly any safety features on it because it's old. It now has new guards etc to make them happy. For those that see the pics, you could literally open my palm up fully and see the muscles, tendons and some bone. (am i sick to find it interesting? :-? ) Waiting for the surgeon to email me those pics though.
  13. no broken bones or ligaments The damage was done my me pulling it out of the machine, but I would prefer that over getting dragged further in. Press was running at 200 metres per minute so it was over in a second or two. Had carpal tunnel done though coz of the swelling
  14. Thanks for the kind words everyone "imsweet" - I dont like shoes without socks. (also have to take care of my feet coz it looks like they want to take a skin graft from there to replace a part of my palm) I dont own any trackies, only have dickies shorts and trousers, jeans and denim shorts. And shoes, some I can slip on without worrying about laces, but others I have to ask someone to tie for me. "Wok" - are you offering to clean 20 tanks for me "Sharkie" - Been on antibiotics till today, so no drinking for me. "Phoenix44" - 6-8 weeks of healing and a couple of months of hand therapy to get it close to how it was before. Went to the clinic today and saw it for the first time in a week, it doesn't look too bad considering. Could have been worse, so I think I got away lightly. Was amazed about how much movement and strength lost already. Have to start with simple excercises like touching my thumb to my fingertips, (cant touch my little finger or ring fingertips yet) spreading my hand out flat and trying to make a fist etc. Lots of massaging to stop my hand from closing. Anyway, some photos are on my photobucket if anyone wants to look. (kids, ask your parents first   ) http://s99.photobucket.com/albums/l282/Aaron-Betta/
  15. I really hate monday mornings, they ruin my weekends! I happened to be printing the back of warehouse reciepts so I had "money back guarantee" printed on my hand which we all had a chuckle about. Still havn't figured out how to: Put socks on with one hand Do the top button or clip up on trousers Tie shoelaces one handed And thas just getting dressed in the morning, lol. Going to the plastic surgury clinic tomorrow to see if my palm is still alive or if i'll have to get a skin graft off my thigh. Fingers crossed. (on one hand  )
  16. I have only been at my new job for 4 weeks and already I'm having a holiday. I wasn't concentrating last monday morning (was literally waiting for the jug to boil for my morning coffee) and my printing press tried eating my hand. Ended up partially de-gloving my hand (peeled the skin and meat off my palm). Yes I have pics because apparantly I'm sick. Of course it had to be my right hand because I'm right handed, so being a lefty now is frustrating. Even using the computer is harder. I had to pass on most of my fish and shut down the tanks again for a while as I can't do maintenance and clean them properly
  17. There are 2 dwarf puffers and a small BN and 3 baby swords.
  18. Aren't they mainly carnivourous? (from what I have read on the net) I will try it on some courgette. Yes there is driftwood in the tank for it.
  19. My sunshine plec has lost a lot of colour over the past few weeks and I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I have done a 30% waterchange I have increased the thermostat temp to 28 from 24 degrees Cleaned filter to optimise output flow of water Aimed the output to help aerate the water better (not all at once of course) It lives on shrimp pellets and the occasional bloodwroms and algae wafers. It has been staying in one spot for the most of the last two days, nothing seems to bother it including a young BN wriggling around it.
  20. No guff sheet that comes with it. Only thing it says on it worth mentioning is that it "eliminates ammonia and nitrite toxicity... instantly" Instructions: First condition water with standard dechorinator, add startsmart, aerate then add fish immediately.
  21. I have always cycled my tanks naturally, except if I was in a rush to establish some I would use "cycle" to add beneficial bacteria especially if I dont have an established filter to spare. I wasn't aware of these miracle cyclers that cycle overnight. (no, I still wont be using them) I was more curious about if they actually worked and how they effected the water chemistry, both short term and long term.
