yeah i have two as well i love them, i have just setup my new 835l tank for them and plan on getting a couple more. i have a red o and a albino o but he has black tips on his fins. they are my fav fish at the mo, its like keeping small puppys in the tank heres my albino o, sorry dont have any of my black one. i dont know how to sex them but there is quite alot of differences between my two. the shape of the head and fins are quite different

yeah i have kept my guppies without a heater, and with out filters and bubbles too

i have always used warm water out out of the tap with out problems. some people get big plastic containers and fill these up with water and have a heater running in there with an air stone and after 24hours or so the cholrine evaperates. this is called ageing the water. i think im going to start doing it this way as its cheap than buying decholrineaters and will be the same temp as the fishtank there for there shouldnt be any temp flux. you can also have a pump in there with a hose on it running into you fish tank so once youve syhponed the water just plug in the pump and watch it fill up, no more buckets :bounce:

yay i started to cycle my sump today. i have just got the pump running in a cirlce back to the start of the sump. i have 4 650 gm packs of jbl micro mec and a small pack of noodles to start. im making my stand this week coming and just wondering if the thickness of the poly between the tank and stand has to be "so thick" for the size of the tank, ive got some but its only 1 inch thick will this be ok??

bart687 is live in nelson 2. ive just made my own glass tank and costed me $300 for the glass(from a glass company). if you go to petznall they will do water tests for you and will only cost $2 i think. i would agree with everyone else those tanks are quite small for you fish. i have also had a 230l glass tank made by palace aquatics too for $200. hope this helps.

i live in nelson and its so hard to get good products and fish. there is two shops one is small and only have a few tanks but have quite good fish in sometimes but theyre really expencive and they have really poor water conditions the other shop is ok but they dont have much products like seachem ect that im afta. there prices are ok tho. and they only stock the standard fish eg tetras and livebearers. i do most of my shoping off the trademe and i got just about all my africans from the net to as i have never seen one in nelson for sale there was a really good place that has been shut for a few months now as it was run out of his gargae and hes looking for a new bigger place for his shop. he quite often had a good fish selection(cichilds too) and product range. i would love to go up north and go shopping in some of the shops i hear about (would need a large buget tho  )

nah hes just going in there to grow because if i put him in my big tank with my other fish theyll eat him thanks, that is what i wanted to know about tank size and stunting so is stunting permanent??
-
try and buy the fish you plan to put in the tank as babys and add them in one go, as this will make them more compatible with each other.
-
thanks for all the help. JD's eating just about anything i have tryed feeding him so far is the 70l tank going to stunt him in anyway? herefishiefishie, yes i use purgien in all of my big tanks and love it. it makes the water so much clearer and keeps it that way i would recommend it to all! the only problem is that it exhausts a lot faster than what it says(probally due to me over feeding tho) only lasts about 1-2 months also a bit of a pain to regenerate it as none of the shops around here stock prime is there any other way to do it? use bleach and then leave it in the sun for a few days to let the bleach evaporate?? ive just ordered 2x 250ml purgien for my new big tank 8) so is there anyway of telling if my kenyis are goin to turn male?

yeah its only like $30 for a 300w

wow just had a look at your 4ft Cichlids tank HummingBird nice do you have trouble with the plants and the o's. ryanjury, one of them is a bit bigger than the other one and one displays its blue strips more offten than the other one.
-
its for my new tank thats not setup yet http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/americ ... 14627.html the fish list is slowly growing
-
yeah but im trying to reduce the matinance on my tanks as water changes are rather effort based on 7 tanks and dont they have far more surface area on them, therefor more area for bacteria?
-
well if you have a m and f then its just a matter of time (and not much) i have two small cons (7cm) in my tank and they just about always have eggs or baby. im so sick of it now because they get so agro and fight everyone. if i see eggs i try and destroy them (i feel bad every time) and if babys then i try syhon them up with the gravel cleaner. looks like im going to have to grow up another m or f to have just the same sex in the tank

hey, #1 ive just brought a new jack dempcey and hes really small, my other one will eat him without a problem. so i have set up a 70l tank with a aqua clear 500 hob filter and heater. now i also have a blue acara in there to that is a bit biger that i would like to grow out too. how can i get them to grow really fast. i have been changing 2 buckets of water every secound day. is this a good idea, what is a good temp for this and what would be the best food of growth rate in these little guys? is the 70l tank to small to make them grow fast? they are about 5-7cm. #2 is there any way to sex oscars? i have read that when they get really full from scoffing there faces in the male there gutt will stick out funnyer from his sex orgains? is this tru? #3 is it possible to "de sex" convicts? i really would like to have a m and f in my tank but they just about allways have eggs/babys and are really agro. #4 can you get this in nz http://www.seachem.com/products/product ... trate.html or http://www.seachem.com/products/product ... atrix.html i have asked out my lfs but they are useless and carnt get anything. #5 i brought 2 kenyi a couple of months off trademe, they are quite small still about 6cm. when i got them i asked if they could be m/f and they said that would be fine, but they are both still blue is there anyway that they can be sexed before they have coloured up? and how big should they be untill they start to colour up if male? any help would be good thanks!
-
i dont think that they would be under any extra stress. they have a way over filtered tank and heaps of hidey holes and good water quality. if there was all female or males could this cause the fade? other wise then they must just be dull ones. what is the easyest way to gaurantee the sex of them? and what is needed to make them breed as i have had them for about 1 year now with no sign of breeding, i keep reading that they easy to breed
-
omg nah mine arnt that bad mine are just white on the bottom of them. i have a coral sand substrate. but they have been in differnent tanks with darker substrates with no change. i didnt buy them from a shop i got given them off someone that had bred them local. what is some good colouring food. im using jbl novo rift, novo vert and another spirilina flake. the black marks on there fins are quite fadded too but they do flash the black somethimes thanks for the help!
-
yes there is a white tube and a blue tube running the hole length of the tank. could this be too bright?
-
hey, in my 230l tank i have a few differnent africans in there. i have 4 electric yellows , the problem is that they arnt very yellow its really washed out white. im pretty sure that when i got them the were bright yellow but have faded. im not sure if they are male or female or if that makes a differnce. the pH is 8.3, kh is 12dkh and gh is 14dgh there is plenty of hidey hole ect. i feed them novo rift and a few other green flakes. they have been like this for ages too. can someone please help.
-
i would recomened that you get some aqua one cf range of canisters. i have a cf500 and a cf700 on my 230l mbuna tank. the filters are really quite, easy to restart after water changes, have lot of room for media and are cheap to buy. my water is crystal clear too. heres a link to some for sale on trade me: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pe ... 513308.htm that ones 1000lph and is only $130 and they have the filter media in them.
-
i recken that you should put your new filters on an old tank thats been running for a while and maybe even put some noodles or other bio media into the new filter from the existing filter. i dont think that adding old water helps that much, the bacteria that your after in your filters isnt a waterborn bacteria (it sits on things like gravel, filters and ornaments) therefore there wouldnt be jack all bacteria in the water, could be wrong tho someone else should know. what kind of filter are you going to be using.
-
hey, ive just being reading about your tank, and was wondering if the reverse under gravel filter is working very well. im in the process of setting up my new tank and was looking at doing something like this but wasnt sure if it would work very well? oh and i love the tank!!!
-
well yeah that would be nice but would cost a lot more than what a second hand reinforced table would cost well im going to order my glass for the sump tomoro now i thought that i would just run my plans past everyone. its going to measure: 1200lx500wx500h (mm) its goin to look like this: i realise that there wont be much pressure in the spray bar part but i plan on drilling 10 6mm holes in it which will flow more than enough water through it with out it backing up to the tank. if anyone has got any ideas or tips, or can see any floors in the plan LET ME KNOW please
-
yeah i was planning to brace it with a whole lot of 4x2 or something then the sump will have plenty of room underneath and then ill put a curtain or something around it.
