And it would have cost many times more than that to carry through the investigation and prosecution. Who would pay the thousands of dollars required to maintain those snakes in Quarantine?
Australia has a lot of very rare and unique reptiles and the risk to them from any disease carried by those animals is extreme. It is not easy to be 100% sure that a reptile is free of disease unless it is a dead sterile corpse.
You will need to make sure you get the right stuff. You may have to buy ammonia from the chemist as I think that from the supermarket may contain other additives. Also if buying bleach (chlorine soln.) from a swimming pool place you will need to make sure it is only chlorine and not mixed with cyanuric acid which is often added to protect from deterioration caused by sunlight. Straight bleach is usually about a 1-2% solution of HTH (high test hypochlorite) which releases 80% chlorine by weight. You could be sure by making your own solution from straight HTH. TREAT WITH RESPECT BECAUSE IT IS A STRONG OXIDISING AGENT.
That seems a lot---I only have one 4 foot tube in each of my 1600mm enclosures. That of course does not mean that the lights were the cause of the problem as it can just arise without any obvious cause.
I would set it up as you suggest but not add any liquid fertilizers until your plants get established and start using nutrient. This will be after the tank has cycled. You could cycle with 2-3 hardy fish like danios.
The best way to collect the fry is to siphon them up with a hose. If you put the outlet in a direction where they are not being smashed off the side of the bucket you can control the rate of flow in the hose by altering the height of the bucket. Four hands is usefull at this stage
Blue light tends to make the plants flower and grow compact while red tends to make them taller and skinnier. Plants need both and red does not penetrate water as well as blue. The growlux type tubes are designed for plant growth and produce both or you can use a lot of different combinations to get what you want. The T8s are cheaper and even cheaper still from an electrical wholesaler than a pet shop. You can buy 2nd hand but you will be better buying new tubes.
God had a twisted sense of humour when she created them. I prefer fire bellied newts as they go through that "ugly duckling" stage then get a lot better looking (but not white swans)
I used to breed heaps of Chinese quail and hatch them in incubators in big numbers. All quail are cute when small but not so when they start fighting over territory, mates etc. They can get pretty agro later on.
