  1. I am not in Palmy but didn't feel anything here in Bulls..
  2. Yeah you would have to be smart in a power cut, hopefully all the tanks are in the same place and you can run gas or a 1kw heater to keep things warm then you would have another 1kw to run filters etc.. Marine tanks would be a huge drain on them and unfortunately bigger generators cost a bomb! Trademe is another place to check out..
  3. I guess it depends what you want and what you have to spend If it was for the odd emergency (like what you guys have just had) where it will only be running a few things for a day or 2 then I would buy a cheapy as they will be fine, but if it was to run alot then I would buy a more expensive one. Also add up the loads you plan to run off it and work out how big you need it to be.. ie a 2kw one would be able to power 10 200W heaters (obviously if they all happened to turn on at the same time which is unlikely happen). Mind you in an emergency you would probably use a gas heater or small electric heater off the gen to heat the room and then use the gen to keep filtration going.
  4. I gave a mate some small angel (on the proviso that even though he liked them he would rehome them or the tetras before the got big) and heap of tetras, WCMM, swordtails silvertips etc and all he ended up with was one big angel it killed/ate everything else it could.
  5. Yep angels for sure they are known to eat tetras and guppies and well anything they can fit (or try to fit) in their mouths, they are actually not that angelic really..
  6. Tetras are pretty good at zipping in and eating a few tiny apisto babies at times, as are most fish.. If you want some to survive then best to put them in their own tank, or remove all other fish after they have laid, either that or the parents are eating them..
  7. Now that you mention it a few of my tanks are green at the moment (feeding a high phosphate food + lots of africans leads to algae galore) Bilbo come over and grab some

    Fluval 404

Remove the top and lube the big o ring with silicon grease same with the 2 o-rings on the inlet/outlet quick release..
  9. How big is your tank? Empresses or kadangos would be a good mix but they are both relatively late bloomers, you could try maleri reds but they wont go well with that many big aggressive mbuna in there..
  10. I ship with the palmy branch of NZ couriers and they are great for me and have never lost a package or mucked me around What are you shipping and where to?
  11. Someone will order them in, they are cool they are the closest thing you can get to a piranha.. There was a listing for 2 massive ones in a 150 all in one tank on trademe a while back apparently sold by the local animates so it does happen
  12. Awesome I wonder how many of them are going to end up being sold to go in 100L tanks
  13. escargot shells.. From a craft shop or from a french restaurant..
  14. A friend of mine who was a professional carpet cleaner said people cause damage to their carpets using rug doctors because they get it quite wet and often it doesn't dry out, he says this is usually because people get carried away and do it twice so I don't know if it would help in this situation it may add more moisture. Is there away to use it as a wet/dry vac and try and suck out the water.. Another thing to consider is adding heat and air movement with some big fans and stuff, also lift the carpet if you can.. Whenever I flood my fishroom I lift the carpet and stick a fan on and it dries it really fast.
  15. Yeah they breed like mad, I have lost a few spawns from my pair and still have around 60-70 from from one pair.. It is a good thing though hopefully this means this is one fish we wont loose in NZ, breed the snot out of them they are one I want to always be around..
  16. Sounds like stress to me.. My ones do it for an hour or so following a water change (cold straight from the tap) and then come right, they did it for a day or so when I first got them too but it should pass really quickly.. I have found the shellies to be exceptionally hardy, even the fry, I tip them from tank to tank different temps and probably slightly different parameters and I am still yet to loose one so this is really confusing for me. The only possible thing I can think of is the fish are just spooked and stressed from the quake and then aftershocks, no fish likes their house being shaken up. I would feed some of their fav food (some grindals if you have them mine go nuts for them) and/or add some schooling fish (I have rosy barbs with mine) to give them some confidence and see if that helps.. Hope they pick up soon!
  17. They are easy to breed, probably the best way to find out how is to google it.. You will find all the info that you require and photos etc. Look up how how to use marbles to protect the eggs and also how to breed them in a net.
  18. I have some like the ones in this thread which I am assuming are the same thing? viewtopic.php?f=12&t=32082
  19. Here are some links http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/l_ocellatus.php http://www.google.co.nz/#hl=en&q=Lampro ... 54220269c3 There is tons and tons of info on these guys on the net.. I kept my pair in a 75cm tank with some tropheus and they went well in there, the internet recommends a 60L tank min for a pair.
  20. lol At least you aren't wet/dry vacuuming manky fish water out of your lounge/house like people in Christchruch probably are today
  21. It depends on your police and the amount you are claiming etc.. Most insurance companies like to see proof of purchase etc but if you have a broken TV sitting there they cannot say you don't have one and not pay out Alot of insurance companies have different policies on paying out on older stuff too, some are replacement new for old (regardless of age) and some are market value after a certain age (I think 8yrs rings a bell). Also not sure about earthquake cover?
  22. I agree, gutted about the fish but as long as everyone is ok fish can be replaced.. I know it is no consolation but you don't need to worry about shellies when you are ready for some more there are some here with your name on them
  23. Awesome good work she looks awesome..
  24. You know where they are if you want any I have 4 batches on the go at the moment. Could do a nice swap with you for some of those fancy agassizi you have
