  1. It may well be. I don't know a lot about anubias.
  2. The bacteria that can be a problem in a hot water cylinder that is not hot enough is legionella which causes legionaires disease. It is generally inhaled in the shower and is a problem for humans not fish. Not using water from the hot water system is an urban myth and is as much of a problem as vampires.
  3. Is that cardboard or wood that the cups are in?
  4. There are others here better qualified thabn me---I am still trying to figure it out. Vermiculite is available from your garden nursary and pumice sand also. People seem to use either or both mixed.
  5. Peace lillies are often sold as aquatic plants.
  6. That would depend on how good it is and what sex.
  7. If I put the icecream ontainers straight onto the bottom of the tank will they climb up OK to lay eggs,.
  8. They are peace lillies are they not? If they are they will do a lot better growing out of the water as they are not realy aquatics.
  9. Standing gets rid of the free available chlorine but not the chloramines which are almost as bad. Monochloramine is used in the USA to sanitize drinking water rather than chlorine. The more you let your chlorinated water sit the more the chloramines will move from trichloramine through dichloramine to monochloramine. Monochloramine is what makes your eyes sore in an under chlorinated swimming pool and as a disinfectant in USA for drinking water so it can't be good for your fish.
  10. Cyano will always be there along with different types of algae and you can only avoid them being a problem by keeping your conditions as good as possible. Snails can be killed with snail rid (copper sulphate), pot. permangenate or alum
  11. I have been culturing locusts with mixed success but need some info. I have two only 600 x 600mm tanks with wooden lids and light bulbs keeping temperature around 30 deg C. I have disposable glasses set into icecream containers as a laying media and breed in one and hatch in the other. I have put wood shavings on the bottom of each tank to insulate and bring the floor up to level with the top of the icecream container. This seems to be creating moisture and I am wondering what others do. Should I go for bare tanks or use another media?
  12. Some crypts can grow very tall when emersed so make sure you put the big ones in the lowest partition. Looking good so far.
  13. Copper forms an amalgum with iron in the first 6 weeks of the life of the cylinder and pipes and this is more resistant to corrosion. The problem is that there is less iron in plumbing systems these days as the galvanised iron water mains and reticulation has been replaced with other materials. Everyone had a cast iron wet back once as well. This is why Local authorities are careul to keep the water slightly alkaline. If the copper was going into solution the hot water cylinder in our house would have alredy dissolved because it is the original from when the house was built in 1945.
  14. I don't know much about anubius but Bob Ward at Redwood Aquatics has a range of them. I understand they do not do well submersed and are grown emersed in a moist atmosphere.
  15. Fungus is an oportunistic infection that usually infects an existing bacterially infected wound. I would suggest treating with Furan 2 as it should cure both.
  16. Your first priority is to insulate the hell out of your fishroom. I used to heat 50-60 tanks with a 1kW heater which hardly ever went. I have seen lots of people get all enthusiastic and get heaps of tanks set up until they get a couple of power bills then they are out of the hobby.
  17. Rapid changes in temperature, hardness or pH stress fish and are often the cause of outbreaks of diseases like white spot. I have a set up where I blend hot and cold to about the same in the tank and can then often do very big water changes. Temperature is however only one of the factors it is best not to change too rapidly so the size of the water change usually equates to the frequency. If I have been a bit slack with water changes I usually do a number of smaller changes to catch up.
  18. Cloudy ammonia is not pure ammonia. I think ammonia, dead shrimps and all that is rubbish. Why not do what worked for grandad and just add fish slowly. That way the cycling bacteria are multiplying to form equilibrium with the actual load from the actual fish.
  19. If you don't label it or tell them they will not know or therefore worry.
  20. They are called organic because they are spray free---otherwise they would be dead. It also depends a lot on what kind of cockroaches they are.
  21. Austrolebias nigripinnis - go killies
  22. Phil- If yours are F1 from wild stock they must have been imported or you caught them in the Wikato river, therefore imported stock does breed. They never have been prolific breeders.
  23. There is a limited market for marines but most people will be interesed in a very good product at a very good price. The hardest thing is for you to be able to do that and beat people who have been doing it for many years. Things are usually expensive for a reason and if it was easy everyboby would be doing it.
  24. Roaches are very difficult to get rid of. The females carry the eggs behind them in a very well protected "safe" and if you kill the female the eggs are still viable. As well as that they are resistant to many insecticides. If you want to get rid of them you need to get in the pros.
