  1. Anything that moves is food in the eyes of a turtle so it will try but whether it gets it today or some other day depends on how fast the fish is and how hungry the turt gets  Convicts are about the only fish ive had survive for ages in a turtle tank, give it ago i say and it gives the turtle some excerise/something to do! Ppl who think its cruel get over it, thats life lol p.s if you want the fish to have a better chance give em some where to hide like in some rocks etc and keep the turts well fed at all times.
  2. I just thought terrapin was a fancy name for turtle lol
  3. Awesome your on to it, thanks for that. My moneys on the Nitella ( http://www.fnzas.org.nz/plant_survey/aq ... 067f45c44a )

  5. Yea Just the stock, can be common with guppies to just cull em or try get stock from various places to widen the gene pool etc p.s my turtles will happily take any bent leopards if you want to dispose of any, they like going on a bender
  6. hmmm thanks ppl - looks like bladderwort is a banned plant after doing a quick search (http://www.fnzas.org.nz/articles/planta ... st_plants/) but I cant find a good picture of bladderwort itself (just bladderwort flowers  ) so im not conviced thts what it is. Its got no leaves just a hairy mess tht smells funny when taken out of the water haha and no flower tht ive seen.
  7. Seems to grow in cold and tropical happily, could be noxious hence why Id like to know what the stuff is if anyone can help that would be great. .
  8. So do they come out of the water to get their food then go back into the water to eat it??
  9. What i dont get is the last auction was pulled cos it was in the wrong section (should be a classified) yet theyve just relisted it again in the wrong section (FROGS ARNT FISH). i wouldnt be surprised if it gets withdrawn again.
  10. It has a plastic tray in the bottom which you can/suppose to fill with water, but ive been abit slack this year checking that which hasnt effected my turtle eggs as theyre in ice cream containers inside the incubator which get a mist every so often. For an idea of size it fits 4 icecream containers inside perfectly!
  11. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 261899.htm Ive got one of the hova bator jobs and they work good as!
  12. Hey thanks everyone for the tips/info etc greatly appreciated. As my so called pond is just a polythene liner there isnt any seddement/dirt on the bottom for them to dig into so should i be adding some soil or something or I presume they will be ok as is?
  13. Ive want me turtles (red ears an maybe me snakenecks) to hibernate this year so not gonna heat their pond/s etc. Just been reading up a lil on the net and suggests (red ears atleast) they burrow into soil/seddement in the bottom of the pond? Or reading "keeping red-eared turtles in NZ" by TJ Thornton his book suggests putting them in a wooden box with soil and sphagnum moss etc, cant say i like the sound of puttin me turtles in a box somewhere and the chances of keeping it cold enough arnt as great as just leaving them in their pond surely?. I know to stop feeding them a week or 2 b4 hibernation etc but dont know much else really  Im geussing most people who have them in ponds just leave em to it but just wundered if anyone on here had any advice from experience etc Also curious about hibernating Reeves turtles aswell as the snakenecks and redears. . . Cheers Matt
  14. Whats wasp larve ?? sounds interesting where do you get that? For fungus Id add abit of salt which i do every now an again with my turtles anyway. Also why has it got fungus, does it have a heat lamp and some where for it to bask/sunbath etc, turtles really love sunning them self and is essential they dry their shell out often!
  15. wots a "pump plastron" do you mean a bump in the plastron??
  16. $805 for a frog well ill be dammed. :bounce:
  17. Sorry for all the questions I admit I have no idea when it comes to lighting hence why the questions  Metal Halide These rate number one for aquarium lighting because of the intensity and spectrum, but a UV lens should be fitted. Bulbs should be replaced at about 12 monthly intervals. However they are expensive to purchase. The unit with bulbs should be suspended well above the water surface because they generate a lot of heat. Then on my mh glass cover (to cover the light) it says UV FILTER-001 & on the packet for the 150watt mh bulbs ive got it says UV Shield, ultraviolet protection Now what im getting at is dont plants need and thrive off uv & and what are all these uv shields, filters & lens things doing??? A freind told me a while ago that over the years they've been trying to reduce the uv in which lighting gives off as it is harmfull (causes cancer etc) but if thats true does this mean that the bulbs are no longer as good for the plants in our tanks etc ?
  18. $305 now crikey I hope it turns into a prince for some body haha
  19. Dunno maybe someone complained as your not suppose to auction anything other than fish from what i understand it should of been listed in otherpets as a listing not an auction, which sux cos then the fun of an auction is lost. Same goes with turtles you can run an auction in the fish section but if someone brings it to tm's attention they'l withdraw it and give ya a warning  . I maybe wrong but tm seem to be pulling random auctions lately even some fish auctions, all seem to have had good bids on to so maybe ppl are complaining. Tms reasoning is tht in an auction you cant choose/make sure its going to a good home but in a listing you can  some fish are rather valuable and just as important as a frog/turtle/otherpet (rat/mice) etc so how and why fish can be auctioned freely and not other pets has me stumpd, seems to be double standards imo it should be all or nothing, I think tm needs to clarify what can an cant be auctioned. I maybe completely wrong but thts how i see it at the moment, would be interesting to see what other opinions are on this.
  20. Crikey darn birds I'd never really thought of it before but makes sense. Sooo other than shooting the birds is there any way to stop them, maybe heaps of plants would be an option to atleast help give the fish a place to hide??
  21. My mothers neigbour rekons they have a shag thats cleaned out their pond of all its goldfish  Has anyone had this happen before? I geuss its just not the sort of shag 1 wants near the pond
  22. wickid you sure had a good collection rcon. so have you sold the lot?
  23. i seem to see them in my compost heap every time i turn it over to get earth worms out for me turtles etc. the whiteworms may be there cos i chucked out an old culture there but i cant remember if i did or not. also i remember reading somewhere tht if you dig a spud into the ground leave it for a couple of weeks then dig it up it will have whiteworms init (cant say ive tried this but someone else may know more) otherwise maybe easier/quicker to just buy a starter culture
  24. So did you have any luck in the end fighting off the thread algae? Looks like ive got the same thing in a couple of my tanks now, yippi yet another thing to deal with
