    Beginners Cichlids

I've had Kribs recommended by a rep at Hollywood's... How do you think they'd work?
  2. Hey guys, I'm in the process of moving the fish in my lounge tank into the hallway tank and I was considering stocking the soon-to-be empty tank with cichlids... Specifically I was thinking about convicts, but then I actually thought about it, and realised that'd be a bad idea, 'cause I don't have any way of culling the fry out... What would you guys suggest for a tank that holds about 100L? I'd like more than one or two fish, so I'm kind of lost! I've got a photo of the tank linked here
  3. I had a group of 4 of these guys, they do better in groups I would say that what you're doing is probably enough - I used to drop a sinking tablet for bottom feeders once a week just before lights out to feed my ones

    watts vs inches

Take a look at the link John, it's a hex-tank, but shaped like this: ----- | | \__/ If that makes any sense... I wouldn't have a clue how to work out the literage from that, but I was told it's 100L and it's 19" high...

    watts vs inches

Well, the tank supposedly holds 100L (I haven't checked this, I'm too lazy), so I'd need upwards of 75W for a high-light tank? That seems too extreme, as there's only 30W in my AR510, and there's plenty of light there...

    watts vs inches

Hey guys, Just a quick question - for a tank that's 19" tall, is a 15W light bulb sufficient? It's only being used for White Clouds, but I'm planning on planting it relatively heavily, so I'm guessing I probably need to splash out & get a new fixture + bulbs... Link to a pic of the tank is here - http://www.nik.co.nz/stuff/tank00001.jpg About 3" of the tank is covered by the hood, and at least 2" is covered by the base

    New tank!

I've just got myself a tank off TradeMe and I'm so happy! :bounce: I'm planning on stocking it with WCMM and maybe a couple of ancistrus & corydoras. It holds about 100L supposedly.. I've just filled it with water and got my old internal filter going, so I might go buy some plants/fish tomorrow! What plants do y'all think would be good to go with it?

    Algae

oh true, I'd forgotten about the salts!

    Algae

mine's just standard Auckland tap water (minus chlorine etc of course!)... It looks to me to be too much light, and nothing competing with the algae so it grows unchecked... I'd rather not add chemicals either, if at all possible!

    Algae

Hi guys. I've got a brackish tank in my hallway (sitting at about 1.010 I think) and there's all this almost colourless algae growing all over the walls of the tank. How can I combat this, other than never turning the lights on? It's not full salinity, so I'm kinda too scared to chuck a $40 shrimp in there! Any sane suggestions will be gratefully tried out!
  11. they'll drop a few babies every few weeks =) the only way to stop them breeding is to have the sexes completely separated, and even then that might not be enough... If mollies are anything like guppies, the females can store sperm for quite some time...
  12. roughly a few million every other week? seriously? they should 'drop' a few every few weeks.. They're as bad as guppies! Although the three black mollies I've got (1 boy + 2 girls) don't seem to have been playing naughties... Fishbase says: Does that help?
  13. it's a coldwater goldfish tank. I thought SAE's were tropical?
  14. heh bugger! I'm looking for tetraodon nigriviridis... My boyfriend is very specific that he wants THAT one!
  15. it'll be a while yet before I get up to full strength, as I haven't even got the puffer yet! I'm getting two bumblebee gobies today (as soon as my olds arrive ) and when my boyfriend gets back in the New Year, we'll go puffer shopping
  16. what about things like the hermit crabs / rockpool shrimp/fish you can find at beaches? If it's a more or less permanent rockpool they'd be accustomed to less than full marine wouldn't they? I'm just trying to find out what else I can get to live in a brackish tank So far, my java fern appears to be holding up as well
  17. I'm aiming for 1.010 at the moment... But as I'll have a puffer in there, I'm pretty sure I'll *eventually* have 1.020 or thereabouts... Are there not any shrimp that'd live in half-strength salinity?
  18. Hey guys, This is probably a stupid question, but would the shrimp you see in the marine section of Jansens survive in a brackish (1.010) setup? I've got a tank that I'm converting across to brackish at the moment, I've got some mollies in to help with the cycle, tomorrow a pair of bumblebee gobies will be introduced, and I've started to notice some brown algae on the glass.. a) would the shrimp help with that algae b) would they survive/thrive in a brackish tank?
  19. yeah that's what I thought.. Does it sound diseasy or like a vicious act on the algae eaters behalf?
  20. Quick update - I've now been told that the fish has gone white, and he's swimming on a 45º angle at the top. It also sounds like he's gulping for air...
  21. Hi guys! I've just had one of the managers at my work ask me this question.. She's got a tank with some goldfish in it, and she's added a couple of gold algae eaters a few days ago. Since then she's noticed that the biggest comet has some scales change colour & his tail is all frayed. D'ya think this could be the algae eaters? All her other fish are fine. She says he's not all bloated and pine-cone like, so I think the most likely cause (without actually seeing the fish) would be the algae eaters?
  22. The stuff I've got is made by Red Sea.. I don't know the exact name, 'cause I just cut out the little diagram on the side of the pack & threw the rest away! Does Red Sea do Instant Ocean?

    LED lighting

Does anybody know what kind of light the LED's would put out? Like, would it be any good for plants? Or would they really just be more for decorative purposes...
  24. Maybe they wouldn't be so worried if it was like a public aquarium though... Then again, maybe they would be!
