  1. Setup sounds great I have blue rams, angels, pearl gouramis in my 500L tank, don't really have any problems, or with the neons and angels. Good Luck
  2. daltons aquatic mix would be better. a layer of that then gravel over the top of that. it's about $10 a bag
  3.    Long week
  4. I saw thison trade me, I was just wonder what people thought of the setup? Would it be ok in it's current state, perhaps with some additional circulation to setup up with some fish and soft corals. As a side question, with the exception of the all mighty Deltec what are some other reliable brands of skimmer?
  5. to calculate litres 1220*450*450= 247050000 divide by 100000 therefore 247L As for power bill, wouldn't be massive. Maybe $20 a month
  6. I paid a little over $200 for a 1200x700x600 but that was made by a tank maker up here for lots less than other quotes. I would have said $200ish but would depend considering your down south and all.
  7. Ammo-lock adds an additional setup to the nitrification cycle. The only step easily achieved by a chemical reaction. It's a good product for what it does however is a little hard to prove. as tests will not indicate the change.
  8. Find the cause, not just a solution. I have used it in desperation, I think it helped but money down the toilet if you don't find and solve the problem. Water changes are always a cheap way to fix an ammonia problem especially during cycling
  9. don't think it would contain any ammonia but there could potentially be all sorts of things in your hot water cylinder and the pipes are copper rather than plastic. However copper is relatively inert so unlikely to leach much.
  10. changing 15% shouldn't change it too much. wouldn't be any more than rain in the wild I would have thought
  11. I just brought a hoplo and a choc talking fish tonight. From what I've heard they're both pretty cool. I wouldn't say hoplos would be very good at defending themselves though, seem pretty friendly to me
  12. I've got two BN i there. However the seem to sick to the other side of the tank.
  13. mine bury themselves under large rocks, making their own caves. So all i see is a whole lot of protective behaviour and then fry. No eggs and unfortunitely no sight of laying.
  14. I've just had my kirb pair breed for the second time in my tank. From the first lot of about 12 to start with 2 have survived. Will leave these ones in there for a couples of weeks and see how they go. If I have no luck keeping them alive with all the other fish in there I'll move the parents to a 2ft tank and let them breed. Try to get atleast one lot to survive. Got quite a few this time, I'm not too good with numbers but maybe 60ish Have a look at the video here. It's pretty poor quality at the begining but some bits show them ok. Photos were pretty hard due to dirty tank, size and being the same colour as the gravel
  15. what about making a fibre glass tank? wouldn't be too hard, just hand lay up. not too sure about costs.
  16. I've got some ambulia your more than welcome to come pick up. It's grown to over 700mm tall in my tank (has reached the surface). I'll give some of it to you for nothing if you want to come and pic up. PM me.
  17. will give a quick update shortly for anyone that cares. green algae went, now have a little black beard but mostly under control. Have got a few snails now. wondering if my setup would take a few clown loaches. Are there any other good snail eaters apart from puffers?
  18. can we get a range of zoos like that here?
  19. Is it getting too hot or too cold? and how quickly, in 400L it should take a while to change temp. try having a thermometer just outsude the tank and see if the temp varies the same in the room, if so your heater is not keeping the tank warmer than the room and you may need to just turn it up. or if it's getting to hot, ie the room is getting warmer thn you would like, either fork out for a chiler or a few frozen coke bottles of water in the top during peak heat will work,(sort of in 400L) If however the fluctuations are hotter than the surrounding room, then your heater may be getting stuck. Could your thermometer be broken?
  20. I have always been of the understanding the most important thing for aquariums is that it does not contain mould killer, as some coloured silicones and grouts do to prevent discolouration. Acid cure I believe is the thing to look for. Rinsing silicone is unlikely to do much as if anything is to be leach it will continue until the silcone is degraded. I've always used fosroc RTV, it claims on the back to be ok for aquarium use and is only $14 for a caulking gun tube, have used it alot on my tanks never had a problem.
  21. or just type "10 us gallons to litres" in google and it will convert it
  22. i have about 10 as i remeber, all going strong, various sizes and sexs. same other fish as you pretty much
  23. all depends on how many plants you want. If you just want a few plants may be ok, but I'd go for a couple more. By one light do you mean two tubes? If so you may get away with it, you won't get an amazing planted tank but the plants won't all die off.
