  1. the sharp edges shouldn't matter too much should they? Considering the chip is alreay on the edge? I would think it would disperse stress concentrations from the edge rather than create more. Not sure if resin sticks to float glass but may give a more transparent look than silicone. (it should stick considering fibre glass)
  2. are the first two photos of the same chip? I can't really tell what size the first one is if they're not.
  3. both the males in my tanks seem to like it in the overflow compartment, a rather confined space with no where to hide abd they get on fine. Doesn't help you at all but thought I'd share none the less
  4. I'd say it would be fine. how big is the tank though? could you fill it outside first? I doubt it would effect it really, my sump tank has quite a few chips in it.
  5. Anyone have a heap of cuttings they would like to get rid of?
  6. I'll probably buy more once i start on the PMDD. Just figure it would be a waste to have them all covered in hair algae.
  7. Have you experianced similar results to those in the article/paper?
  8. As far as i've read, most algaes thrive on an excess of phosphate, undebated by most. PMDD contains no phosphate. So by providing excess of the other nutrients, ie nitrogen, potassium, iron, magnessium, the plants will use almost all available phosphate, efficently make it the limiting factor. And reducing algae growth I believe PMDD's origins are here
  9. I fair bit later and the tank is going ok, has been set up for about 12 weeks now. Have a bit of a hair algae problem, hopefully when i start using PMDD it will reduce it, as has been suggestd will happen in articles i've read. left hand end Right hand end End on view Have just done a bit of work, algae removal etc so a bit f floating c*** clouding the water in the photos. Any comments would be apprecated, good or bad. Not quite there yet, still waiting for plants to fill out and really want to get rid of the algae
  10. I would say that would be fine, you may want to put a sheet of wood - pine or mdf etc- ontop to increase the stiffness a bit. Wouldn't need to be attached.
  11. if it's 2x1x1 should be ok, had mine on a pine shelving unit for a while. Will weight 50-70kg depending on rocks etc.
  12. Up here i go out to stone and water world, it works out about $1 a kg. about $20 for a 20kg bag, you don't need to buy the small bags from a fish shop. all it is is rocks so anywhere that supplies bulk pebbles etc is fine. just remember to rinse thoughly. I asked the guy at my LFS and he suggested going to stone and water world, it is where he brought bulk from then split it up. It's a good way to go if you want bulk. also can use daltons aquatic mix, good for plants, is $9ish for 10kg bag.
  13. Depending on how good you were with a hacksaw or jigsaw and a rivet gun you could quite easierly convert a commerical box into 400mm and still have 4 tubes maybe even 5.
  14. This is what i used; http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... d=76225345 Sorry the picture is gone, They are the fittings out of offices, brought two, combined them and now have a 6 tube fitting. @36w each thats 216w all up. Great if you have a 4ftx2ft top to your tank. So all up to get 6 tubes on my tank I paid: 2x commerical fittings off trademe =$30 Some mains wiring and a plug ~$5 6x 6500K osram bulbs (mitre 10 mega) @ $4.50 ea = $27 (amazing pricing) :bounce: :bounce: All up = $62 8) Works brillantly, only running 5 bulbs, may take a bulb or two out as I'm having a bit of a algae bloom.
  15. Port Wiakato is not really in the auckland area, fair bit of a drive from the shore. Was thinking some of the west coast beaches just not sure which one.
  16. Does any one have any suggestions where is best to collect driftwood around the aucklnad area? Any good beaches or lakes? Need a pretty big piece.
  17. If your looking for the cannister filter, tough tanks in henderson might stock them, tend to be a bit cheaper than alot of pet stores. They have got alot of filters etc. pretty sure they're in the book.
  18. Awesome. Thank you TM and suphew
  19. The overflow out of my tank goes straight through the bottom of the tank, I'm just curious what people do in terms of supporting the based of the tank around where the pip comes through. My plan was to cut a hole the size of the hansen fitting in the polystyrene and the stand. Is this ok?
  20. So have just finished construction of the tank stand, here are some pictures; If this is taking forever, i.e your on dial-up, they can all be viewed here. The stand is build out of 4x2, nice and strong 2 of these, one for the top, one for the base; Supported by four corner posts; Added an extra support at the back, can never be too safe Made the top self out of mdf, undercoated with the nastyest paint we had :lol: The stand is covered in black calco, easierly chaged and doesn't add to much weight. Plus is cheap and looks good; The top was spray painted black, don't use $3.95 spray, gave a really bad finish but doesn't matter as it will be covered by the tank. So the finished product (still have to put board in the bottom to put the sump on) ;
  21. 6500k fluorescent tubes are generally regarded as the best for plant growth.
  22. Jansens tends to be like 50% fish and pupuke on the shore is 100% fish, jansens is almost as good as hollywood.
