  1. there are a couple in auckland, Have a look here for the addresses http://www.jansens.co.nz/ I'm a big fan of pupuke aquarium centre in birkenhead hillcrest area.
  2. I think the tank is looking great, well done.:bounce: I always thought angels and discus in the same tank was a big no no?
  3. Yeah, plumbing straight throught the top shelf.
  4. here is a bit of an idea about how it will look, think i might have a black calaco surround rather than wood.
  5. great, thanks for that shiuh. I think king 2 is the way to go, then i have a back up.
  6. In an eel tank for instance? yeah female bettas are much better, not as terratorial.
  7. 1. you may have problems if you have a male betta with guppys, esppecially if they have decent sized tails. 2. probably need a tank 600x300x300 with a filter and heater. 3. the guppys will bred like made if you give them the right conditions, bettas are much more complex and you would want to do alot of reading before giving this a go. (don't have a single female witha male) and neons are very hard to breed, not as hard as some fish but don't hold your breath. I've tried breed all three of these fish, lots of success with guppys, some with betta and non with neons. This is just from what i know, and from my experiances, other options my differ.
  8. I'm setting up a new tank. the aim is to have a 4x2x2 tank (feet). I'm going to have it as a planted community tank, with angels and gouramis. I'm planning on having a sump, mostly to keep pumps and filters and heaters etc out of the way, also may use it to grow some low lying plants dependant on final water turbulence. Plus the added bonus of extra water capacity. The sump is going to be just under 200L, 3ft long. (approx 620L all up) I'm just looking to buy a return pump(s). This is what i've been looking at; either two of these; http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=73965401 or one of these; http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=73648415 both are resun. I figure for $80 odd, it couldn't hurt to give them a go. a hell of alot cheaper than $200 for an second hand ehiem 1060. Has anyone had any experience with these? I'll post my progress here as the tank comes along.
  9. It was beyond aggressive and it is a reasionable heavily planted tank to I thought would be plenty in hide in. I sperated them in the same tank. It now appears from the behavior exhibiting that the are male and female. The female has become very large with eggs so I'm going to move them to another tank and see if they breed So all work out very well seeing as my male has recently died.
  10. One of my angels looks like they have swollowed a small marble. The area just infront of it's vent?? is every large. Could this be eggs? Or is it more sinister?
  11. The only thing is lots of places are marine reserves. I was at muriwai yesterday, found some really great stuff. Is it ok to use like takapuna water and collect from there. Or will the conditions be too different?
  12. Can anyone suggest a good local area to collect a bit of livestock from? I know taka is good for water, but what about livestock?
  13. I just put two female betta into the same tank and they just tore each other apart, is this common? I was thinking maybe getting another one, would this work. I thought this only happen when there was male in the tank.
  14. I'm having a similar thought, approx. 150L 3ft tank, was going to run a aquaclear 500, (serious overkill) and have it outside. I live fairly close to the harbour to the atmoshpere should be similar to taka rock pools. I figured outside the natural light would be heaps. more algae and more clean but heaps less money i.e. none
  15. mine don't get on with each other
  16. yeah, i remember seeing them when doing garden irrigation. I know there is also a filter specifically made for fish that takes out chlorine and other chemicals. Not sure what the name is though, or who makes them
  17. what about purifing the water before it goes in? bit of a cost i supose in getting the system, could even run the water through some larger, i.e. downpipe, inline with sponge in it, just to take that little bit of extra crap out of the water. Probably another $20 but could work well
  18. I would pick one species to start with and see how you go. danios, angels and black widows will be harder. I would prehaps start with platties as they are fairly easy to breed.
  19. danios can be quite hard to breed so i won't worry about it too much.
  20. I was thinking of running a few fans to cool them down. Is it not possibe to get different spectrum bulbs?
  21. That was one of the questions i got wrong for electeng, the flex colours, thats why i wasn't sure
  22. I disagree that if you don't know what your doing hen leave it alone. Snowman was correct for DC but just a bit off as the lighting will be running on AC therefore black is neutral not earth. If you don't know what your doing ask i reckon and that is the case here. Pegasus and Warren rather than suggesting he should fork out double what he paid for the light we could tell him the right way to do it the there would be no issue. The box is the Ballast (i think thats the term) it should have a wiring diagram on it somewhere. The red should be connect to the live terminal and the black to the neutral, there should be a earth out piut from the ballast, connect a wire from here to the earth. Are you wanting to connect it to the wiring in your ouse or to a plug to plug into the wall. The wiring in your house should be REd, blac and gree however the wiring in the flex running to the wall will be different colours. (someone correct me if the colour sceme is not right, and post the flex wiring colours) There is a standardised way of wiring in NZ so have a look on the net and see what you can find and read, this will help you understand it all as well. p.s. You cannot always assume the light was wired correct so red may be neutral and black may be live however this is unlikely. Anymore questions fell free to post and i'll help as much as possible
  23. I understand halogen lights can give out large amounts of heat however has anyone tried using these? Any success? What are the issues around using them? Looking at using one on my planted tank.
