  1. Yeah it's not a Mekong cat, the following link is Mekong, and there are a range of photos to flick through of things that come from the river... check out the giant ray!!!!! If you look, the eyes and mouth are way different also. The Mekong's eyes sit very low down, almost near the jawline. I remember seeing the article online about the photo of the cat that the two guys are holding, can't recall the species they said it was. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/11/photogalleries/giantcatfish/
  2. Would be awesome to meet the man 8) Lucky you Brad oh and Frenchy if he is tagging along    Wonder if he will ever bless our presence here in lil ol' NZ at some stage
  3. I guess you could try them together however as livingart said they are aggressive when spawning and for territory, however, as most know Kribs can be also   Yet the Brichardi can pack a bit more punch... I certainly wouldn't say Brichardi are fine in a smaller fish community tho with tetras etc, I have heard of someone getting away with keeping one, but more than one hmmmm  Brichardi live in a tight knit family unit and work together raising young, so if you were to get a number of them, down the track once everything is settled and they are breeding, your Kribs could end up looking a bit battered or cowering in a corner... Also lastly keep in mind that your Brichardi do prefer somewhat harder water conditions. HTH 8)
  4. Not going to be losing nice yellow Pulchers from here I keep both and I'm certainly not going to be mixing them due to the fact that they have been reclassified as the same species, would just totally wreck the "colour strain" if that's what they now class it as...
  5. Have 2 on a long vacation at the moment, Ambrocious and Gabriella are visiting uncle mincie

    ID please!

I'm with Brad, looks like a salvini to me too.
  7. Yeah long term there could be problems... and you would need a year supply of Melafix   You could find the odd GT who wouldn't be a problem, but it's the old case of trial and error... maybe if you grew them up as juvies you could have more chance of keeping them together as adults. But with keeping both, I would say that the JD's certainly wouldn't have a happy life in with our GT's. Oh and I'm a dudette
  8. Jack Dempsey or Green Terror I presume? Definately Green Terror (Gold Saum)... we keep these guys, they can pack some punches even more so than Mr Jack Dempsey... no comparison for aggressiveness, our JD's were pretty laid back unless spawning, GT's on the other hand, look for trouble.
  9. Definately agree with comment on the Demasoni, if not given enough space and territory these guys will wipe each other out quicker than bush's troops :-? And tinytawnykitten, never apologise for being such a newbie, we all have to start somewhere How about some more platys and some corydoras and a couple of bristlenoses for the hexagon?

Just don't do anything hasty yet Ryan, there might be light at the end of the tunnel Would hate for you to do something straight away 8) That pic from the cichlidforum of the maleri species is vey similar to your pic... my male from the maleri shipment was a dead ringer of that pic... but of course being that no variant was given on arrival, go with the usual Aulonocara sp. maleri 8) he was in my display tank, not sure if you ever saw him?? So there could be a possibility your male came from the same shipment?

Definately not hansbaenschi... It almost looks like a male I had ryan that came in a maleri shipment...
  12. Yeap we only bred them the once to obtain cert for breeding... not the easiest fish to find homes for as alanmin said... even tho a larger tank full of Jewels can look awesome... especially against white... we found that even with lighter substrate etc, they still coloured beautifully and the redness and blue speckles really looked stunning with white background.
  13. Thanks fishy_t... it was interesting but agree with you guys, and no way to allowing them to cross, I won't be crossing both anyway... nice to keep them clean
  14. Yikes 2ft tank definately asking for trouble with Jewels, once paired they will kill others off if there is not enough space for territory... we used to keep Red Jewels, great fish... but yeap, very highly aggressive at times. Definately a good thing that you will get a bigger tank... most semi aggressive cichlids do quite well with them if you are wanting tank mates... Some keep Blockheads in with them.. them being non rift lake species also if you wanted to stay African. I wouldn't go with Kribs tho... a little too placid for Jewels long term... some Synos would be good for catfish...
  15. He is certainly a handsome chap... gee he goes for butch females aye
  16. Awesome pics Ryan Is the OB male that was sent to you a wee while ago from here?
  17. They take a while to mature physically as in get to that stage... at least 20cm mark with our boy... As he is getting older the head is becoming more pronounced. The deepness in the body is a key factor.
  18. It could be just a larger female... hard to say unless both fish seen 8) Cichlids are addictive
  19. The male is bigger and alot deeper in the body, both have whispy long dorsal fins, his is a wee bit more so than hers. He has also a pronounced forehead as he matures and even tho the species is rather oval shaped, she is more so than him when they mature as he deepens in body. The pic you sent me of one snookie is a female, are you able to get a shot of the other one?
  20. I think it depends on the fish itself, I have successfully put an african female back in with her fry rather a few days after I stripped her, she needed a good rest from the male so thought I would try... she didn't touch a single fry... of course there were rocks, but even at feeding time they would come out and she wasn't interested in them, yet in other cases, of course depending on the nature of the fish and how greedy they are for nosh... they would of course snap anything small enough up. I think it is more the case, are you willing to risk and see? 8)
