Thanks everyone. adodge - yeah I have had them spawn before but wasn't set up to look after the fry so nature took its course last time. They are actually in a really big tank so there is enough room for 2 males to have nest territories and alot of plant hiding room for the female. As far as I knew the boys were being good dad';s looking after their nests miles away from where the female hung out. Oh well next time, and there will be a next time because I really like dwarf gouramis they have such neat personalities, I will make sure I have 2 or more females.
-
Have 2 x male dwarf gourami. and had 1 x female. they had been egg laying furiously when in the cichlid tank. I move them to a tank of their own, and they hadn't been doing anything.....until 2 days ago. Bubble nests in both corners of the tank. Then this morning I find my poor wee female dead, still full of eggs I think. I carefully removed the bubble nests and put them into a fry tank. I have some fry, but I'm still bummed about the female dying. If anyone has some females they want to sell please let me know. Hope I manage to keep these fry alive!

No bath outside......wish I did have one though.

The new house I have moved to is incredibly warm, so all 5 of my tropical tanks are without heaters. The gold fish tank is also without heater... I was going to go into natives after talking to Stella, but there is no way I would be able to do that now because I wouldnb't be able to keep the water temp down.

I was guessing for some of them will be hiding, both pics have diffent numbers

I;ll go with 17 cause I like that number

WOW. I suppose when building a house (like they were from the looks of things) the cost of an aquarium that large wouldn't be noticable. I think I would have used darker substrate. Snails and real plants I have never been able to have both..its either one or the other. I liked: the floating plant (does anyone know what it was?) the balls of green stuff (didn't catch what they were either) the rock decorative backing Alot of the photos wouldn't show, and thanks to whoever it was that put the link for the google translate..made things much easier

Had a gold severum bout 9 years ago who had ugly HTH ulcer like thing. Treated it with liquid betadine. Took fish out of the water, dabbed the stuff on then back into the water. I didn't think it would do much because going back into the water wouldhave washed most of it off, but it cleaned it up and the fish lived on

I have the same thing in my small tank, just little one that dont' get bigger than 3mm. I have gone to the extent of stripping everything and giving it a good soak in bleach.....was snail-less for about a month and then they reappeared. If they could survive the bleaching I decided that there will be nothing that will get rid of them. I had loaches in there for a while, they got very fat and had to be moved out to the biger tank. goodluck in finding a solution

Hi, I think you would be surprised at the amount of people in good ol Taumarunui who are keeping fish. I have just moved from there, and in my time of living there passed on MTS to many of my friends and associates. Talk to Teresa at KC Vets and Angela at TMN vets and they will be able to tell you they regulars. PS: if you have anymore blue rams for sale in the future can you please pm me I'd be really keen on buying some. Cheers

I bought 3 of these filters - they are bloody great !

The GT and kribs have grown up togehter from 2cm, they about 5years old. The GT hasn't really grown much, female whose mate died after their first spawning which bummed me out. Have heaps of hiding place and cover for kribs that GT can't get into, but somehow she managed it. Naughty GT, she's a real character.
-
Well I don't know... I left my tank for 2 nights to return to 4 less fish and the tail of one of the large kribs hanging out the mouth of my GT. Lights on timers, and they have had 3 days of fasting before with no fatalities./ I think GT knew I was away and just decided to reak(sp?) havoc... she just didn't expect me to come home when I did. I reckon find a local school kid and get them to keep an eye on things...whyat about your neighbours?

Heres a site I found when my lot were going at it...had some interesting bits. http://www.gourami-breeding.co.uk/

I'm moving from Taumarunui to KatiKati next weekend which is about 270kms. I have 3 x 300L tanks to move....I am dreading it. Just as long as my house is packed up I can spend the last night dismantling the tanks. Fish are going to be living / travelling in chilly bins. Now that some of the cichlids are bigger I am going to need more chilly bins. I wont be doing another move anytime soon! Good luck with your move.

I'm not sure. My males whose nests weren't used, kept defending them even though they were breaking apart.
-
Let em breed I say! I had 3 males with nests in one of my community tanks. I found the easiest way was to lift a container up from underneath the bubble nest. The first time I did it too early and the nest fell apart becsue I didn't include the male to keep adding bubbles. 2nd time I had fry, but lost em. Since I have moved the gourami into a asian species tank they have not built a nest. About the inbreeding - what I think, if you have healthy strong fish then offspring may not have any inbreed illness/defects.

Geezus I'm a git! Have just pulled out tapemeasure and they aren't 20cm, more like 15cm. I have gold severums, but looking to get some of the other colours as well. No pics because I dropped my camera and the blardy thing wont focus properly and I am crap at manual focus and capturing image in time. One has cool cheek colouring which the other doesn't, and the one without has more colour in fins.
-
Not keen on them at all because I as some others have said 'wanting one creates the need to keep creating them'. Although I think they look really peculiar and quirky that wouldn't be enough for me to get one. I also agree with others that Severums are fantastic. Have had them in the past with Oscars, they died from old age I suspect - had them for a long time. Recently got anther pair who have gone from 5cm to 20cm in just under 3 months.

I'm moving 3hrs across the country (suppose it isn't that far). I have just sold one tank to a friend but will be moving 3 x 200+L tanks in a couple of weeks. I know it isn't many, but I;m moving the house all by myself and it is going to be a buggar. I have had the fish living in a massive plastic rubbish bin before, for a couple of months while insurance paid out on the broken tank, so will probably just invest on another couple of rubbish bins and transprt in the initial move. I don't know how some of you with MTS cope, especially when relocation is required.

What is your favourite plant in a community fish tank? Why?
becc4 replied to 4sticks's topic in Freshwater
Yup Indian fern - mines gone mental! I also like Java moss. Can't really get many plants going in my tank because the blinkin severums keep munching them so they look really tatty -
THere is also the process for making a desirable Wakin goldfish. I don't think that I would buy any fish that has been modified through cruel means

I agree with Fishboi. Fluvals are great, but Aquaone are cheaper and run really well too. I have an Aqua one's on each of my 250L tanks and a Fluval on my 350l tank. All run quietly.
