  1. How big is the tank? And how many hiding places do you have? Unfortunately it is just what male apistos do they are nasty to females, if you think that is nasty you should see how the female gets when she lays Sometimes adding dither fish like guppies or danios or something like that for them to take their agro out on can help, otherwise a descent sized tank and lots of hiding places, separating them if she is getting injured.
  2. I have no idea but tons came up on google.. http://www.google.co.nz/#q=how+to+becom ... bfd132843d I think most say contact your local zoo and go from there
  3. Pretty sure that canisters actually operate with no head height as the added pressure of the siphon into the filter is equal to the pressure it takes the filter to push the water out.. Regardless as Ira has said it has an effective rating of 500LPH so I would be expecting something around there from it. I would start with process of elimination, check that you get a good siphon through the inlet and outlet hoses (shows they aren't blocked) then check you get a good siphon through the filter (outlet disconnected -this will make a mess) to ensure no blockages in the filter. If there are no blockages then it is a pumping type issue so I would take it all apart and make sure it is assembled correctly. I have recently brought quite a few second hand filters and I have found most of them are put together wrong with impeller shafts installed at random angles (which has destroyed the impellers and shafts), bits of rubber that hold impeller shafts central missing etc.
  4. Definitely 1 fish per bag for fish that size.. And the heatpads that heat to 50C are fine, they are not going to provide enough heat to actually heat the water they are just going to take the chill off the air and hopefully maintain the temp of the water and inside the box.
  5. I have done it with siphon based ones on a bank of 2fters and it worked ok, as livingart has suggested there is some risk involved with it as siphons are more likely to block up or stop than a hole drilled in the glass but it can be done, I ran 2 overflows on each tank to make sure it had redundancy.
  6. You can do this with siphon overflows too But it is not good for higher flow applications.
  7. Yeah vinegar is pretty harmless probably alot better for you than formalin or any of the other meds we use The theory is to use the bleach rinse it out a few times then if it still smells like bleach then add some vinegar..
  8. Bleach also works, use pure bleach (none of the fancy smelly stuff) and rinse it a few times then it can be neutralised with vinegar..
  9. That is awesome A true aquatic paradise, well done!
  10. It is also confusing because the honey gouramis are dwarfs and females come in for them all the time It is the neon blues/reds that seem to have the issues with girls! Heres hoping that person has a female of one of them..
  11. Females are in high demand but I have heard they don't usually import them as they get egg bound and die easily in quarantine. This can cause issues/costs for importers who have to declare all losses to MAF and MAF can order them to have tests conducted to determine the cause and confirm they are not carrying diseases which can cost the importer thousands of $$..
  12. Sorry to hear about this Caryl I am hoping it is not for your sake, but have you considered columnaris? http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/c ... isease.php
  13. They are from the same family and I know I had discounted getting them as I thought the empresses were nicer, but now think I might be changing my mind..
  14. That is very cool, nice pics
  15. Don't want to take the thread off topic too far, but all of those who are after cockatoos should pm bilbo as he has a tank filled with some that he bred that will be coming up for sale soon
  16. Breed something you like If you want something people will always want then make sure you breed something peaceful and community like..
  17. But probably more than sufficient for a 30L tank with regular water changes
  18. Gutted It is really hard to place blame on the stores though, especially if the fish did look healthy to begin with and continued to do so throughout your 2 week quarantine.. I have heard alot of mollies are kept in hard water with salt throughout the quarantine/wholesale period so when moved into different conditions do tend to suffer. Generally most of the mollies I have seen in stores are quite sad looking things most have clamped up tails and are really skinny so I am unsure what is going on there it is very hard to tell. Also regarding the poor advice with meds diagnosing fish is very difficult at the best of times the staff probably have little knowledge and didn't actually get to view the fish.. Even if they had suspected worms the drugs to treat them are prescription only (HFF are lucky they have somehow got them and they are able to dispense them) so they cannot really give you anything to help. Now you can see why some people run quarantine/treatment tanks (treating for worms and other things even if the fish show no signs) before introducing anything into their tanks, but you do have to ask how far do you go?
  19. Try the beaches for wood pick heavier darker pieces.. Plants I would wait for supasi or phoenix to comment both of them are local and in the club and could probably help you out in that department..
  20. I would challenge you to do it if it is that cheap Hans (who is the seller) measures it out right and has been doing it for a while now, TBH it is already dirt cheap as Phoenix has said the amount you have quoted for is an awful lot of stuff, as it says it in the auction 100gms to 500mls of water and then 1-2drops per 40L so it will take a long time to even get through 100gms of the stuff.
  21. I would just buy the PMDD from the guys that make it, I do believe those ingredients are available from various places but I think you have to buy them in bulk which is quite expensive..
  22. Sounds like it is pretty hit and miss I think a 4ft would be ok but the fish would have to get along and you would have to be lucky, it sounds like a good thing that you might have sold them
  23. I have seen 2-3 pairs of angles happily living in a 250L tank that is quite a good sized tank.. The major issue will be introducing them in such a way that the new ones have a chance to claim a portion of the tank so each pair has its own space.
  24. What do you need urgently? I would start with java and anubais.. Try other plants and see how they go is pretty much the only way to do it..
  25. The might be alright in the 250L tank together, best bet is to rearrange the tank when you introduce them and introduce them at night so they have a chance to settle before the fighting starts. If you can stick a big landmark in the centre of the tank to create clear territories it might work out well too.
