  1. I kept a half dozen baby flounder for a couple of years then it got too hot and they croaked. I don't know which type they were but hooked them out of the South branch of the Waimakariri (behind the belfast pub when getting blackworms from the outlet of the belfast freezing works). That discharge and the blackworms with it have now gone of course. They were fascinating critters---stick to the sides of the tank like suckers. They were in fresh water so assume blacks.
  2. I always worked on having the greatest volume of water that you can conveniently work with and that becomes you heat store. There is definately an economy of scale with breeding and quarantine so the more fish you can breed and raise and the more you can import the better. It costs the same to raise 100 fish as a thousand pretty much. When the place is loaded with fish you will find the air becomes fouled and you will need to flush the air from the room periodically or it becomes hard work just being there. The heat is in the water and it takes little heat to reheat the air.
  3. I think you are better to bring the air from outside so it is fresh. The amount of heat stored in air is minimal compared to the amount in the water.
  4. I found that a low pressure high volume pump was best as you want a lot of air but only at a moderate pressure. I still have the pump that I used for about 60 tanks. It is a "woble"---I think that is how you spell it. It was very good but noisy. I put it in a noise proofing box in the garage next door to the shed. You may find the MPI require a completely seperate air pump for quarantine.
  5. There are some introduced fish in lake ellesmere (Te Waihora) including catfish. I can't remember the guy's name but there is a pest officer at Ecan who had all the info.
  6. It can be very hard on people coming here from countries where you can own just about any pet you fancy. I met a family from England that had to leave their tortoises behind, from the USA where they had a zoo by our standards, and Asia where pretty much anything goes. It would be hard to see the restrictions here. Thems the breaks---lots of other things to compensate.
  7. You are not allowed to import any reptiles---even the ones you are allowed to keep such as bearded dragons etc.
  8. That will punch out some serious light. Love the earthquake proofing on the tank.
  9. They usually do antibiotic resistance along with the serotyping to get a good ID of the strain.
  10. I don't know about your fish but some are very good at sucking baby fish out of breeding nets.
  11. When Heidi was doing her research I think beardies came out with more salmonella than turtles. I investigated a salmonella case years ago contracted from native lizards on one of the walking tracks on the west coast and it was St Paul if I remember correctly. That was just for the autopsy but $199 was for virology that proved nothing. Aparently the problem I had does not happen in wild populations so I am trying to find out more. Salmonella in reptiles can be sub clinical and intermitant (which means a negative test does not mean they have not got it---you would need a lot of tests to be sure). Also they can carry it without symptoms (asymptomatic). Doctors don't normally prescribe antibiotics in humans as it can often make things worse. They would give really heavy doses of realy heavy meds if needed. Not sure about vets.
  12. chasing the balance is hard but chasing the tank is even harder.
  13. Got the bill from the vet today---$278. Results as stated earlier but infection also caused a blood clot which stopped bloodflow to the heart. Aparently this does not happen in the wild so still working on what we can do to improve the way we are looking after them.
  14. Didn't notice much difference down this way.
  15. Sunlight is the best light but it needs to be through the top.You also need to get the balance of ferts and light right which is not easy when the light is inconsistant. I know a guy who grows plants very well with a mixture of sunlight and flouros from above but you have to chase it all the time.
  16. Easy. Feed them microworm and brine shrimp nuplii in a bare tank. Do frequent water changes depending on the size of the tank.
  17. Some of my best friends are fairies.
  18. As a non chritian I am not in the least offended by people talking about god, fairies or saints.
  19. Females are not nutters, they just come from a different planet (venus). You don't need to understand them you only need to know how to say "yes dear". You need to be a bit choosey with your words because god is a woman and has a lot of lightning bolts.
  20. Funny who we end up close to. One of my best friends was brought up as a Jehovah's witness and another is a bishop in the morman church.
  21. I had an aunty who was a member of the club. Our family was invited for dinner once and they were kind enough to cook a roast but it was about enough for one member of our family of six. My mother talked about it for years, but at least they tried.
  22. There is a piece of legislation called the food regulations. Various foods in there are defined. If it is not called nougat it means it does not comply with the requirements so cannot be called that. If it is called iced confection it is not icecream . If it is called fruit drink it is not fruit juice (though it may contain some). It pays to read the label.
  23. Commercially it is usually grown emersed so will need to convert to submersed growth. This may mean that the new growth is doing OK but the old plants are not doing so well. If you spread the plants out they will get more light, which helps, and you can remove the old plants later if they look a bit rough.
  24. I would go a bit easy on the ferts and lights until you see the plants are established and propagating. They will not need a lot of light or use a lot of ferts until they get their roots established. If you get too keen you could have problems with algae.
