  1. Hi everyone. I have somehow got GBA in one of my smaller tanks. Does anyone have a magic way to get rid of it? Any advice would be appreciated.
  2. yep fast growers. Good breeders too. Lost (female beat up and killed) my male after they had first spawn. Stil have my girl shes almost 10 years now.
  3. ask aquanut about his set up
  4. SEVERUMS!!! They are great with Oscars and will add some colour in there. Oscars are cool fsh, they are so expressive and great pets. I have seen a tank with large oscars x 3, severums x 2, jack dempsey, Pleco and one other large cichlid which I can't recall name...and the tank looked magnificent.

    Cockatoo Fry

No pics sorry my camera doesn't focus so well after I dropped it. Can't really see much at the moment because the mother has the fry tucked up in the roof of her cave, and the month+ fry scoot off when they see someone coming.

    Cockatoo Fry

Well, I still have around 20 - hatched over a month ago. They vary in size greatly some still only 5mm and a few double the size, I guess that is normal. I started up the bbs hatchery but got paranoid that the salt water was leaching into the tank water so poulled it out. THey are happily feeding on tank growth and finely crushed flake. The female has been at it again and has another 40 or so wrigglers under her piece of wood......shes a great mother so I'm going to leave these ones with her to see what happens
  7. yep i reckon loaches. I'm having a right ol time at the moment trying to net some Skunk loaches. I get one, then the rest duck into gravel pits they have dug. Yoyo loaches were bad too.
  8. I agree with Ianab, hard to find trucking firms who will take tanks...long weekend coming up in a couple of months that would be a perfect time to take a trip down. Or book rail now get the cheap seats and rent a van back??
  9. Ok have removed the mother, she is back in the main planted tank with the 2 boys and other female. She's not too happy, still bright yellow racing around the tank, I suppose looking for her babies. Ooooh just watching them now, they are doing a bit of dancing together I have a brine shrimp hatchery in with the fry, will see how they go. I;m so excited I have never had fry get this far.
  10. Bought these ones off trade me from discus dude phil. I'm not sure what strain, the big honcho male has the orange colouring on all his finage. He looked spectular fins all blazing and body went almost black - when he was staking out his territory. Got 3 males out of 5. One male has died, the one that fertilised the eggs that have hatched - the female really took chunks out of him. Anyhoo, I will see how I get on with this first batch of fry. Will def have some to trade (fingers crossed I get these ones through the next couple of months).
  11. Thanks, the mother seems to be looking after them really well... but as you say she's done her job, and there are no other predators so the fry should be okay with out her. I might do some rearragning tonight. THanks again for your thoughts
  12. Hi all. I finally have some dwarf cockatoo fry. They are approximately 1 week old, female is swimming them around the tank grazing. THey are in a bare bottm tank by themselves so no other predators. How long should i lave the mum in there for? I'm worried that she'll do what my rams did and get bored or anxious and eat em. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  13. if you looking down on the fish it looks like an S head turned to the side the body twisted then the tail the opposite direction to the head
  14. Yeah Rozski both males have ended up S shaped, but only after they had never fully recovered from the Ram's beating. All other fish (dwarf cockatoos, and siamese fighter) in the tank are fine. I think the last male is on his way out..
  15. I had 2 males and 1 female. The lived happily for many months, and even had several goes at breeding (unsucessful because i was not set up to handle such small fry). Anyway female died after mating a 3rd time. The 2 males lived in harmony for another 6 months. They were in a tank with a breeding pair of Rams who attacked them resulting in minor damage. Hospital tanked them, they recovered but not fully. Only one male now and he has become 's' shaped. They are great fish and I think they have to go through really bad circumstances to get sick like mine did....lesson learned that even dwarf cichlids aren't nice to house them with when theres breeding going on. I would definately recommend them! Yep and look at the ones on trademe like Alan suggested. You will have more luck finding a female as the lfs don't get females in as their colouring is not as nice and males. Good to have a female with male so the male colours up. But in saying that 2 males are ok togehter - well mine were.
  16. thanks lduncan, what a bummer, the house looked lke it was going to spectatulr.
  17. I did that once and it was enough to place stress on the glass, and when i moved the tank back into original position it split. I wouldn't risk it, especially with new carpet going down, its a hassle emptying out a tank, but I'd much rather spend the time doing that, than mopping up a couple of hundred litres of water. But then again, I could have been careless and had some sort of torque type movement happen.
  18. why couldn't i see the pics at photobucket? I'm a real pleb when it comes to things like that, can someone please give me some directions. i really want to see how the house turned out. Ta
  19. I have a large gold fish tank sitting beside a tropical tank of the same size. There is little heat transfer with the golfish tank sitting at 22 degrees. I have in there some koi swords. I am thinking of getting some more because they are diong really well. I might look at a BN too help keep the tank algae at bay.
  20. THanks African, that is what I thought, my clowns are really cruisy I don't want to stress them out. Might starting thinking bout moving on the hora's....
  21. Thanks guys n gals. At present they are only 1.5cm...but killed a few guppies - stupid me for leaving the guppies in there. I have a tank with large cichlids which I can put them in once they are now longer bite sized, only thing is I have some lovely clown loaches in that tank. I would hate to add the Hora's in there and my clowns suffer. Does anyone have experience with clowns n horas?

    dwarf cockatoos

Bought 5 a couple of months back and they have been going well. Couple of them laid eggs the other night, they were gone the next morning, however I am stoked that I have a pair in there, I think I may have 2 pair. The males are starting to colour up well. Yippeee :bounce:
  23. Does anyone here have any experience with these fellas? I have purchased some and they are dynamite at fin nipping. i am wonder which tank to put them in. What are suitable tank mates for them? Cheers

    Dying guppies

Hmmm its a pain in the rectal! I have pulled all guppy who are showing signs, or are looking suspect out of the tank and got them in isolation. When this first started happening it was effecting fish who had grown to mature size, now I have fry dying off from it. Just when i had started getting some really groovey looking fish!
