  1. so you never open your windows or doors? wouldn't containing a cat in a house be the same as putting and aro in a 4 foot tank?
  2. looks good. there are some very good video on youtube about the rift lakes if you need inspiration.
  3. trap and drown works well where firearms aren't an option. alternatively when i lived in town a tom cat was bashing ours so i got a paint ball gun and managed to get it cornered on the deck, never saw it again. Trap and hose also works well to deter cats from coming back.
  4. Too hard basket i think. Imagine how many officers the pound would need. My parents had trouble with a tom cat o they borrowed a cage trap and caught it. After twenty minutes under the hose it was released never to return
  5. Because they are a cat. They can do what they like when they want haha we used to have a cat come here snd attack ours then we got a dog and no problem since.
  6. the one thing WE DO KNOW is that WE DON"T KNOW exactly how many native birds are killed by cats each year. which ever side your on you can find info or stats that boost your argument. cats kill x amount of rodents each year which can no longer kill natives or eat their eggs....... one cat killed x amount of native birds multiplied by how many cats we have equals a national tragedy of life lost....... it's the song that never ends. what i do know is there are plenty of native birds here along with the introduced species. there are also plenty of cats to, all my neighbours have cats as well. I have several tuis flitting around the pohutukawa daily less than 12 feet above my sleeping cats on the deck and they have been here longer than we have. i don't see any chance of my cats catching anything other than wax eyes, in the two years we have been here the only thing they have brought inside was a rat that i shot. to me it seems that the majority of cats are in suburbia due to lack of habitat, the majority of native birds are in rural areas so that works i think. A real issue is feral cats because they have to catch wild prey to survive, i don't think that domestic cats are of a major concern due to the thoughts above. I have likely shot between 1,000 and 1,500 possums in my life and in all that time roaming around i have seen two feral cats which i also shot. I think this whole subject is simply a "Do you like or hate cats?" topic and if gareth morgan is serious about increasing the numbers of native birds getting rid of domestic cats is the least effective way of achieving it. Getting id of domestic cats will improve some areas of society, the SPCA won't be over run with kittens every year etc but what will happen to rat and mice populations? maybe gareth has invested in a rodent poison company and this is a secret way to boost sales. :sml2:
  7. I don't think there's anyone that can say their cat hasn't killed anything if it is not disabled in some way.
  8. Ferile cats should be exterminated . Domestic cats are different.
  9. i am all for increasing native bird numbers, that is a great goal. I really don't think that reducing the amount of domestic cats is going to achieve a measurable difference on native bird numbers. If they are serious about doing something to allow native birds to flourish then I think they need to do more about getting rid of FERAL CATS, STOATS, FERRETS, WEASELS, POSSUMS and even other introduced birds like the indian myna. That will make a difference to native bird populations by predator numbers and competition for food. I'm not sure this whole issue from gareth morgan is about native birds, it seems to me that maybe he just has an issue with cats based on some statistics as it doesn't seem to make sense to me. I wonder how many native birds are killed by cars and trucks or how many native birds are actually out there. Next it will be locking up sharks to protect fish stocks.
  10. what stats are you referring to? the last stat i heard about possum population stated there are 70 million possums so nothing near eradication, yes doc is doing a lot to try and stop the possum but there certainly needs to be a lot more go into it. DOC also traps stoats, ferrets and cats don't they? How can be cats be worse for native birds than 70 million possums? Possums not only eat the eggs and fledglings, they also decimate trees that the natives feed on.
  11. Michael laws is against any one or anything that is more arrogant and self absorbed than he is so cats are a perfect target.
  12. i wonder what the result would be if every cat was instantly removed from the planet. Yeah there will be more birds but i'm not sure that we will see more natives around, certainly it's likely there will be an increase of the introduced birds. Will there be a dramatic increase in pests like mice and rats? Are people also aware that possums eat birds eggs and fledglings, the native birds that share the more rural bush areas (out of city limits) with possums which must be the majority of native populations will become more prolific if more effort is made to reduce possums, the fauna certainly will. I think gareth morgan's idea will be as successful as trying to ban beer and more funding should go to schemes like reducing possum numbers and planting native bush if they are serious about increasing native bird populations.
  13. what level of ph you wanting for what fish?
  14. within reason most info in fish keeping books can be contradicted by info in another, it's the nature of the hobby. there are too many variables for it to be a "black and white" hobby, there are so many ways to achieve the desired result.
  15. it's not beating it with a club, it's a short sharp impact on a hard surface then the job is done and the cat can enjoy it.
  16. that's a tidier way of doing the same thing. good idea.
  17. put the fish in a net then smack the net down onto the concrete holding the net handle so the comes down onto the concrete with the fish inside. I have done it with 2cm fish but just did it onto the work bench rather than the concrete.
  18. haha don't think it was designed with bike gangs in mind, more the metro sexual, apartment dwelling, skinny jean wearing mid 30's single/its complicated scooter riding male i think.
  19. put it in a net and smack it on the concrete, instant.
  20. My apologies i should have said unicycle :sage:
