  1. I had them while they were small with that giant sword plant (rocks around it to keep it in place) and they still dug all the roots up around the area outside the rocks. I think when they're big they'd make too much of a mess. But I'm no expert, it sure would look awesome.
  2. Nice job. This is going to be an awesome tank!
  3. With the price of excel and the size of your tank maybe you could run a couple of big DIY CO2 units until you have saved for a pressurized unit? You can get a cheap regulator off ebay for around NZ$100, and a bottle for around $200. I think before too long you would have recovered the costs that you would be spending on the excel. Just a thought.
  4. 2L is $120 I think, I have one and it's well worth it if you use a lot
  5. $1ea on trademe, lots of 20, 10 etc sell really well.
  6. How tall do the leopards get? May require some
  7. oooh 2nd and 3rd to last pics. Looks really good in that back corner
  8. Might have to go take a trip to Mitre 10 Mega, I have been using the cheapies from the Warehouse so far.
  9. $400 for that size tank is a major rip-off. I would think around $150 with normal glass. I agree with everyone else, don't bother with optiwhite. Are you going through a glazier? If your folks are paying for it they will love you more to find the tank is 2/3rds cheaper, and if you are paying for it you can spend the extra on other stuff as Ryan said. To be honest I doubt you'd be able to notice the difference except for the ends. Have you ever seen an optiwhite tank in real life? I wouldn't get hung up on the whole "optiwhite" fad. My tank is 10mm with crappy green glass and it's clear as.
  10. I think I will replace the bulb in the right light. But here's a few more pics as it's nice to see a bit of progress. The red barclaya is finally starting to come back after near-fully melting after it went in. Only took 2 months... And some close-ups: Hemianthus micranthemoides, one of my favourites in a big clump. Ludwigia glandulosa, just starting to get a nice red-purple colour Rotala macrandra Apparently my flatmates sat for 3 1/2 hours the other night watching the discus laying so I'm happy I'm not the only one that enjoys it For anyone interested (I know I am with other people's setups) this tank has cost me about $2-2.5k with doing a few things cheaply (lights, filters).
  11. Nice one David, you've done really well! Simple and so very effective
  12. looking good matt. You could fill the whole tank with water and give mr amano a run for his money
  13. Don't think they were dark. My daphnia culture has died off over summer, maybe temps getting too high. Ton of blackworms in the substrate of the pond though
  14. what's the flow rate on it?
  15. Yea I used to see stick insects all the time when I was in primary school, only ever see them if I really have a hunt now (even less down in chch).
  16. Redwoods had cf series canisters for cheap. I got two 1200s for $295 a while ago so you could see if their special is still going.
  17. I agree with you there, they should know what they're selling, or at least try to find out. Phoenix, they're not saying they want the proper strain (would be great if they could), they just want to know what their discus will eventually look like ie blue, red or yellow with green squiggles or red dots.
  18. Mine had a bit of trouble getting back in last time so I bashed them a bit, didn't take much but works fine now
  19. Black Sabbath - I won't cry for you not the sabbath, but still good 8)
