  1. My apologies it is riccia (amongst other things)
  2. Don't think it is riccia, more likely a fern like Jave moss. There are some overseas which we don't have here.
  3. I plan on getting old, wrinkly and ugly without tats but everyone to their own. I have to admit that the guy with 27 piecings on his face I had to deal with was a bit hard to look in the eye.
  4. They don't need to be absolute blackout but very low light which means "no peeping"
  5. It could be a different dialect.
  6. I hope I haven't offended anyone from Outer Mongolia.
  7. You are also dealing with diseases and problems that you don't normally come across when a hobyist because the importers have hopefully sorted it by the time it gets to the shops.
  8. Having bred fish commercially and imported I can sympathise. The number of people who come around to find out what you are doing, talk for hours and buy little is astonishing. That is why after a very short time I did not sell fom home but only to shops and wholesalers. They don't want to know how you do it, only that you have it when they want it (which can also be a challenge) We used to supply shops with oxygen weed and tubifex but trust me it was secret squirel.
  9. Rainwater with a bit of peat or oak leaves added (boil in a bit of water and add. Soft, acid and goodies-- like the creeks on the west coast of the SI.
  10. What did you treat with. If you used furan you need to treat 4 times.
  11. You have to get the proposed building certified by maf. It has to be a seperate facility and have an anteroom. It has to have the approval of the Local Authority which means it will need to comply with the Resource Management Act (Comply with the District Plan or have a Resource Consent) It needs to be gazetted. You will need heaps of money to pay for all the inspections and approvals before you get to the paying for importation bit. The approval regime has recently changed and I have spoken to 3 importers in Chrischurch who have had a lot of difficulty getting approval to continue. These were people previously importing. Nothing to lose by enquiring and only money to lose by doing. I have a tee shirt I have no further use for (joking)
  12. It is coing to the collection time for oak leaves from Hagley park. They are the best I think. but should be used when the sap has retreated and they have been shed and dried.
  13. How and why would I ignore you. If it was a wee while ago it might still be with the computer that chucked a wabble and got chucked out. Please send again and see if the new one is a bit more friendly.
  14. Microworm is realy easy to culture: Rough the sides of a 2 litre icecream container with sandpaper. Put wolemeal porridge and a teaspoon of sugar in the coffee grinder when the boss is away. Grind fine add water and cook 2 mins in microwave. Make it so it is that thick you have to spread it with a wet spoon until bottom of container is covered. Allow to cool and sprinkle with a small amount of yeast. Mix starter with a little water and run around porridge till covered. Light candles and play soft music for a few days. Use a stiff kids paint brush to scrape off the walls and wash into a glass of water Feed out with an eye dropper It will last longer (6 weeks) if you remove them each day other wise they multoply to the extent they kill themselves off. I keep 4 at various stages all the time.

If you do regular water changes you will keep the water reasonably stable which is more important than it being up or down. That will also remove any staining from the wood.
  16. When I was importing they were listed in the gazette, so I would think they still are. The maf should know and may let you know. (If they don't think it is secret squirel)
  17. I wouldn't believe everthing you find on the internet. Contrary to popular belief Mrs Google is not God's Mother in Law. Killies prefer lower temperatures and discus higher temperatures. I wouldn't put them together. I put male killies in a well planted community tank with some snail and algae eaters and they do well at about 22-23 deg C. (and so do the plants). I would want to keep discus warmer than that.
  18. I have not come accross either.
  19. With only one fish you shouldn't need a filter. I would use furan 2 with 4 doses as per instructions. You would only need one capsule, divide it carefully and follow instructions. Don't feed
  20. Snail rid is copper sulphate and you wont need it if you boil the gravel
  21. The eye is generally popped out with the pressure of gas behind from a bacterial infection which may have been started with injury.
