  1. found this behind some bark on a macrocarpa tree. North east face. possibly the same species as pictured back on page 3 of this thread...
  2. na you must have forgotten. and how to tell the sex of the frogs & bds. was a super deal that one. :sml2:
  3. Good to see a decent amount of water in that newt tank. I do hope u have a lid though haha. I like the rockwork redrachie. Very tidy.
  4. Small enclosures i think thermostats serve a purpose. Larger/proper enclosure mercury vapour sound good. Then again one i got from varanophilein in the past blew within a few hours of turning on  My indoor enclosures were more holding tanks. 1550x600x400 and 1200x600x450 units. Generally one animal per etc and yeah probably a bit small hence i found thermostats good. Use to put lizards outside on good days, some times weeks at a time over summer/until it rained. Planned to make big outdoor enclosures, but plans change and i moved the animals on. Think you will find you get a better temp gradient, even in five foot enclosure, with thermostat and bulb over rock or tiles etc. Less ambient temp. I did anyway. Other thing with multiple enclosures, like i had, is the whole room heats up rather quickly. Hence had small bulbs on thermostats, minimal on time to save demand on aircon. Without aircon room got up to 30+ in summer. Outdoors much easier
  5. yeah they get use to it, ones i have put outside in the past normally do that when i walk past. but they soon get over it. never seen the same reaction with just the light going on though ... it aint mood lighting ... or is it
  6. i never used thermostats for the first couple of years keeping lizards. use to choose bulb with appropriate wattage to get desired temp around mid day. was not fail safe though and got sick of checking temps all the time. now prefer to use thermostats as much easier to get desired temp and consistently year round. . also wonder if reptiles see it as a more natural heat source too. like the sun goes behind clouds than back again and so on much like when using a thermostat.
  7. i dont get it? once warmed up ... if staying at appropriate temps then you ought to have a thermostat to keep the heat source turned off in turn saving power? my basking bulbs, with thermostat, use to be on less than 50% of the time. thermostats and basking bulbs off at night.
  8. heating outdoor ponds in winter is probably more trouble than it's worth. warm water cold air not good anyway. snowed on my ponds last year - well the plastic cover. couple of long necks and 3 old red ears - young red ears too - oops did not know they were in there - but by end of this summer they're 12cm+ so seem to be loving it long time. snowy winter good for mantrol ? stopped feeding a few weeks ago down here. they still bask on good days atm, elns surprisingly active at cooler temps i find. breed em tough down here :sml2: best thing to do is provide the setup months before winter and let them be.
  9. snowed here last winter. best breeding season on record. but yeah best to keep young warm until 10cm but after that as long as have access to sun for basking no heating required outdoors.
  10. :sml2: good insulation for ponds in winter too
  11. they can still get from one end to the other in under 3 seconds. providing they don't crash into the heater haha. they grow fast, especially females. they are double what they were a couple of months back. by summer they will be double again.
  12. Good food source. Helps reduce algae and provides some cover for the turtles. They often sleep floating amongst it if it's thick enough
  13. This is an example of a very basic turtle tank. 120x38x38cm tank The four young turtles in here will outgrow this tank within a year. Basking light and platform well and truly within a year. They are already 5cm at only 4 months old; hatch at about 2-2.5cm? Will go in a pond come summer.
  14. cant find his turtle thread. stating no uv for turtles now. what a winner http://www.trademe.co.nz/pets-animals/reptiles-turtles/accessories/auction-467121424.htm i recently purchased a little snake sneck from the district that seller is in. funny enough was kept in exactly the same sort of tank and they had had two snakenecks kept in it for a couple of years. funky bright fluro fruitsalad substrate full of snails. snail + substrate = double trouble imo. anyway one turtle died, no surprise, hence the person selling the remaining one  a little outlay and proper research turtles are so easy to care for. you'd think shops would like selling the proper equipment.
  15. thnk mine is just xmas moss. i did have a native one in there but it died off when temp got up around 25C. May hear the odd chuckle when vacuming or have motorsport on tv :sml2: but they hardly ever fully croak in most indoor enclosures. The frog will probably eat the newt.
  16. Red wally sun burnt? :sml2: Joe wins :sml2: Albino tree frogs are neat. Great enclosure you have put together there Devo.
  17. yeah they can swim :sml2: in all seriousness though they seem fine with a large water column. lets face it they do well in/around ponds and puddles bigger than most vivs people provide. however i do generally keep it lower than that as the moss grows better and gives crickets places to hide so the frogs can have a forage around, and or there is always food in there, then i just raise the water level at least every couple of weeks as that almost instantly brings all the live food up out of hiding
  18. may find if left outdoors for a week or two they would utilise ye old sun more. have seen a few bds, and skinks, freak out when put in outdoor enclosures for only a couple of hours here and there and consequently they often just hide defeating the purpose. instead of offering a place for them to fully hide just an open area that is shaded may encourage them back out to bask instead of sulking about in a hide adult bds can tolerate fairly low temps at night provided they get a chance to warm up and do what they do during the day.
  19. i know what they are up to. . . the old king of the castle trick. flood
  20. worms can slither into the brain and take over the animal. then come breeding time instead of laying eggs all you get is worms. that's where tequila worms come from. nothing wrong with the intranet. hth
  21. they are neat little frogs eh. yours are looking nice and healthy
