-
im about to make my new tank in the next few days and want to make sure that i get the right silcone. in tanks that i have made in the past i have used a natural cure. but from what people are saying on here it sounds like i should be using acidic cure. i thought that the acidic cure would leech out contaminates into the tank water. am i rong?

Wok how big is you cichild tank? what other fish do you have in there?
-
when i first got mine it was tinny about 1-2inches. i thought that he would be ok in my community tank for a few weeks becuase he was tiny and couldnt possible eat anything..... well let me tell you. in 5 days he ate 7 neons he was only just bigger than a neon in the tank then i put him in my community cichild tank containing oscars that were the same size and he just kept on picking on everyone!, so now hes in his own tank. cool fish tho!
-
yes thats what i was thing, something like java moss and furns. i was also going to try and cycle it for as long as prossible with something like neons, that way it will give the plants time to settle in. (and when it comes to add the new fish they have a treat ) really would like some swords like these ones http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 916731.htm

screwing it to you hood will be fine, the fluro light i got from miter10 had a clear plastic cover over the tubes anyway and came with 2 tubes and it only costed like $55 or something
-
i have brought a fluro light from miter10 and it works fine had it going for about 6months now with out a problem. you just need to wire a cable with a plug on the end of it to it. i also replace the tubes for other ones

someone was telling me the other day that scoria rock is really good for bio media and its really cheap, like $5 for a bag from a garden shop how would this work compered to noddles and other products thanks
-
yes you could put some oil just along were your cuting itll help. at work (aluminium joiner) we just use air tool oil.
-
you could use laminate glass, that has pretty good thermal propertys, or neven better get a peice of doulble glaze glass made up for it
-
i have a cf500 and cf700 aqua one canister filters. i havnt had any problems and they are really cheap for new ones on trademe. also have crystal clear water.

when you run the cutter over the glass, only do it once and make sure you use a nice firm pressure to make a good scratch on the glass. make sure its got oil in it(the cutter) once you have scratched it brake the glass straight away dont leave it then come back later and do it! once you have used the cutter, tap the underside of the scratch at one of the ends, with the end of the cutter to get the break started. then flex the glass along and you will see it seperating. if you cutting a long peice then clamping the straight edge to the glass helps too so you dont have to hold the ruler and cut the glass at the same time. hope this helps.

i was just going to have the hole at the top of the tank were i wanted the water line and have it dain straight down to the sump through some pvc pipes. i have brought a conection for the hole with a 42mm internal size. so ill need about 55mms cut into the glass to fit it thanks for that site.

no i dont yet  im not sure on how much flow will be needed. i was thinking of 2000-3500lph does this sound about right what kind of flow do other people have on there sumps with tanks around this size. also does the sump need to be any particualer volume( i was thinking about 150-200l)? yes it would be 40mm internal dia.
-
ok im going to be ording the glass on monday :bounce: , so i need to know what size hole i need in the back for the overflow. i was thinking of making it 40mm. will this be big enough i.e i dont wont the water pumped back into the tank faster that what it can flow back out  can someone please help
-
so what kind of turn over(LPH) does everyone think i should have?
-
thanks for the response. the fish that i have listed i already own and are all in the same tank at the mo. the convicts are only babys, just sexable and they are already breeding . they are by far the most aggressive in the tank at the mo and im not to worryed if i gota give them there own tank. i thought that the red spot only got small compred to most plecos  oh well. but yeah they do make a lot of mess! 700l, thats cool i havnt ordered the glass yet ill just play with the messurments to get it around 700l. the jag i have at the mo is female i think and is in a tank of its own as it was picking on my smallest oscar when i first put him in there, i think ill try and put him in there and keep an eye on it but i think your right itll be to phyco for the others so what size hole should i get put into the tank for the overflow and how many LPH pump would i be looking at. is there any rule of thumb for sump sizes compered to the display tank? if someone has some links for sump designs would be good

im in the desisign stages of making a new tank for my american cichlids which are currently in my ar980. i have: 2 baby oscars 2 baby convicts (m/f) 1 baby blue acara 1 jack dempsey 1 festivum 1 baby fire parrot 1 red spot pleco 1 syno cat i also have a baby jag in another small tank that im planning to put in there too. now im thinking of making a 630l tank(150cm long x 70cm wide x 60cm high) and using 10mm glass with bracing im wanting to use a sump filter for this tank. im looking for some diagrams for how to set up the sump. also what kind of pump, what flow rate it should be and what size hole will i need in the main tank for the water to flow out. any help for this project would be good thanks

i currently have 2 small o's about 6" in a community of american cichlids. i have brought a small remote control submarine for them and they love it

hey still looking to hear other peoples opinoins about this. what would be the best setup for these two filters?
-
so do you think that i should run them seperatly, but have one as the bio with a small amount of machanical and one as the machanical? or should i keep them both as mainly bio and get a hang on filter or something similer and fill that with a machanical media i have purgen, but i cant get matix down here in nelson i havnt had any problems with what im using so ill stick with that i spose. what about bio balls (the plastic ones) are they any good? the filters came with some in them and ive just left them in there. should i keep them or replace them with something different.

hey, i was just reading an old post about running canister filters in series. i have two aqua one filters cf500 and cf700. would it be possible to do this with these filters as the flow rates are different? i want to run the cf500 fill of filter wool and use the cf700 fill of bio media. i would have the water flowing into the cf500 then to the cf700 and then back to the tank. would this work and would it be better than having the two filters set up seperatly? they are running on a 230l tank fill of african cichilds. also what kind of bio media does people recomened. ive been using some of the jbl ball things, called biomec or something. any help would be good thanks
