  1. what filter are you running?
  2. yeah i keep them in a net and feed a lot to start with so if there is no flow then the water can go nasty if its not turning over
  3. i regularly set up a "new tank" when i need to house fry, it's 300L and this is how i do it. 1) I take substrate from the existing tank and put it in the new tank. Enough to cover most of the bottom. 2) I then use water taken out of the existing tank to part fill the new tank, maybe 1/3 of the new tank. 3) add the heater, air and new canister filter. 4) fill new tank to level desired and add fish as long as temp is somewhere near what it should be. Maybe fill it over a few days. 5) do a 25% water change 3 days later just to be cautious. This works for me very well and has not posed an issue in the dozen or more times i have done it this way without using an existing filter, with an existing filter you'll be fine. I think the key is the substrate, it must hold some or a good amount of the bacteria required. I generally am only adding 6 to 12 fry to 300L so the bio load is very little as well. If i was to use an existing filter i would still change the substrate and some water, doing that is just basically changing tanks and doing a water change.
  4. it's at the bottom of every one of your posts you can move pm's to the saved box if you want
  5. cool, i hadn't heard that name before.
  6. what's a butterfly peacock?
  7. as i understood it they are some hybrid line bred thing out of germany. i'll happily take advice otherwise
  8. anyone ever caught one of these, are they good eating?
  9. there are plenty of hybrids and line bred africans throwing a specific trait around over seas. The vivid red peacocks are a good example and we even have those fire cracker tropheus here and from what i can tell a lot of them seem to come from germany. i am against hybridising african cichlids in NZ simply because of the limited stock we already have, if what we have left is crossed with another species we will quickly loose what "near to pure" fish we currently have and it's getting harder to bring in fish as well. In other countries that have large amounts of good stock there is no harm mixing and matching and i'm keen to see what they can come up with.
  10. i only clean mine every couple of months, maybe longer as i only clean it when the flow is significantly reduced so mine are much dirtier than that
  11. nice work. is the switch boyant enough to shut off with the water level or is there a float that will be attached?
  12. keep the dems, if anything add more i think to spread the aggro
  13. thumbing a ride? my thumb nail which i trimmed recently is around 16mm
  14. your doing it the right way, starting with larger groups so you have a good chance i think but you may have to make decisions you don't like to get it right.
  15. you don't have to, just manage them as they mature and get rid of the unsuitable fish. if you pay attention to the tank and their behaviour regularly you'll work out which are trouble and which aren't and then you can deal with them appropriately. I had a rogue duboisi male, all he did was chase everyone but he wasn't the dominant male and didn't breed with the females. All he seemed to do was fight and cause trouble so when I decided I had enough i got rid of him and the entire group chilled out and it has been pretty peaceful ever since. you can over stock etc with the right group of fish, one male can be completely different in temperament to another so you just have to select your group the best you can as they mature.
  16. totally agree, over stock, over feed and over filter has worked well for me. i'm not sure but they will be significantly larger and therefore will easily dominate and destroy. Even the most peaceful africans like the yellows go ape dodos when it comes time for breeding, i had a yellow male kill 3 females in the space of a week when he wanted to breed.
  17. i think your going to have some aggression issues with what you have in a tank that size. When a male wants to breed he takes up a certain amount of space and aggressively guards it. It will only take two males to cover your entire tank for their territories so every other fish will get chased, harassed and beaten so there will be plenty of damage i think. The Taiwans will get over 15cm, maybe up to 20cm so personally i think they will far to big to be in that tank but you may have a reasonable amount of time before they are. I had my red empress in a 1200x500x500 and they were ok in there with just a few other fish but that was only 1 male (15cm) and 3 females (10cm), not 10 fish. The dolphins will also get to a good size so i think you'll need to reduce your numbers significantly as they grow. personally i think there's a good chance your going to have some serious damage to the sub dominant fish, you may be lucky and not have any issues but it could go either way. I wouldn't add any tropheus to your tank, certainly not while you have the taiwans in there. I think you need to remove the taiwans before they get too large, without them you may be able to add another species and have good success.
  18. my first child was the end of my setup, and a lot of other things to. you get them back eventually, just takes 10 years or so
  19. different things are cool at different ages haha. it was awesome in those days having a setup like that as a bunch of us would cruise to the beach, open the hatch and we had tunes for a party. i like teenagers, they remind me of myself when i was young and stupid :slfg:
  20. nice! i really liked mine. It had the 1600 but i put an aftermarket coil, leads, 4 prong spark plugs and usually ran it on avgas and it moved pretty well for what it was. i also put two 15" and two 12" subs and it almost rattled so much it fell apart. the sunroof mounts fell out of the roof, doors wouldn't shut tight and teh rev counter and speedo needle would constantly wave by 20 degrees or so if you get what i mean. have you tried winding down the torsions? i found mine handled awesome with a bit of height adjustment.
  21. haha i used to have one of those, mine was silver and bumped on 17's but that was in 1997 i think. Loved the torsion bars in the front.
