  1. My advice would be to nab some fry asap.. There seems to be some curse around with apistos in NZ where they only tend to breed once and then loose the parents, they parents usually end up eating the fry and then you are stuck with nothing, always best to nab a few fry so you at least have some chance of keeping them ticking over.
  2. We are allowed Pelvicachromis taeniatus and Pelvicachromis pulcher into the country so that is all you will probably find.. Pelvicachromis taeniatusis probably the rarest you will find but you can find plenty of different pulchers around some of them are amazing, you can also get albino or golden pulchers.
  3. GST increase will mean that the people who spend more will pay more than the tax cut..
  4. Awesome pic and fish As Nav has said the kribs do show some variation in colour. The mother of these fish was imported as a "nigerian red" and the father was imported as a "moliwe". I noticed this variation when I got them and asked a question on a dwarf cichlid forum and a guy that has collected and catalogued these from the wild commented and said neither nigerian red or moliwe was correct however they were pure Pelvicachromis taeniatus and to breed the fish with the most desirable traits together and call them Pelvicachromis taeniatus "tank strain". Also the fry will show variation based on dominance etc.
  5. There might be a pair or 2 spare when I am up there and settled get in touch Unfortunately my big male has just carked it so need to keep back some fry to get another male.. Pelvicachromis taeniatus are on the allowed import list so it is possible that all sorts of strains could make it into the country. I have had ids done on my ones by someone who knows his kribs (Ted Judy) and he has suggested mine are just what you would call "tank strain" so of no particular strain but still pure Pelvicachromis taeniatus.
  6. Awesome good work Now what to do with them, do you plan on stealing fry/wrigglers asap? Just in case you are bitten by the apisto one spawn curse..
  7. Petrol is going up 7c/L tomorrow too so gas up your cars tonight..
  8. They are almost identical to the Pelvicachromis taeniatus that I have been breeding/selling..
  9. I always thought there was no point in adding CO2 and then adding an airstone?
  10. I am going from Auckland to Bulls this weekend and can bring them back to here if you arrange it.. Also have those other fish we talked about if you wanted them too
  11. Happy birthday to Grant and his dad Good to see Grants dad likes MX5s too...
  12. Also forgot to say sorry for your loss But glad to hear that you may have a spawn already!
  13. Usually a really good sign is the change in colour coupled with the fish hiding and going really skinny/aggressive..
  14. I can give you a male or 2 if you need one?
  15. Depends what type of worms of course so some more questions would probably help.. Prazi will only work against certain types..
  16. Any red things hanging out the fishes bum?
  17. I have to agree, just keep feeding variety (bar their fav food) until they eat they will get over it Variety is the spice of life and bloodworms should only be occasional treats..
  18. They are not going to get along so well together so it wont really be fair on either pay regardless of how pretty they are.. I wouldn't try it in less than 3ft tank?
  19. I wouldn't do it you already have one nice pair that is happy and have their own tank why not just enjoy them?
  20. Well done that is an awesome batch size for your first go!
  21. It is debatable in fish, someone once put it "it is called line breeding when it goes well and inbreeding when it goes bad". You are never going to get any better fish if you keep breeding within the same gene pool, and it can eventually cause issues. No doubt 99% of the fish we get in NZ have been inbred for many generations most fish farms overseas wont really care about inbreeding or any of that (until it results in less fish being produced or getting to sellable size). I would continue to breed but if you are noticing large numbers of deformed fry or things going wrong/really weak fish or anything like that then it would be time to investigate or try and find new blood. There was a perfect female here that was double red x wild that would be brilliant for introducing new blood into this line.
  22. Oi leave my tank alone That is a beauty, wonder how scratched it would be having been used at the zoo though.. If you only have 1.7m then it would be good to run a 6m length of tanks down one side you could fit ALOT of tanks in there and depending on how high you wanted to go you can go at least 3 high maybe even 4 high with some of them. I found major heat losses came through the floor so ran carpet and underlay in my fishroom it made it far warmer but then it was a pain when it got wet so consider what you might want to do there before you put tanks in. Also I have seen a few fish rooms well made using heavy duty brackets that bolt to the walls, this looks really tidy and keeps stands off the floor so gives you more floor space etc.
  23. Sounds good Just plan everything really well before you do anything. The more insulation you put in and the more you draft proof it etc then the more efficient it will be. Also think of things like what you are going to stick on the floor (assuming you have a concrete floor) and think of locating a drain/water supply before you stick tanks in there. It is a shame you aren't closer I am tearing all my poly out of my room soon you could have had that to get you started it is all fireproof stuff to.
  24. lol maybe you guys can work together on this one viewtopic.php?f=12&t=48398
  25. If you add a really big HOB filter it blows it all around the tank and eventually gets it all sucked into filters that coupled with fish that eat it will get rid of it eventually. It is amazing how people can sell this stuff! lol
