  1. Thats why you feed only enough for the fish to keep an eye in a matter of seconds... rather than dump a load in and the cunning ones (or some would say lucky ones) get away
  2. They were illegally exported out of the country they came from to start with, the exporter did not have rights to the fish to start with, according to info given.
  3. Yeap convicts would be an excellent choice, they are actually a beautiful looking fish too, even tho they breed like flies...
  4. I have known convicts to happily raise a batch of fry and breed again while still have the existing fry growing on, and all have been happy campers, some are better than others huh 8)
  5. Definately an awesome newsletter, really stylish too! 8)
  6. This thread is being kept open at this stage till admin decide on the danio issue on forums (now that maf have acted upon reports)... yet with such a new thread started there is arguments and what seems like personal attacks already :-? .. please keep it clean or it could end up locked if things get out of hand.
  7. Once they get to a good size 10cm fatties they can really do damage... so might pay to keep a close eye.. Some keepers end up putting them in with large cichlids, ie Oscars etc when they reach maturity. Blue botias etc are to be kept in your larger fish when mature and they are nowhere near as destructive as the good ol' Skunks

    Sexing Rams

The pics are really hard to tell as they are blurry this end.... are you able to get some clearer shots? We used to keep Blue Rams and they bred well in their planted tank, but of course the cories etc always used to scoff the eggs at night.. never did much in the way of breeding them, was too busy with the Africans   Oneday... The sexual differences we noticed with ours was: Our males were larger, alot leaner and almost longer in body whereas the female is alot chunkier and plump crimson coloured belly. The male has a longer front ray on the first (front) of his dorsal fin. And the extensions underneath on the male ram are alot longer than females.
  9. Sorry to hear of your outbreak and loss Frenchy , glad the others are on the mend tho 8)
  10. I notice that the Turks that I have go dark when there are territorial issues going on in the tank, once over, they resume back to normal colour, moody buggers at times  So it could possibly be what Frenchy says, I have one smaller one that is often dark because it seems to be of lower rank in the group.
  11. I know of people keeping them in with semi aggressive cichlids... convicts etc... Skunks can be really awful with fin nipping and often do most of their attacking of fins at night too :-?
  12. No haven't parted with any young at this stage, keeping rather a few on here for fish shed.
  13. We both surfing ryan before the meeting  And kidless tonight so both have some comp time for once They are a nice fish and have got two lots growing on at the moment and they are currently still on the suppliers list.
  14. PICTURE PERFECT freshwest  The colony is out of this world, beats plants hands down  Hubby and I got to have a look at these guys when we were up in Auckland, and the fish and tank are to die for
  15. That is an excellent price, great to snaffle at a great price when they at times run end of stock specials etc
  16. Welcome Yeah come on over and join the HBAS
  17. A big Welcome to the forums... my dad was a pom (Londoner) so no complaints here
  18. We use Post Haste, they have been excellent here in Napier, always happy to freight fish, even at the stage now of asking about them etc  The ladies and the depot guys are great! If we have something sent to us, they put it in the warm office at early hours of the morning, don't leave it sitting on depot floor. The same goes when we are sending off in the afternoon, they leave the package in the warm office till it's time for the truck to leave. Definately always pays to write, fragile, live tropical fish etc on the box, would be silly not to... I have also had fish sent to me via Courier Post and their service is excellent too! Not the same company is excellent in different locations tho, I have had a huge run in with Post Haste CHCH before, pity the poor guy who was on the other end of the phone early that morning   I paid hefty money for an overnight service... the package was meant to fly from CHCH to Palmerston and then vanned from Palmy to Napier... CHCH didn't read the overnight stickers and put the fish on a 2 day line haul truck to go over the ferry etc, by the time the fish arrived they were frozen fillets, mistakes can happen but their attitude was disgusting and no sorry for the mistake.
  19. Hi Amazonian I hopefully have a pair that are still showing big interest. I am not concetrating on breeding them as yet, as I am waiting for the fish shed to be finished, shed completed and painted now just the sump set up etc and more tanks... The Angels have been cleaning glass etc but often are interrupted by either another or something else in their planted tank. At this stage after shutting down a few tanks inside awaiting shed, I really don't have enough space to be setting another up inside :-? Will definately keep you posted when I do have some youngsters tho, they are fantastic and a beautiful nature.
