  1. Yeah if you are likely to always be moving take ryanjury's advice. Also, when tanks become 1000's of litres the power consumption in tropical and marine tanks might become too costly, mainly in winter when the heater is always on, heat pumps can do the trick
  2. Isn't it an anubis? A underwater plant? :-?
  3. That looks awesome I wish I had a creative mind
  4. All I know is if they spend alot of time 'together' and seperated from the rest of the group, even chasing them off. After egg laying, the next few days the pair will stay and fan the eggs to keep fungus off etc... I don't think 'kissing' is a sure sign  I don't know if they loose their mucus, funny that one still has it :-? Are these 'unknown' babies in groups around these two? Good luck
  5. Its nearly impossible to tell discus apart, which is why you are advised to buy a group of about 6 young fish to pair off.... :-? Lets hope they are babies, I don't want to get your hopes up
  6. Yeah pet shops generally sell the stuff, but it is probably slightly more expensive, I just bought it from there as no shops had the daltons mix here either.
  7. Thats interesting.....Its too late to get mine out of the pond to see if they have red eyes I got them from Albany Hollywood fish farm and i'm sure they had the pink eyes which is why I got them, knowing they were 'albinos'. But now I think about it, maybe they are sunsets instead, do albinos ever sell in petshops? Sorry KA i'm probably going off the topic slightly, just curious if mine could be albino or sunset :-?
  8. You sure they don't have babies? I haven't bred discus before but after they lay eggs and they hatch, they develop a mucus on their bodies to feed the young for the first few days. They can intensivy into a darker colour when breeding. You sure they aren't parents with young fry??? Sorry I can't be much help, I have probably got your hopes up thinking you have fry when it could be a disease :-? Sorry and good luck, someone on here will help you out
  9. I'm trying to breed my "albino" minnows      I just have a group in an outdoor pond that is reasonably planted, the water has now turned slightly green so I can't see these albino animals but i'm hoping to have a pond full by winter :-? Good luck with yours, they aren't albinos with the red eyes just called sunset are they?

    Newbie to FNZAS

Welcome I haven't even introduced myself yet   :-?
  11. Well done :bounce: Is this type difficult to breed?? If so, good on you
  12. Sorry Jude that probably was a dumb question for me to ask   But its better to be safe than sorry
  13. I know they are more expensive but are beautiful fish, with the red line down the whole body instead of half like the neon. It is debatable about neons with discus, some books say they can go together with similar temperatures, others say the complete opposite. If your are still alive see how they go, they might have adjusted well. Other tetras....rummy noses (about $8 each), cardinals (about $8 each), harlequins (about $5 each), there are probably more and these fish like shoals of a minimum of about at least 6-8 fish. This is sometimes the reason people go for neons instead, due to the expense, but large shoals can look amazing in planted tanks. For effect I recommend to stick to your discus, cardinals and maybe rummy noses, but I haven't had any of these fish yet so I wouldn't really know, but other setups like this look awesome with a well planted tank Hope this helps
  14. Sorry I can't answer your lighting question aquarium dude  Is this aquatic mix at all poisonous/harmful to coldwater or tropical fish? Does it stop breeding etc :-?
  15. Where do you get this aquatic mix from and where is the cheapest place/ brand of it available?
  16. Also be sure you oren't overfeeding your fish They should be able to eat all the food in a couple of minutes. 'A slightly hungry fish is a healthy fish' Don't starve them though..... :-?
  17. Firstly as timtam has asked what is your water temperature? Discus and neons are different in their temperature requirements, discus requiring high temperatures of about 28-29 degrees celcius while neons prefer temperatures of about 22 degrees celcius. Although this might not be the reason, people often put these two together and the neons don't prosper in these temperatures. This might be different in your case. Are you overfeeding your fish? Maybe the neon has excited itself and gulps down all the food at each feeding, causing it to bloat and die. This has happend before to me. Maybe he is one of those 'greedy' fish that are quick to snap up any available food. Your feeding amounts should be enough to be eaten within a couple of minutes. Otherwise the food might cloud the water and affect the fishs' health. Due to the others being alive it is probably the fact that the neon was overeating. Watch your fish at feeding and make sure none are overfeeding (or underfeeding!), there isn't much you can do for this. Fish all have different personalitles. Good thing it was a neon and not a discus Poor thing, I don't know if this has helped at all  but someone might like to comment further on possible causes :-? Hope this helps

    Xmas Holidays

I have heard NOT to full the fish up prior to leaving but instead your normal feeding. Most fish easily can fast for about two weeks. It might do them some good  I don't think I would worry too much, unless you find someone to feed them who is local. I'm sure they will be fine. Might be best to check with others though, I could be wrong :-?

    Albino guppies.

When mine grow a bit more I might consider selling some off. I'll let you know caserole when I am about to sell them. The thing is they will mainly be males

    Albino guppies.

Good to hear rcon, I have a good 20 young growing up aswell, seems that our group has something going Now to create a market for albinos..... :-?
  22. Thanks again. You say that the parents eat as fast as they lay, how is it that babies orandas are born? Is someone there all day ready to remove them when they lay? :-? Seems amazing how some manage to hatch :-? I think most of my questions are answered, you have created quite a thread, thankyou
