after a couple of years i have ended up with the mix i have in my sig below. they get along well & has a good colour range. i tried having venustus & melanochromis species in there but they proved to be too aggresive.

hi & welcome from another african keeper. You won't regret it! What species are you planning to keep?
  6. its certainly part of farm life & hey most of us have a destuctive side. as for the scatter guns, i use a skb pump action & a stoaga semi which are pretty handy for that. the other gun of choice is a ruger 8 shot semi .22 with scope & silencer. i prefer the synthetic stocked guns.
  7. i grew up on a farm in northland. IMO the problem with the possums isn't so much that they eat the fauna, it's the fact that they are such prolific breeders so huge numbers eat alot. if their numbers are contained then they won't be such a problem. my friend has a farm at the base of the Tangihua Ranges. We would go shooting every week when the hedge apple trees were in fruit & we would shoot between 120-160 per two hour trip. it didn't matter how often we went out the numbers would always be there. the "possum runs" there looked like catle tracks there were so many. my cousin went on a trip with 6 others to a remote area of bush between kaikohe & dargaville. they went at night, each man had a gun & 200 rounds. there were so many possums there they could hear them walking around under the trees. every man ran out of ammo & he reckons they did not get half of them! im not sure how many of you are aware of their numbers but they are simply out of control hence the need for widespread kulling with poisons etc. as for the topic of the thread, that little one aint guna do anything so find it a new home. good luck.
  8. my tank ranges from 25 to 30 in the winter. our fire place warms it well past what the heater is set at. I have africans, they havn't seemed to have been effected at all by it in 2 years.
  9. thanks i had a lone female convict which spawned alone regularly.
  10. ah, the whole sticking to the wall was the confusing bit. what the full latin name for them so i can check out a profile?
  11. are they mouth brooders?
  12. i have no experience with those but you can gaurantee what he/she is by venting it.
  13. what else you got in the tank? are you sure they are african eggs? They dont appear to be the same as all the african eggs i've seen

    sunsun tanks

the early ones (which i have not seen) must have had lesser quality parts to the current models as these are excellent quality. As for cheap. anything will be when you buy direct from the importer as there has not been many hands adding margin.
  15. pull the battery out for a few minutes if you havn't all ready, it may reset.

    sunsun tanks

they do, thats why the stores stock them. i just remebered, sunsun has rebates in the hood for piping for canister filters etc which aqua one don't. which brand has done the thinking about its possible use?

    sunsun tanks

i agree. the reasons i think sunsun are better are: they have aluminium hoods rather than thin plastic aqua one, the opening section for the filtration is one large ali flap rather than than the separate thin plastic lids of the Aqua One. The colours IMO are better, i have the walnut unit. The cabinets (i am a cabinet maker) are better as they are foil wrapped which stops water getting into the doors & panels alot more than the melteca cabinetry with pvc edges of the aqua one. the new aqua one & jewel tanks are in my lfs now & they seem to be made in the same factory as their parts are indentical, just seem to have a different badge. I have had mine for over two years & i have had no problems at all & the unit looks as good & feels as solid as it did the day i got it & would not hesitate to buy more of them.
  18. apologies, not me, got a cold.

when did you view one? was it joshua on the shore? i must have a rare quality one my tank/hood & cabinet is much better than the aqua one units
  20. as far as i know (i deal with architects plans every day & think i have seen every crazy idea imaginable) the only substitute for glass is perspex which i think is aka "plexiglass" which if i remember rightly is a brand of perspex. any way, this is readily available from most glaziers in alot of differet colours & clear. it is realy expensive & prone to scratching alot more than glass (ever seen the old scratched boat windows that can't be seen through?), thats the same stuff. I would go with glass personally but up to your budget realy.
