    silver dollars

i had 5 large silver dollors in my comunity tank. they didnt bother any other fish at all, very peacefull. i found that they were always on edge tho and would peak out at anything bolting from one end of the tank to the other as fast as they could go. if another fish got in there way they would of been history. apart from that they are very nice fish and get quite big! i never kept plants with them either.

    lights

im currently using one of those lights with a cord add to it. its a matter of putting the red wire to the red hole the black to... etc. they are the same thing as any other fluro but with differnet housing. i have also changed the tubes but theres probley nothing wrong with the ones that it comes with.

    Is it legal??

dont you mean your friend would get arrested  im no expert on the law but i wouldnt think you would get in trouble. you can catch live saltwater fish and take them home alive.

    discus beginer

thanks sharn. yeah at the mo im doing around 25% water change every day or two. when i get my filter for my other tank i will put them into that tank with a barebottom untill they grow a bit, but that wont be for a month or so yet ok then i think that ill get the 4 discus, the two blue rams, a few corys for clean up crew, around 6 cardinals and a copple of algae eaters. will this be too cramed for a tank 1mx0.5x0.5 with the heavly planted tanks wouldnt the plants help maintain the water by using up the nitrates etc? the two discus are doing fine at the moment they are even eatting colour bits and flake, ive only had them for a few days
  5. this 1200 is only $130 the 1000 was $119, only 11 dollors. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 740600.htm
  6. cut off some of the bracings and then re slicnoe them back on
  7. i would get it for the extra $20 or whatever the differnece is
  8. hey i just brought my 2 first discus :bounce: i got them from nzdiscus, a brilent blue and red turq. im just wondering how sensitive are they to there water conditions (pH, hardness, temp and nitrate). how do people keep there pH down, i was thinking peat in the filter but will this stain the water?? at the moment theyre in my ar980 with some other comunity fish, i give them small water changes every day. also im going to buy some ox hart today and mince it up with a bit of garlic in it, what elese can i mix into it?? also just wondering with discus is it better to have them in even grops like 4 or would 3 be ok? they will be moved into a 250l tank soon, the stock will be 2 altum angles, 2 blue rams, 4 panda corys, and 10 cardinals and heavly planted with a 1200lph canister. would 4 discus be to much for this tank?
  9. when you start the filter you need to fill the canister right up, so that nob turns and comes off and you poor the water in the hole to fill it up. the taps are sweet, makes it easy to clean the filter just turn them off and take the top of the filter off and no water will leak out while you clean it. being aquaone i would think that spear taps and things would be easy to get if you broke one anyway. if you were worried about to much flow then you could turn the tap off a littlle bit i spose. i think ill get the 1200 for my tank, the price difference between the 1000 and the 1200 is buger all i think
  10. heres some pics of my cf700 the 1200 should be pretty much the same. oh there is heaps of differnent fittings you can use too. they also come with filter media too 8)
  11. hey, i have a cf500 and a cf700 and i love them! i havnt had any problems with them in the year that i have owned them. the other thing i like about them is that they dont cost too much as for the size of the filter i would be sweet, but if you plan on having a heavly planted tank then it might be to much flow? not sure if it affects it or not. im in the process of setting up new tank too and plan on putting a cf1000 or cf1200, its going to be heavly panted tank so im not sure if the flow of the filters actuly affects the plants and co2 levels or not? maybe someone could help me??
  12. you will need alot more light than that i would think. somewere between 0.5-1 watt per leter is the place to aim
  13. i have had a ar980 for about 18months now with now problems at all.
  14. im about to setup a planted tank too. i got a base called aquatic mix from a garden center(its a clay mix) and then sand on top. its quite a dark colour and only costed $4 for a big bag.
  15. i have an afican mbuma tank and also an american tank with 3 oscars and a few buddys. the africans are really pretty and colourful but the oscars are by far my fav! like sharn said they are pretty much part of the family! they also come in many different colours and parterns. heres my "puppys"
  16. yeah i have one of those cheapies. they work well for what they cost. and like you said if it does stop working just get another one.
  17. i have done pretty much exactly what you have done. we took out most of the ordements (left a couple in for fish to hide in) and started on one side and scooped out the old stuff and added the new washed stuff. we left the fish in the tank too. we had no problem with water qualty after, but we gravel syphon every water change and have two canisters on the tank. good luck

    co2

HandS doyou use a needle valve? the tap on the side is way to touchy to adjust it, could it be posible that it is "worn out" i went to the only model shop in town an they didnt really have what i needed. they had one which was tiny and i would need to get reducers no make the tubing fit onto it and was $50 i was wondering if anyone has one lying around that they would sell me? or would i beable to make one? the tubing is around 1cm outside diameter.

    co2

i just brought a new co2 setup off trade me. :bounce: is it suposed to be really had to get the bubble rate to stay the same? to adjust it, it has a tap on the side of it which you only need to turn it a fraction to adjust it and is easly to much or not enough and then itll change after a few minutes so i have to change it again  is the tap ontop of the bottle ment to be opened all the way and then the side regulater to adjust the flow?
  21. ok so what are other commonly used plants for foregrounds? i would like something that is easy to maintain? the tank is going to have a MH and maybe some flruos, co2 and good substrate (250l). im still keen on trying glosso but might experiment in another tank with different plants.
  22. hey im looking for foreground plant for my new tank project. i like the look of Glossostigma elantes, which they are using here: http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/foru ... ounds.html i was wondering if this is available in nz? or is there something else similer to this which i could use?? if anyone has any i would be interseted in buying some from them. thanks for any help!!

    Cichlids

hey, this is my tank: i have used crushed coral as my substrate but im pretty sure there is better stuff out there to use, someone else will help you on this one. i have also used dead coral rock also but you can use just about anything for this but limestone is another good one to use. the coral and lime stone etc is good because it helps buffer the water and keep the pH up.

    angelfsh

if you want to keep them then try set something up in the tank that they can lay there eggs on and you can then remove it into its own tank and bring up the fry your self

    angelfsh

depends on how much you want to keep them. if you dont want them then what i do is just rub the eggs off. if you want to keep them then i would probley just leave them alone and let the parents take care of them. but because its probley there first lot of eggs they might eat them tho. i havnt bred any angels before but should be the same case as most other american cichilds hope this helps
