  1. I wouldn't get rid of it, it looks like filter media that I have used before if you are worried just boil it before use and it should be fine. If you are worried it might alter PH or something just soak it in a bucket for a few days and measure the water to see if it has done anything.
  2. I would say a fungus or cotton mouth or columnaris, although it sounds nasty but considering the potential things that could be wrong and the cost of a neon I would put it out of its misery, do a water change keep things in top shape and hope that the other fish don't get it..
  3. It makes sense to spread the natives even outside NZ if need be.. They can then be recovered if anything happens or any new blood is needed for a breeding program etc.
  4. I have some stuff like that that is inert and is just another biomedia.. It does look a little rough to be limestone and too big/irregular to be a phosphate type remover..
  5. That does sound bizarre Phoenix I have never seen or heard of anything like that happening before. I also think it is bizarre that you had 6 males jump out all at the same time I haven't lost many apistos to jumping and all of a sudden you loose 6 overnight. So you are having all sorts of random stuff happen at your place! Danval that site is awesome aye There is some amazing fish being collected..
  6. I haven't bred loaches before but would expect loach fry to hang around the bottom of the tank not around the top like these guys seem to be. I would pick one of these guys neons, glowlights, diamond tetras or danios, the danios are the easiest to breed and the hardiest.. It will be interesting to see what they are as they grow, can you catch them and ensure their survival? Would be an interesting poll - Guess the fish
  7. lol good reminder Simon, I had forgotten already.. This will be my last meeting too And new pres will be voted in so hopefully enough people turn out!
  8. They will probably keep selling/making them as long as people buy them, most things come down to $$ and cents..

I think it is a waste of time and you have no evidence to say otherwise
  10. Could be belly sliders if they are sitting on the bottom and not feeding.. Jag fry should eat pretty much anything from day dot.
  11. What are you breeding? It could be what you are feeding, some fry are big enough to eat it and do well and some are starving..
  12. No reason not to do some dwarfs with some schooling fish
  13. Yeah they aren't actually that bad, can be terriotorial when breeding but I managed to breed mine (2-3yr old big pair) in a 45cm tank with guppies that didn't get harmed so I have found they aren't that nasty.. Pics of the parents of the young I have for sale are here - click to make it bigger.
  14. I spawn my pair of Jullies in a 2ft tank.
  15. I have a few of these left http://www.dwarfcichlid.com/Pelvicachro ... niatus.php that would love a tank like that!
  16. Gutted Phoenix I have had a few fish jump as well over the years, it does appear to happen when the fish are getting a hard time so maybe they were getting chased so much they pretty much had no option.. Looks like you didn't quite move them on in time Apist list is growing really well, I am of the same thoughts as Phoenix at this stage there is probably no real benefit to be gained by having a dedicated apisto club in NZ but I think an email list would be awesome. I will also start up a list of known species (and people keeping/breeding them with their permission) when I get around to it.
  17. Guppies are awesome you can get them in any colour they like Could also do platties or swordtails or something like that.. Maybe shellies if you could get a compatible pair..
  18. Unsure if there are enough to start a club at this stage but for the first hour or 2 of suggesting it there are a few Will see how it goes, I will send an email out to everyone on the list in a few days once there are a few more people on it..
  19. Email me your address Antwan and I will add you, I have had a few emails and pms so the list is actually growing quite well allot more interest that I thought there would be initially.. Have added you Jen (already added you anyway ) and you Kash
  20. Have added everyone who wanted to be added, at the moment there are only 4 people on it though so if anyone else is interested just message me or email me and I will get it sorted.. Mark I have some steel blues but still too young to tell if they are males or females..
  21. Indian fern will very quickly cover the top of the tank and do the job..
  22. Yeah it would be hard to waterproof, if it was me I would take it apart and disconnect it and make it safe I wouldn't have a tank with really good high lighting pay the power to run it and wear out good tubes to grow floating plants, but that is just me.
